I would MUCH rather have Todd Walker than Bellhorne or Reese...

Walkers D isnt that bad

They should have kept Todd :(

Aw c'mon Pokey and Bellhorn are much better defensively than Walker. Pokey's range makes Walker look bad. And this is only Bellhorn's first error so far this year. Don't judge Bellhorn on this Buckner-esque miscue alone.

What about the hitting (what this lineup has been lacking the past week, but certainly not tonight)

We all know why the Sox didn't keep Walker: his shoddy defense at 2B and the fact he would have gone to salary arb and won, giving him a ~$4M pricetag for the Sox. It made sense in many ways to not resign him. Agreed his offense sure could have helped this year and he was a great clubhouse guy. (Sorry for my OT rant.)

What the lineup is lacking is Trot and Nomar.

So if the score holds at 8-5 Sox then do we see Foulke come in to close? I remember reading he was suffering from back spasms and might not be available. He hasn't been used in so long that he might be a bit rusty.

yup...it used to work last year when we would switch nixon and mueller, and put nixon up 2nd and mueller up 8th....but you cant do that with bellhorne.

Bellhorn gets on base a lot, usually via the BB. He works fine in the 2nd spot. Look at the Ortiz HR earlier.

i like him in the 2 hole cuz he gets on base right infront of ortiz and now ortiz is comin out of his little slump

ortizzle wasnt really ever in a big slump. listen to us talk about slumps. we dont know slumping untill we talk about jeter, in his 0-32 slump

Amen to this. I've been saying this since last year, but the only response I get is "WALKERS D SUCKS", mostly from people who had never made a note of his D. He wasnt bad at defense, he just wansnt extremely agile and didnt have too much range. But he made the plays that counted.

Well for one, the Sox led the AL in groundball hits that made it through the right infield in 2003. This was a direct result of Walker's limited range.

were they all hit to 2nd base???

DIDNT THINK SO

As I type Tek drives in Manny, 9-5, ITS IN THE BAG

But I still think Todd Walker was underrated beacuse of that limited range. Everyone jumped on him for it, but he had a higher fielding percentage than Reese did last year, and his offense more than made up for it (I'd say it made up for it ten fold). He carried the team through the playoffs, remember that?

But I guess the Todd Walker argument is for another thread. Sox lead 9-5.

Walker would have gone to salary arbitration and would have won and if the Sox wanted to resign him he'd be worth far beyond they were willing to spend for a player of his talents.

Check out this to get and idea of he ranked relative to other AL 2nd-basemen last season: Walker Link

And as far as "its in the bag", this is the Red Sox we're talking about here. Not to mention, a struggling Red Sox team. They're liable to implode at any second. Its never in the bag until the last out is in the glove for me.

foulke is in. its in the bag

I understand the payroll thing, that makes sense, but you'd rather have Mark Ellis and Luis Rivas on your team than Todd Walker?

DID I TELL YOU IT WAS IN THE BAG???

Great game. Millar and Mueller both proved that last year wasnt much of a fluke. This offense is back on track, no telling how they will do tomorrow.

Dirtdogman, make the game thread again tomorrow

On a bad note, Sheffield (Balco #2) homered while typing

One game isnt enough to prove or dissprove anything. They've still done a lot more bad than good this year (I point out mueller's two errors from yesterday). Sure, this can start to get us back on track, but its only one game that came after so many terrible ones, we have to remember that.
