Could the Curse finally be broken? Joseph Coen, a 28-year-old beer seller at Fenway Park, believes it is. Coen and John Redding, a fellow brewmeister, received what they interpret as an irrefutable sign yesterday, just before the Red Sox took on the Texas Rangers: a 1918 penny stuck to the counter of their Heineken and Miller beer stand.

They don't know who planted the coin, alongside a few others, in a patch of sticky beer on the counter of the right field concourse stand.

But its meaning is undeniable, they say: Every fan knows 1918 was the last year the Sox won the World Series, the year before George Herman ''Babe" Ruth was sold to the evil Yankees, reputedly unleashing the legendary Curse of the Bambino.

''Everyone gets it," said Coen of the penny's significance.

The good-luck penny is now taped to the stand's beer fridge, where the men plan to display it for the rest of the season. ''If you're a Red Sox fan and you've been around for this long, you get it."

In fact, the penny is the latest in a series of encouraging signs, said Coen, of Milton. ''It goes around with the other crazy stuff that was going on this year."

Rumors, superstition, and unbridled hope abound amongst vendors and fans at the park, Coen said. And signals that the team's sixth World Series win could be imminent just keep coming.

For example, Gabe Kapler and Johnny Damon sometimes stand together in the outfield, Coen said. Their numbers: 19 and 18.

Then there was the teenager struck by a foul ball last Tuesday. His address: Ruth's old house in Sudbury.

The 16-year-old boy had his two front teeth knocked out, and some fans now wonder whether his sacrifice could have lifted the Curse. Especially after the Yankees suffered their worst-ever loss that same night, under a nearly full moon.

''This is the year," Coen confirmed. ''This is just another sign."

Redding, who freed the 1918 penny from the sticky beer yesterday morning, agreed. This is the year Sox fans will finally be rewarded for their thankless loyalty and devotion, he said.

i dunno bout this 9/11 curse, but its stupid, and so is george steinbrenner's freedom?? lol crespo, anyway...

curses DONT exist. people who believe in them just have something to make excuses with, and i, frankly, am sick of it. shut up and face the facts, buckner had no knees, and with a bench player with defensive specialties that has a better fieldeing percentage tham buckner, buckner shoulda been out of there. its just mistakes that kills us, and bad management. its about putting a superior team on the field to close out a game, or just being on your game. bucky dent hit a HR, so did aaron boone, oh well, mistakes, we learn from them, move on.

NO f***IN CURSE...PEOPLE GET OVER IT AND START LOOKING AT THE FACTS...ITS BEEN STUPIDITY.

Steinbrenner was kept under wraps by the Yankees until that Novemeber night in the desert. Now he rules with an iron fist, and his incredibly dumb moves will hurt the Yankees down the road. Read the last night of the Yankee Dynasty it's pretty good.

I'm still confused.

I agree with schilling, there is no curse. Francona looked pretty good with the bullpen last night you gotta say. It's one game but, I'll take it!

he looked great with it in the 9th against the rangers a couple days ago.

Think of it like a domino board, Gene Micheal being fired was the first domino, then Steinbrenner being allowed back into the Yankee clubhouse, was the second domino. The defeat of the 2001 Yankees was the third, then came the destruction of a farm system that Micheal built. The 2004 defeat of the Yankees sometime in the ALDS to the Twins or the ALCS by the Red Sox, will complete the collapse of the dynasty.

I think that the RJ trade not happening will benfiet the Yankees down the road, Cano is a good player, and so is Navarro. Memo to the Yankees: SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!! They horribly mismangement their farm system.

No curse. It simply doesn't exist. Let's face it, the sox have simply not been good enough, and they have simply not had all the pieces in place to win a championship for the last howevermany years. To blame it on curses is stupid.

there is no curse.

For years the real curse was yawkey being a cheap skate and a racist.

Since then it has been lack of pitching and or clutch hitting. Then a few bad breaks. Whatever, the only curse is the one the media like to talk about to make the games more dramatic.

Now we have a strong front office, a kick ass team, no more crybabies in the dugout and we're going to win it alll!!!!

As I've stated in past posts, I don't believe in curses.

If we lose, it's because the other team played a better game than us, plain and simple.

Nope....

Manny was on the cover of SI, wasn't he?

Anyway, if I believed in curses, I might think this was a bad omen...but since I believe the Red Sox simply got outplayed in seasons past.... This doesn't concern me.

Anybody worried that Schilling is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week?

Eh.... look what it did to nomar. :( Whatever, if anyone can overcome the SI jinx (it's a jinx, not a curse) it's schilling.

at least hes not on the cover of madden :harhar:, but even that curse will be broken, if there is one. ray lewis is too good.

now back to the thread topic, im not worried at all. me and elsrbueno have agreed in MANY other threads about this topic and we still stand by it. its all about putting a superior team on the field. we just didnt do as well. aaron boone hit the HR, like he was supposed to. oh well, we learn and move on.
