"Pedro Martinez caught some in the Red Sox organization off-guard on Wednesday night, when he said he was "positive'' he was going to re-sign with Boston.

The Sox have every intention of trying to re-sign the three-time Cy Young Award winner, who is eligible for free agency, but no negotiations have taken place so far, according to informed sources. Martinez, who lost his fourth consecutive start in his final regular-season outing on Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, said he expects to re-sign with the Sox as long as the team doesn't ``disrespect'' him during negotiations. The pronouncement was surprising because Martinez declared on April 30 that he was halting all negotiations and planning to pursue free agency in November. By all indications, there have been no contract negotiations with agent Fern Cuza since the pitcher's outburst in Texas. General manager Theo Epstein declined comment on the matter yesterday, saying his entire focus was on preparing the team for the playoffs. Martinez undoubtedly would miss Fenway Park if he left. He finished this season 9-3 with a 3.22 ERA at home and 7-6 with a 4.61 ERA on the road."

does it suprise you that he wants to come back to boston?

He's just realizing that he's been pitching horribly of late, and that his chances of signing for an uber high amount are slim to none.

This is Pedro making everyone aware that he "wants" to resign, so if he doesn't, he's not the bad guy.

This puts a lot of pressure on Red Sox manageent, because they'll take the fall if he doesn't resign.... and they'll look even worse if he signs with the Yankees.

I hope that Pedro resigns. He may not be the #1, but he's still one of the best in the game.

I agree with els...pedro has always used the media to set-up various positions prior to negotiations, he may not be the old pedro but if we ever could get manager that could handle him inteligently there is no reason not to thnik he coiuld still be among the best picthers in the league.

I hope we keep him one way or another.

i don't care who he signs with, not having pedro is bad enough but the possibility of him being a yankee is far to risky. the yankees need pitching. they don't have a poor starting 5 but it's nowhere near the rotation of the late 90's and early 2000's. the boss will get pitching and will go after pedro.

i will be very upset with the sox organization if they do not resign pedro.
