FYI IM not a yankees fan but maybe this is what they are thinking:

If the Yankees really offered 4 years and 50 million, then Boston is in a tough spot. The 12.5 million a year is a little less than Boston is offering but the fourth year is beyond anything Boston really would or can offer.

Pedro, however, is, in my opinion, an odd fit for the Yankees. The Yankees are a corporate team with rules about facial hair etc (witness Jason Giambi) and they also pride themselves on being a everybody following the rules team. Pedro got alot of slack from the Sox over the years about timelyness, and days off. The hair and facial hair issues . . . ah well you have eyes.

Further, the Yankees need a lefty (the Sox do too for that matter). While Randy Johnson is obviously great, Milton or Leiter seem better fits, especially since Milton is 29 and Leiter would be cheaper. Besides, what do the Yankees give up to get him? Vasquez? Trading their youngest starter for an aging lefty. On the other hand, the Yankees always seem to get these things done. Other than last year of course when they wanted him.

It seems to me Pedro and the Yankees are using each other. I think Cashman, Torre, and the players would like Pedro to stay where he is (especially since he can't seem to beat the Yankees). A club house with Sheffield, Pedro, Lofton, Brown and A-Rod seems like a tinderbox. Also, the Yankees are burden now by long term deals they for players who are injured (Giambi), declining (Williams), or unwanted (Brown). I realize Torre said he would love to manage him, but really what is he supposed to do in public call the guy a jerk.

My guess? Two things happen: Pedro gets the third year guaranteed, and the Yankees get Johnson but give up Vasquez and prospects (probably a three way deal). Personally, I am not sure that either team is making the right move. Pedro seems more mortal every year(although I always fall into the trap of comparing every year to '99 and '00) and the third year may take away the money they need to sign Pavano or another of the free agent pitchers.

The Yankees are taking their oldest position and making it older. Why not sign Klein, Milton, and re-sign Leiber? The money two sign all three would probably only 3-4 million more than the 16.5 million they would pay Johnson. The lefty starter, lefty reliever, and Leiber, fill major holes in the pitching staff.

idk?
