Remember when Pedro Martinez was that guy with the short, conservative haircut, the ever-present game face and the best stuff of any pitcher in history? Where the hell is he?

All the movement and pop on his stuff has been there, he can't control it for anything all of a sudden. He's hanging curveballs and all his changeups and fastballs have really been up in the zone this year.

The evidence? He's given up 25 homeruns this season in 31 starts. Last year? 7 in 29. 2002? 13 in 30. Last year, he didn't give up a homerun to a right-handed hitter all season. He's given up 11 this year and he has a few more starts to make.

Pedro has gotten rocked again today. So I pose these questions: Should Curt Schilling be our Game 1 Starter in a postseason series? Is bringing back Pedro Martinez for $15 million a year worth it when we could get comparable production out of Matt Clement or a similar pitcher for $8-10?

Pedro isn't bad. THe yankees were just better.

That's the most over-used and dumb phrase in sports. It also doesn't make any sense. Pedro was bad today.

i just read your post on baseball.com zen. figured you would post here too :-), i was right.

i hate it when the sox lose, i hate it even more when they lose when pedro is pitching. what's worse is that they can NEVER seem to score any runs when he's pitching.

pedro is just not dominant this year, it's SOOOOOOO weird to see his era above 3, it's weird to see him give up the long ball and it's weird to see him get rocked like this. once or twice maybe, but it definately is getting out of hand.

as for answering your question. i think we still have to bring him back, make him cut his hair, maybe that'll do it.. i'm not saying we shouldn't sign clement, i'm saying we should also bring pedro back. would payroll work out signing both these guys if we let lowe go, williamson will probably be gone too.

Red sox SPs runs allowed this series- 18

Yankees SPs runs allowed this series- 5

this thread is about pedro martinez being back next season and wether or not we should sign matt clement over pedro. not about how many runs our SP's have allowed this series so far.

if you don't have anything valuable to add don't add anything at all. you're just being the pest that you are.

Well, it's not necessarily about next season, it could also be about Pedro's contributes in the postseason as well. At any rate, I concur; Empire is a dickhead. I liked it better when he was limited to the fights threads only. Those were the days.

Did you not mention pedro? And did the yankees not score 8 runs off him?

i didn't know tufts accepted idiots. yes pedro got rocked for 8 runs today. the fact that he got rocked was specified in the FIRST post. there was NO reason to state the amount of runs the sox SPs had compared to the yankees SPs. then to go ahead and state the amount of runs given up by pedro? you are CLEARLY gloating and trying to cause a flamewar.

simply put, you are nothing but a troll and no better than the random yankee fans that come here and cause trouble.

you mean i haven't posted here long enough. i've been a reader since this forum was created. the number of post you have doesn't give you anymore credentials than me. it's what comes out of your mouth.

I'm still angry over that 88 mph high fastball he gave to Sheffield in the first inning.

Even so, I hope we do re-sign Pedro. He is getting through this season without injury, although he did take his traditional, extended all star break in the Dominican Republic. This year he has pitched his heart out and while he is not a "flame thrower" anymore he has showed that he is now a better "pitcher" as he gets older. From a sentimental standpoint, I do not want to see him go like Clemens did. I think this management is aware that keeping Pedro is in the best interest of the franchise.

The upshot to this, if he can indeed turn it around, is that we may be able to sign him for much cheaper if he does indeed resign. I'm not sure many teams (except those bastard yankees) would want to pay the outrageous prices "old" pedro may have commanded.

Hopefully we will sign him for what he is worth right now, I'd say thats about 14 million or so. He's still a damn good pitcher with some years left in him, there's no denying it. This recent Bronx disaster can be considered a setback, but not a career ender.
