    Passan: Boston Red Sox could entertain the idea of moving Jarren Duran or Wilyer Abreu

    The Boston Red Sox are 29-33 and nine games out of first place in the American League East. While they haven't waived the white flag themselves, Jeff Passan of ESPN is reporting that another GM indicated that star outfielders Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran could be moved before the trade deadline.

    It's been a disappointing season thus for for the Red Sox who entered the year with aspirations of ending their three-year postseason absence. Unfortunately, under performance and a bevy of injuries has the club four games under .500 and 4.5 games out of a wild card spot. 

    Duran and Abreu would draw significant trade interest if officially put on the block. Both players have been well above-average producers at the plate this season.

    The Red Sox have Yoshida to couple with Abreu to get a starting pitcher.  Even if Boston pays 1/2 of the remaining money on Yoshida it would be worth it to get it off the books while we are under the cap.  Abreu as a platoon hitter who Boston can sell as a normal outfielder with some good marketing points that may not be completely true but are believed by many fans.  This season is unrecoverable so to start 2026 we'll have Narvaez, Casas, Campbell, Mayer, Bregman and/or Story, Duran, Rafaela, Anthony and Devers.  There is your 2026 line-up.  The pitching staff needs a big upgrade.

    1 - Crochet is great, 2 - Buehler is not, 3 - Giolito is a maybe, 4 - Houck would need a comeback, 5 - Bello doesn't have the talent to be anything more than a long relief guy.  That is a lot of holes for Breslow to fill but the good news is the hitters are pretty much set.

    Taking Yoshida and Abreu and shipping them out for a quality SP makes sense.  Rafaela's defense is too valuable to trade.  Duran is an all-star so he must be kept.  Then the youngsters Anthony, Mayer, Campbell are the future of the Red Sox along with Casas and Narvaez.

    There is also YOUNG talent in the farm system like Cespedes and Romero to sweeten up the deal or avoid doing a payout of money for Yoshida.  Breslow has many options and his ace in the hole is Abreu because his value is above his skill level.  The big problem is Cora loves the guy so he needs to go first.

    No matter who the Sox trade in the next month, it has to be for pitching, pitching, pitching.

    Duran should return an actual starting pitcher with potential -- not an All-Star like Duran was (and still might be), but someone young and just breaking into a five-man rotation. 

    Abreu, even though he leads the team in homers, might not net anything more than a decent reliever or a minor league reliever with a big arm. Kyle Manzardo was a power-hitting prospect when Tampa traded him to Cleveland for Aaron Civale, at the time a viable member of the starting rotation. Manzardo's worth can be debated, but he also leads the Guards in HRs this season.

    As mentioned above, attaching Yoshida to any trade will require expanding the deal to include Red Sox prospects. Since Boston is still rebuilding -- and is content to just store Yoshida and his bat in practice camps -- that scenario doesn't seem likely until maybe the offseason.

    For Abreu: Kris Bubic, Nick Lodolo, Matt Liberatore, Bailey Ober, Ben Brown, Gavin Williams…
