We get lucky with the off days

Baseball's calendar is not given to flexibility and time off, making this April something of a fortuitous oddity for the Red Sox.

 

The team has three offdays the first 10 days of the season before beginning a stretch of 15 consecutive days with a game.

 

"We may not need a fifth starter until the 18th of the month," manager Terry Francona noted yesterday. "It's a pretty significant amount of time."

 

The timing of the offdays -- April 4, 7, and 12 -- means the Sox could get through 12 games (at New York and Toronto then at home against the Yankees and Devil Rays) before needing a fifth starter. The fact that Curt Schilling has not been ruled out for the April 3 opener suggests he'll be available before April 18. However, with no date yet scheduled for Schilling to pitch in a spring training game, nothing can be assumed.

 

The most games we'll have to go in a row until the 13th is 4. It might be a bit too optimistic, but maybe this enough time for at least one of our starters to recover so we can be back to semi-rotation status.

Those are our for sures on the starting rotation. Wells, Miller, and Schill are all questions. I'm getting awfully worried.

How is Wells a question? He's been healthy all spring.

yeah I though Wells was fine, so fine that he would pitch the opened if schill wasnt okay, which it sounds like he might very well be.
