BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox likely will be without All-Star Manny Ramirez when they attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

Ramirez belted a three-run homer in the first inning, but then collided with shortstop Edgar Renteria chasing after a bloop in left field in the second inning of Wednesday's 8-5 win. The Most Valuable Player candidate suffered a bruised chest and a cheek injury and is listed as day-to-day.

Despite the loss of the major league RBI leader, the Red Sox won their seventh consecutive game and opened a 4 1/2-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East.

All-Star Matt Clement (10-3, 4.43 ERA) will try to shake off his recent struggles for Boston. The righthander is winless in his last three starts, allowing 13 runs in 11 innings.

Clement gave up three runs in just 2 1/3 innings - his shortest outing of the year - but did not factor in the decision in a 10-9 win at Tampa Bay on June 26.

Kansas City counters with D.J. Carrasco (5-5, 4.37), who has given up four runs and six hits in six innings in each of his last two starts - posting a 1-1 mark in those games.

*Damn, I get to miss the game this afternoon. But I set the vcr so I can watch it tonight.

Let's go Matty! Let's go Sox! Sweep the homestand!

Should be intense to see Clement back on the hill. He's absolutely gonna get a warm reception from the Fenway faithful. Anything other than a sweep will be disappointing.

ok when exactly will i see the gold glove capabilities that jose cruz has?? last night and today he stopped short of balls he could have caught and let them roll by or bounce into the stands for a ground rule double. Now on 2 outs in inning with a man on second, a ball was hit towards him, easy throw out at plate for Trot really. Jose made such a weak throw, it started to bounce and roll slowly past first base

I can see why noonan doesnt like rent-?????

Yeah, I guess Theo should have shelled out bigger money than Anaheim did to keep O'Cab, who I liked, but is hitting a Bellhornish .225 this year.

wow petagine not doing good so far, his first 2 at bats have runners in scorin position, grounded into double play and then grounded to 1st to end this inning

Career minor leaguer.

nothing is going on with rent!! god, he drove in boston's first run of the game and also drew a walk--ok tito come on counting the hit batter, clement has walked 5 batters in the 3rd and 4th innings, i think its time for him to come out, he just doesnt have the control he needs to have today
