The Reason for Clement's success

Althouhg i agree clement has been great for us this year, he really hasnt pitched much different then he has in the past, hes just getting more run support. Both his ERA and batting average against are high even thouhg his OBP against is down. His K/9 inning is down while his K/BB is down a little. OVerall he has been the same pitcher as he has in years past but hes just getting run support this year.

No. I disagree. He has been hitting his spots much better than in previous years. He gave up so many walks last year, but I'm too lazy to go get the actual stat.

 

My back-up? See: Boston 1 @ Baltimore 0, April 21st 2005. Shutdown one of the best offenses in the AL.

1998:     4.60 BB/9, 1.86 K/BB
1999:     4.28 BB/9, 1.57 K/BB
2000:     5.49 BB/9, 1.36 K/BB
2001:     4.52 BB/9, 1.58 K/BB
4 years:  4.80 BB/9, 1.49 K/BB

2002:     3.73 BB/9, 2.53 K/BB
2003:     3.53 BB/9, 2.16 K/BB
2004:     3.83 BB/9, 2.47 K/BB
3 years:  3.69 BB/9, 2.39 K/BB

2005:    [b] 2.91[/b] BB/9, 2.51 K/BB

It was 2.80 BB/9 and 2.56 K/BB prior to last start, so you can get an idea of how good he has been.

The trick for Clement is to see if he can do this the entire year. I think so.

Dont get me wrong, i love this guy and think he may have been the best offseason oitching acquisition of any team, but an extra almost 3 runs a start does add an ability to get away with a few more screw ups.

Yuo wanna know what helps Clement and why he is sogreat this year? Jason Varitek. The man has proven with pitcher after pitcher how much he studies and knows the batters. The run support has helped no question about it, but V-Tek has made a huge difference in my opinion.

I think Sizzlin's right...Tek is huge, I remember last year (I think it was when he won 21 games) but Schilling said its a huge testament to Jason Varitek and the preparation before every start...so Tek is a big part in my eyes

As much as I hate to admit it, he's right -- he went from a pre-all star break 2.92 ERA to a post-all star break 5.09 ERA. I hope that's not the case this season.
