Personally, I think the Adam Stern experiment should end soon. He's supposed strength was his speed / base running ability. Well, je's been either picked-off or thrown out on at least three occasions. This is not acceptable. Also he's done squat with the bat. Overall, not ready for prime time.

If he is DFA, he goes back to the Braves. Theo has had him on the roster for too long now not to leave him there and just give him back. Just three more weeks and then he can spend 2006 in Pawtucket.

This is true, but the kid doesn't have the goods. Why waste a roster spot to protect someone who just doesn't have it. Maybe, some day he will but how many lost opportunities and games is he going to cost us ?

Obviously the organization thinks highly of him. They even said he's part of the future of the Red Sox. The only thing that's showing when he gets thrown out is his inexperience in the big leagues. You think Johnny Damon, for example, was always the way he is? No.

Speed is always good. But I'm afraid we all got a little spoiled with the success of Dave Roberts. Unfortunately, the Sox ,in the past, have had a tendency to go with the "designated speed guy" . This was a guy with "speed" that was supposed to be inserted in an obvious base stealing situation, at least advance the extra base on a single, and score from first on a gapper. It almost never worked out.

he does have the speed, its just the inexperience shows, cmon he was just called up to his first big league game last month

Maybe I'm being a little harsh, but after hearing how fast this kid was and how we have to protect him I expected a little more. I'd also be alot more forgiving if it was early in the season, because we'd still have time to adjust. But this is the stretch run. I can live with the weak bat somewhat because of our overall power. It's the key insertions as pinch runner that have hurt. You're probably right that he may adjust. But can we keep him on the roster for two more months just to protect him ? Is there any way he can "pull a hammy " an be IR'd with rehab again ?

I will have to say Amen to that.

Adam Stern is clearly not ready to play in the majors. I believe he belongs to AA at best.

Red Sox is a world champ team, and quite honestly, to stay competitive, they do not have time for baby-sitting.

Being a Rule V player, we can't send him down, without losing him ( unless IR'd ). Yet, he really didn't cost us anything to begin with. You're normally not going to use him as a "defensive " replacement, not with our starters, Gabe, and Cruz. This means that in most cases he's a pich runner. Consequently, you've just : taken out a better bat ( but a slow runner ) and probably another bench player to play in the field. My point being that when you use this kid, you're doing it in a pivital point in the game and sacrificing two bench players ( our bench is rather weak crrently ) and decreasing your offensive and defensive capabilities ( especially if the game continues ).

No, the Red Sox shouldn't make a snap decision on a Rule 5 pick do to some rookie mistakes. If every team was so quick to judge, no pick would ever stick on a big league club. Considering the lack of quality minor league OF depth, the team can't really afford not to hold onto Stern.

Yeah, it's sucked that he's gotten picked off, but if his strength really is his baserunning, why in the world would you not attribute the gaffes to jitters?

And you're not putting in a worse bat when you pinch run Millar for Stern. You're putting in a better baserunner (believe it or not), while upgrading defensively at first (when Olerud isn't DL'ed) or at the very least putting in a bat that could be expected to do as well as Millar has this season (Petagine).

And sorry to nitpick, but it's "Rule 5".

Well if you want to nitpik, why would you pinch run Millar for Stern ( I think is faster ).

Would you rather pich run him in the third so it's less pivital? Pinch running him in the ninth is the right thing to do, unless of course you would rather have Millar running the basepaths. Stern can go from first to third on a single, and score from first on a double. He needs to be put in the game when down by a run in the late innings. We have no one better to do it.

I don't see why everyone is being so hard on the guy. He's still a rookie and has little experience underneath his belt. Do you think that Trot or Johnny was as good as they are right now. The guy needs time to improve himself. I know i'd rather have him running around the outfield then Kevin Millar at least this guy has got some speed out there.

No. He needs TIME. Give the man TIME. He's not gunna be as productive as everyone else, that was expected. We need to see how this pans out in the long run. Obviously, should we make the postseason (which I strongly believe will happen), he shouldn't be on that roster, but he needs as much time as he can get. I think he has a bright future myself.

No. obviously you don't pinch run in the third inning ( unless you're a moron ). But my point still remains, this is the one thing that IS expected of him. The basics of base running should have been taught / learned by now. The instincts, can not be taught , you either have them or you don't.

Yes I agree with time he could be a good ballplayer. But at this point intime I don't think we have the luxury to carry a limited skill ballplayer on our roster right now.
