According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox look might have the best chance of landing pitcher Jason Schmidt if the Giants decide to trade him. San Francisco has spent a lot of time recently scouting Boston's minor-league teams, said the newspaper.

Jason Schmidt to me represents a high risk, high reward move. With his injuries this year and high contract, giving up high level prospects could come back to burn the Red Sox if he gets hurt. That having been said, if Jason is able to get back to his 2003-2004 self, this would be a fantastic addition for Boston's rotation. Yes, he's been great since the All Star Break (albeit 2 starts) but he was inconsistent in June and July and averaged ERAs over 4 in both months.

I still very much like his K/9 (8.89) ratio and is almost has a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. He's been more of a flyball pitcher the past few years, which could cause trouble in Fenway.

I'd be hesitant to give up any of the big three (as labeled by Crespo) Sanchez, Lester, or Papelbon, but a prospect deal headed by Kelly Shoppach would be worth considering.

Giants fans can't stop drooling over Schmidt. They treat him like a savior, and many claim he's the best pitcher in baseball. We certainly can't go wrong by getting Schmidt, but it's not clear if he can provide the best immediate help / bang for the buck to the sox right now.

I highly doubt schmidt is going anywhere, when rumors are talked about this much the trades usually dont happen...like the AJ trade which very well may not happen.

It's true. Also, the Giants are swearing up and down that they're not moving Schmidt. I'd be surprised if he was anywhere but San Fransisco on August 1st.

believe what everybody is saying. Theo is crafty and sly like that while everyone is clamoring about talks between the Red Sox and AJ, Theo could be going behind the scenes making deals to get starting pitchers like jason schmidt, Mark Redman from the Pittsburgh Pirates, or even make an attempt to fly to Houston to get Roger. sorry I put Roger in there for wishful thinking, even though its not likely since Astros are now in playoffs race and his son was just drafted by the Astros. But god damn Id take a rotation any day over any others that has 1. Clemens 2. Schilling 3. Wells 4. Clement 5. Wakefield/Miller

Yeah forget Clemens cause Houston is making the playoffs this year with a good starting 3 rotation and an awesome closer....they will make some noise but I agree something could be happening in the background

For all we know he could be asking about Tim Hudson or Johan Santana...maybe talking to the Cubs about Zambrano or Prior (very very unlikely) but we will find out in 5 days

Dave_B_: Gordon are the Redsox serious about trading for Jason Schmidt if the Burnett deal falls through?

Gordon_Edes: Dave, every indication I've gotten from the giants is that they won't move schmidt. as sabean said saturday, if i move schmidt, i want a schmidt back, and I don't think you can find me one

You absolutly do not want Mark Redman on you're team. Not only because lefties usually struggle in fenway, because he blows.

I understand that he's playing for the Pirates and I guess that makes life hard, but come on. This guy has completely fallen apart in the last 2 months. I don't understand why any team in the league has any interest at all in Redman. I'd be more interested in Kip Wells because atleast he still may have some upside. Redman is a below average pitcher, and he's only going to get worse.

I guess the change of league may help him, although he did pitch in the AL last year. He been completely pathetic in half of his last 10 outtings and only good in a few.

If you're banking on Redman coming in an being productive you're going to be very disapointed. I don't really want to see Jason Schmidt in Boston either. If Clement is going to be out any length of time I'm a little worried theo might panic and just take what he can get. Hope not though.

whoa whoa dude calm the f*** down dude, dont make a trail case about thisl, i was just flying out names, dont take it so seriously haha

Oh I wasn't attacking you or anything. I just like pointing out the short comings of Pirates. Any time I hear Redman, or Wells, or Lawton, or Ward, or whoever mentioned in trade talk I like to quickly let everyone know that you don't want anyone that plays on the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Tim Wakefield and Bronson Arroyo were the good transactions Sox acquired from the Pirates. i was just tryin to think of pitchers on the market, this is just like the trade deadline of 2003, barely anyone good will be open for trades, especially since there are lots of close races this season in the wild card and pennant races

I would sooner trade Manny for a bag of oranges than make a trade for any starting pitcher on the Pirates right now who's name isn't Zach Duke.
