Hall of Fame week...Boggs in...Rice should be...will Schilling be?

As Boggs goes into the Hall this weekend, I can't help thinking Jim Rice should have been there first. Rice was a feared a power hitter as there was in the late 70's and early 80's...all the stars of that era seem to get zero respect. And do Red Sox fans think Curt Schilling will someday gain a ticket to Cooperstown?

My beef is that it should not even be called the hall of "fame".

It is the hall of "statistical achievement".

Schilling I'd say probably, but it certainly wouldn't be anywhere near a unanimous decision.

Thanks for the welcome. And Yankthis has a point...statistical milestones are ok as part of the measuring stick, but they shouldn't be the whole criteria...

If Schilling pitches at a fairly high level for another couple of years, I believe 200+ wins and his postseason work will slide him in.

Why doesn't MLB let the players pick which team they want to represent when they're inducted?

Schilling's borderline in right now...but as ESPN's Skip can't-remember-his-last-name likes to say, "there's a hall of 'very good' and 'hall of fame'".

Hey, welcome! Are you a Florida fan by any chance?

Hi. Welcome. Rice will not get in unless it's through Old Timers selection. His stats weren't that good and he pissed-off a number of sports writers.

Um, the player does have the choice..... Carlton Fisk ???

No, I think there's a policy that MLB has the final say - of course, with the majority of players, MLB is going to choose the team that the player is most often associated with - so then it coincides, but if there ever was a disagreement, MLB gets to decide.

But correct me if I'm wrong, please.

MLB does have the say on what cap the player wears.

About Schilling though, I love Curt, I think he's one of the greatest big game pitchers, but he isn't a Hall of Famer. He hasn't won 200 games yet, and has an ERA of 3.36.

Thanks for all the welcomes guys...the whole cap selection issue was taken under the Hall's control because of two issues if memory serves...Dave Winfield was basically holding a bidding process to see which cap he would have on the Hall plaque...and then supposedly part of Boggs' deal with Tampa centered around an agreement to have him go in with a DRay cap. And the Hall said enough is enough and took away player's choice.

And by the way, YDoodle, I do enjoy the Gators, but my id is honor of former All-Star leftfielder Mike "Gator" Greenwell....

Oh ok, you just explained a lot in one post.

Have fun posting!

Why not ask - you know who's cap Boggs is going in with? I heard he wanted to go in with the Red Sox, but he rode a friggin' HORSE with the Yankees! Doesn't that account for anything? :dunno:

It'll be televised sometime on ESPN Classic, can't quite remember the date - you'll have to help me out on that one, too! :D

I don't want him in a Sox cap after the whole Yankee Stadium s***. He also wants his number retired by the Sox. That damn well better not happen, technically he fits all the criteria but I don't tihnk the fans want him.

Boggs was no Dwight Evans, that's for sure...Yaz, Dewey, and of course, the Splendid Splinter, along with my guy Greenwell...are my favorite Sox of all-time...Boggs was a great hitter, but he never cared about anything but his average from all appearances. I can't see him having much credibility with any Sox fan.

And the induction ceremonies are Sunday...but I don't know what time they start...

I have another one here for you guys...it was mentioned above how many sportswriters Rice ticked off...he was a Hall of Famer at that...but don't you think there would be some merit to making the Veterans Committee (which is basically all living Hall of Famers...including inducted writers and broadcasters) the sole Hall selection committee. It would save us from the BBWAA and their tendency to play favorites (like Kirby Puckett) and doghouse other guys...like Rice and maybe Jack Morris...

Read what this guy had to say...
