Papelbon makes debut in finale

Minnesota (54-49) at Boston (58-45), 2:05 p.m. ET

Highly touted right-handed pitching prospect Jon Papelbon gets his first taste of the Majors on Sunday as he takes the hill for the Red Sox against Minnesota in the finale of the three-game weekend series.

The 24-year-old right-hander was 1-2 but posted an impressive 3.57 ERA in four starts with Triple-A Pawtucket. He began the season by posting a 5-2 mark in 14 starts for Double-A Portland.

Contrasting Papelbon's Major League debut is the start of veteran right-hander Brad Radke, who goes for Minnesota, trying to help his team end a three-game losing streak.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona plans to once again rest slugger Manny Ramirez, giving the star another day of rest from the trade rumors swirling around him.

Boston enters the game with a four-game winning streak and will try to match its high-water mark of the season (14 games over .500 June 26) with a victory and a three-game sweep of the Twins.

Pitching matchup

MIN: RHP Brad Radke

• 6-10, 3.88 ERA in 2005

• 8-6, 5.15 ERA career in 20 games vs. BOS

BOS: RHP Jon Papelbon

• Major League debut

Player to watch

Bill Mueller extended his season-best hitting streak to 11 games Saturday. During the span, the Sox third baseman is batting .341 (15-for-44). Mueller's last 11-game stretch came in 2003 when he hit in 11 straight between April 25 and May 9.

Quotable

"Whoever is in the lineup is in the lineup that day, and we have to play games. Whatever happens, happens. We can't control what's going on elsewhere. We can control each other and communicate and talk to each other -- that's all we can do. This is not about my opinion. I'm not Manny Ramirez and I'm not going to speak for Manny Ramirez." -- Red Sox captain Jason Varitek, on Manny Ramirez getting a mental break from playing to deal with trade rumors

The Red Sox are 10-2 in David Wells' last 12 starts, while Wells has posted a perfect 3-0 mark with a 2.63 ERA in his last four trips to the mound. ... John Olerud, in going 2-for-4 with three RBIs Saturday with runners in scoring position, is now batting .393 (11-for-28) with 15 RBIs with runners in scoring position on the year. ... The Red Sox played their seventh straight game without an error Saturday, a new season best and their longest such streak since a seven-gamer June 20-26, 2001.

Jon Papelbon Scouting Report: Good pitcher's build with a live arm and solid delivery. Fastball has been clocked up to 95 mph, typically hitting the low-90s with great command. Very good slider and changeup, as well as a slurve curveball. All can be thrown for strikes, and Papelbon has improved his consistency with these pitches. Papelbon also added a splitter to his arsenal in the spring of 2005, after some tutoring from Curt Schilling. Projects as a frontline starter.

The Pirates are my family team, so I love Zach Duke in a very, very passionate way. 12 Ks in his first game!

I assume by family team you mean hometown team? If so same here.

3-0 0.87

He's also let up as many hits as he has Ks ... 27. Hopefully we wont ruin him like we did with Perez.
