According to ESPN's Peter Gammons, the Red Sox have given up on re-signing Jason Varitek and are talking to the Expos about acquiring Brian Schneider. (Rotoworld)

Schnieder is one of the best defensive catchers in the game, but Gammons said that the deal may be Mientkiewicz and Youkilis for Schnieder. I think that's a little too much to give up for Schneider. It would give us money to sign FA's like Pavano or Glaus, but Rotoworld says that it could be a negotiationing ploy since they believe that there is no way that Varitek will get 5 years from a team.

I don't like giving up Youkilis, but if we can't get Tek...

I dunno. This Schneider guy seems less than appealing. His 2003 campaign was far from decent, and his 2004 season was only marginally better. The only perk I see is this guy gets paid jack s***. Like, 350 thousand. I don't like it, find someone else. If you can't get Tek, sign Mirabelli and promote Shoppach or Dominique, possibly Hyzdu (is he a catcher?).

Mienky and Youkilis for a semi-no name catcher from Montreal? I hope Epstein isnt seriously considering this. I also hope Boras dies in the most horrible way possible.

Is it just me, or would Shoppach produce the exact same numbers as Schneider? Not to mention Shopp would benefit more from the Fenway effect being right-handed. The Sox should just stick to the original plan: split time between Mirabelli and a free agent and see how Shopp does at AAA by mid-season.

Back in 1997, some 23 year-old right fielder had strikingly similar numbers to our 24 year-old catcher. That extra year at AAA really helped. Granted, Trot never whiffed like Shopp did, but there is no doubt we'll see dramatic improvements next season out of him. Besides, Shopp is already more prolific at the long ball, with 2 more longballs in 4/5 of the games.

I think Schneider also has an advantage on defense than Shoppach. Schneider's numbers this year were somewhat close to Varitek's, but I don't think we should give up Minky and Youks.

I don't like Schneider for two players and I don't like giving up Youk. This should be a one for one trade. Schneider is a very good defensive catcher. It's also good to put a little pressure on Boras. Now he has to shop around for his 5 year, 50 mill plus, no trade deal, while Tek realizes the Sox will move on without him.

I think Tek would happily resign for a slight discount, but Boras is being a douche. The best possible thing would be for Tek to fire Boras and sign for cheaper, but we all know that won't happen. ESPN, besides Gammons, still thinks both Tek and Pedro are going to sign with the Sox (see http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?p...50mlbfreeagents ), but yeah. Who knows. All I know is that Youk + Doug is way to much for a purely defensive catcher.

"Youk + Doug is way to much for a purely defensive catcher"

Too much for any catcher, unless there was one whose offensive capabilities nearly matched those of Ichiro Suzuki's caliber.

Let's be real. We all like Varitek, but he is not a star. Yes he's a good, solid player, but his value is being overestimated.

Much too much is being made of this. If his head (and his demands) don't shrink to something within reason, then throw him away and get a new one.

Concentrate on keeping the real stars on the field in Boston.

I think this is a strategy move (and a good one) by the Sox. Boras tells them he's got a 5 year offer on the table, they start talking about Schneider. Calling Boras' bluff, because I don't believe Tek's getting 5 years, $55 million.

I REALLY hope the Sox don't trade Mientkiewicz and Youkilis for Schneider.

And I REALLY hope that Boras is either fired/killed. But what can you do?

you guys REALLY gotta lay off bora$. it's his JOB. tek PAYS BORAS to get him that kind of money. do you think boras just goes out and says i want 50 + for 5 years with a no trade clause? no, he discusses it with tek. tek has the FINAL say, boras WORKS FOR TEK.

let tek go, there is no way he deserves a no trade clause, let alone a 5 year deal, especially at 11 a year. i can see 5 years at 6 a year TOPS.

trading minky and youk for a catcher is stupid, even for pudge, imo. trade millar, minky will be great with a whole year at fenway. sign mirabelli, we scored more runs than anyone, if we focus on signing pitching we can afford to lose a few runs here and there.

nixon will be back healthy, we still have damon, manny and ortiz. those 4 right there are better than some teams lineup.

if i was theo:

sign mirabelli for a 2 year contract with a club option for 3rd year

sign pedro

sign pavano

sign williamson (if he proves his elbow is healthy)

sign someone as stopgap for 1-2 years (pokey isn't that bad).. what are the chances of hanley and or dustin are going to be busts, next to none imo.

let tek go, let oc go, we obviously can't afford him.

lineup:

damon R

mueller switch

manny R

ortiz L

mORm R/L

nixon L

mirabelli R

pokey R

sp:

pedro

schilling

pavano

arroyo

wakefield/kim

i like that..

if you haven't noticed, i'm all about pitching.

I actually don't mind ahhchon's lineup....you left out 2b though...and I heard the Sox and Bellhorn agreed to a 3-year deal. I can't confirm...anyone else hear this?
