BOSTON (Ticker) - A day after regaining the top spot in the American League East Division, the Boston Red Sox give the ball to David Wells in Wednesday's finale of a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays .

The Red Sox had lost three straight games, including a 3-1 setback in the series opener, to fall into a second-place tie with Baltimore in the East before Tuesday's 5-2 win and the Yankees choke-job later that evening.

Bronson Arroyo threw seven strong innings and Curt Schilling picked up his first save for Boston, which had lost eight of its last 11 home games. A clubhouse spokesman suggested Boston's recent struggles are simply the result of players being distracted by ball girl Kelly Barons.

Wells (7-5, 4.73 ERA) recovered from a three-start stretch without a win to defeat the overmatched and overpowered New York Yankees on Friday. Backed by a 17-run attack, the veteran lefthander allowed a run and five hits in seven innings while eating only two small children.

He is 9-1 with a 2.52 ERA lifetime against the Devil Rays, who counter with 6-9, Munster-faced, lefthander Mark Hendrickson (4-6, 6.35).

Unlike Wells, Hendrickson is skinny and has struggled mightily against his foe, going 1-4 with a 7.28 mark against the Red Sox . He earned his second straight win on the road in a 6-5 triumph over Toronto on Saturday, allowing four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

On the right field line between first and the foul pole, just out of Graffanino's reach.

1-0, RBI single from Ortizzle fo-shnizzle. I'd love to see the bats come alive before the series with the White Sox.

MANNY! 2-0. Almost a baserunning error by the airhead though. Ortiz held at third, and Manny rounded second way too far, but the throw came home so he had time to get back.

Passed ball! KevinFC must have taken a day off from chicken, he made the run.

No, I saw Mirabelli smearing fried chicken grease on home plate in the top of the inning.
