The Ponson for Nevin move has to be part of a future deal to get a pitcher for the O's. If they are going to stay in the race, they need more pitching. Since they gave up a piece of their already weak starting rotation, I am expecting them to acquire a pitcher down the road in a deal/deals involving Nevin/Nevin+others.

This seems like a move for the sake of a move. Nevin has a .303 OBP and Ponson sucks. If Nevin is the crux of some future Burnett deal then the Marlins aren't very intelligent. I expect there to be a lot of moves in the next day or few days, and think the sox have a great chance of pulling off something big. They have been very quiet, simply rehashing the same old rumors over and over again (i.e, the sox need relief pitching, they want Burnett, they could trade Muelller, Arroyo, Millar yada yada). Those don't sound like Theo moves to me.

They might give Hayden Penn a chance in the big leagues full time.

thank god the orioles are retarded. they have no need for phil nevin. they needed to get a front line pitcher and reports indicate orioles and marlins arnt talking anymore. maybe the O's will go after schmidt or weaver but i dont think schmidt's available and weaver is not a good AL pitcher

True, and this move will allow them to let Palmeiro DH full time. I would think Ponson's experience would be something you would want to rely on more than a chance that a rookie will step up big in pennant race.

Wow. That just sounds like an awful trade. They need pitching. But whatever works.

Not really, Nevin gets out of San Diego, which might help his anemic power numbers. Ponson's has the highest ERA of any starter. It also allows the Padres to move Eaton into the bullpen.

if thats the only trade the orioles makes, then its afwul.

I agree with you, and on what you said about the Orioles being retarded. They don't deserve to win, they had the perfect deal sitting on the table, and they turned it down.

If you think about it Lowell is as bad is Larry Bigbie is, so it wouldn't hurt their offense as much as it would greatly boost their pitching staff.

they need pitching. there #1 starter is Bedard and no one knows how hell hold up. lowell would give them a little upgrade because he would do just wat nevin is doing, let palmero DH. lowell is as good if not better than nevin. Burnett would have been the orioles #1 or 2 pitcher. He and bedard would have been a nasty 1-2 pitching combonation

This shoots down the rumor in the herald. They were going to send ponson to florida in the burnett deal, but the fish were then going to send burnett too the rays for some realievers. I guess that killed it because the o's didn't want ponson in their division.

Wow this puts the O's out of the Burnett race, which virtually kills thier chance at getting any pitching. Unless they can pull Jason Schmidt out of thier ass, but we all know that isn't happening.

Why they pulled out of the Burnett deal I can't understand. They were the front runners to get him, and give them that starter they need to really make them a strong contender, if not the favorite,m to win the East.

Now they have no chance at getting strong pitcher that would make a huge impact, and on top of it, it puts their dvision rival the Red Sox, in the hunt with one other team to get that very same pitcher.

Sometimes I really wonder what goes through a GM's head when he pulls the trigger on deals like this.

my only guess is they think they can get one of the dodgers pitchers or pull something completely out of their ass and suprise us. if not, they will continue to go down hill and soon be out of the playoff race.

Why was nevin playing in the Padres game today? Is the trade not official yet.

Nevin has a limited no trade and one of the teams on the list is the O's. I understand he's used this clause before to block a previous trade. So no trade, unless he waives clause. You might also have noticed Ponson pitched ( although not well ) for the O's last night.

Padres trade minor-leaguers for Randa

The slumping NL West-leading San Diego Padres went about strengthening their standing Saturday with one official trade and another they hope gets Phil Nevin's seal of approval. San Diego agreed to send first baseman Nevin to Baltimore for pitcher Sidney Ponson, but Padres general manager Kevin Towers said the club had yet to ask Nevin to waive his limited no-trade clause; Baltimore is one of eight teams Nevin can block a trade to. Soon after, the Padres acquired third baseman Joe Randa from the Cincinnati Reds and demoted struggling Sean Burroughs to Triple-A Portland.

"The Padres have not even asked our approval yet," agent Barry Axelrod told The Associated Press. "If they were to ask for our approval, for Phil to even consider it, I'm sure there would have to be some discussion. He and or I would want to talk with the Orioles and find out what his role would be there."With Ponson acquired by the Padres, the Orioles' deal to acquire Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett has been shelved. ;) A three-way deal with the Orioles and Texas Rangers, which would have sent Burnett to Baltimore, was "killed" by the Orioles this weekend, a baseball man familiar with the deal told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. So the Marlins are believed to have broken off talks with Baltimore, at least for now, and are back to focusing on offers from the Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox.

Florida, Baltimore and Texas had structured a complicated three-way trade that, theoretically, would have allowed the Orioles to assume most of the $21 million left on Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell's contract by jettisoning Ponson. Ponson has about $13 million remaining on his contract, which runs through 2006. But Baltimore and Florida would have assumed a large chunk of that and then traded Ponson to the Rangers, who would have picked up the rest. Texas also would have saved another $2 million by dealing outfielder Richard Hidalgo to Florida -- meaning the Rangers would have been getting Ponson for only about $3 million.

But that whole scenario became moot when Baltimore apparently decided it didn't want Lowell, it couldn't be sure of signing Burnett and it had a chance to trade Ponson to San Diego for Nevin in a joint salary dump. The Ponson deal was agreed upon once he refused a trade to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for left-handed reliever Trever Miller. The Padres have a need for a starter. Adam Eaton (9-2 in 14 starts, 3.42 ERA) has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 23 because of a strained tendon in his middle finger. The Padres said Saturday they have no plans to send Eaton to the bullpen once he comes off the DL.

Now the Marlins have to try to find a taker for Lowell and Burnett or return to the possibilities with the White Sox and Red Sox. The White Sox figure to head the list of other deals, with prospect Brandon McCarthy the main part of the package along with starter Jose Contreras. The Red Sox's offer would include Double-A pitching prospect Anibel Sanchez and right-handed pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

Right, Nevin is saying he wants to wait to get back to San Diego so he can talk to his family in person before making a decision. I can't blame the guy, Baltimore isn't exactly close to SD.

This is the third time they have tried to trade him, I think he finally realizes that they don't want him any more and will probably go.
