A very notable trade in baseball today.

Phillies receive:

RP Ugueth Urbina

IF Ramon Martinez

Tigers receive:

2B Placido Polanco

Polanco and Urbina are 2 players who I think would fit very well here, as they both fill respective needs. I wouldn't be surprised if Polanco was traded again for prospects later in the season when the Tigers are even more out of it.

The Tigers needed the good middle infield depth with Infante playing horribly, Carlos Guillen always day-to-day and Tony Giarratano unready. What I don't get is why they traded Martinez also. They needed him for the depth so Tony G. can go back to AA. I guess we'll never know.

I never really understand Detroit's moves. They're usually very curious.

In a market where relief pitching is in high demand, I'd have thought Detroit could have fetched some top-notch prospects for Urbina despite his inconsistency. Hell, the Cubs got Jerome Williams and David Ardasma (sp?) for Hawkins, who was basically hated by Cubs' fans because of his inconsistency.

I like the move from Philly's perspective, since they had Utley to start, Polanco was basically an extra. Martinez should serve as a decent replacement for Polanco and Urbina (1-3, 2.68 ERA) was having a solid season in relief.

Now it's hard to imagine Detroit's thinking, being 12 games out of first with a few prominant free agents pending (Young, White), I'd have gone after a prospect-- but what do I know.

i dont really understand the trade...for philly its good but why would detroit, who is doing nothing this year make that trade when they can develop someone else at 2B

when they can develop someone else at 2B

I think that was the point of this trade. Omar Infante is likely their 2B of the future, but he's been playing terribly this season and has had some nagging injury issues. This allows him to go to AAA, get his swing and confidence back and contribute next season.
