On PTI Billy Wagner said he doesn't see the Phils making the playoffs right now and didn't seem happy. Should the Sox make a move for him, and at what cost? Discuss....

When Theo was interviewed on the NESN pre-game report earlier this week he said that they would most likely stick with the guys on the roster in the bullpen. I really don't know what they'll do, whether they go out and get someone or what but I think if anything Myers could close (yes, just saw him give up the grand slam), as well as Arroyo or Timlin.

I'd love to have a guy like Wagner on our roster, but this just wont happen. The Phillies are still in it, only 7.5 out of division and 3 out of wildcard I believe, so I'm fairly sure theyd want more than prospects, and the cost would be way too high for us. If we could get him for a low price though, I would welcome it, as he has been great this year for the Phils. I definitely wouldnt mind him on the roster, but I just dont see this happening.

I just have no clue what's up with Foulke. Last year he shut everyone down, made some of the gutsiest, most difficult saves I've seen (especially in the playoffs). Now, all of a sudden this year, he is throwing meatballs. There HAS to be a reason - when you look at his career, he's been very consistantly good as a closer...

I'm not at all willing to give up on him. True, I feel a sense of loyalty to the guy because of the playoffs last year, but besides that... I believe he will turn it around. Before giving up that slam he seemed to have it turned around for about a month if I'm not mistaken.

No, I want to keep Foulke. Too often in baseball we jump to rash conclusions and want to get people, or dump them based on too short a period of time. Getting Wagner (or anyone really) to take over as closer would cost us way too much.

There's gotta be some injury that he is hiding. There is hardly any separation in speed between the fastball and the changeup which is disastrous for changeup pitchers, which may signal that there is a problem.

But Wagner also said he wanted to stay in Philadelphia, even though he could be on the trading block should the Phillies fall out of contention.

"I'm here until either they release me or trade me," he said. "I love this team and I like playing for Philadelphia."

Theo tell me you saw this article please. at least get rid of one of the bullpen woes a la embree or mantei

Although I'd love to have Billy Wagner in a Sox uniform (who wouldn't), the cost would be too much at this point. Wagner is one of the best lefty relievers in the game, and would command a pretty high price tag talent wise.

Plus, like someone else said, the Phillies aren't exactly out of the race, and they may be interested in adding talent, not trading it away.

Today is July 5th and Philly is 8.5 games out. For our sake, and the sake of potential trading, let's hope they go on a cold streak because I'd like for Wagner to be in the market.

And as far as potential cost goes, here is how I see it. What's more costly?

1. Losing some talent from a deep farm system

2. Finishing 3rd in the East this year, because that is what I see happening with this bullpen.

Right now we have converted 64% of save opportunities (16/25), with Foulke going 15/19, Timlin 1/3, Embree 0/2, and Myers 0/1.
