  1. In my view , the trend of not using your best reliever to close , whatever the reasoning may be , is misguided , wrong and just not smart . Whether it is done to best win games , save money or any other reason , it is not a good idea . Blown saves are becoming a nightly occurrence around baseball . Just take a look . If you have an elite closer , and there are not too many of them , use him to get those elusive final outs . That is why the Yankees signed guys like Britton and Ottavino . So they could have Chapman for the ninth . Too many people want to re-invent the wheel .
  2. Thanks to the hokey innovation ( money grab ) known as the second wild card, Minny and Oakland were able to make it in . Their post season consisted of a trip to New York , a beating and a return trip home.
  3. As noted previously , Givens is pretty good , but closing ain't easy .
  4. That is quite a stretch . I very much doubt it . However , there is certainly an effort by baseball owners and management to control spending . No doubt about that .
  5. I don't really understand those odds . There are five post season spots , and only six A.L. teams with any chance of getting there . It's all about who will be the one who doesn't make it .
  6. Struggling with pitch recognition is practically epidemic in MLB right now . Everyone is looking to launch . I have never seen so many hitters chase breaking balls in the dirt as I see this year . There will be an all time high in strikeouts if this continues.
  7. Have to come away with a win when you have a lopsided advantage like Sale vs Miley .
  8. My comments about save opportunities , etc . were mostly in reference to the proposition that Cora lacked faith in the bullpen . I do like Barnes . I see him as our best arm in the pen . Brasier , to me , is kind of iffy . Interesting that Cora opted for Workman today , rather than Brasier . Walden is a surprise . Not sure yet if he is for real .
  9. Still confusing to me . Take Barnes, for example . What do they mean when they say he has had 14 career save opportunities? Obviously, he has had many more hold situations than 14 . So , the 14 refers only to actual save situations. Is that not right ?
  10. Well , back to the previous point . He has had 10 save opportunities. He has 6 saves . What about the other four save opportunities? Holds are entirely separate.
  11. 24 save opportunities is not a lot for a career . Look up Ryan Brasier on Baseball reference. Advanced pitching stats . Reliever pitching . It shows 10 save opportunities with six saves and four blown saves . 60 % save rate . Hold stats are listed separately. You can do the same for Barnes or anyone else .
  12. A hold is not a " save situation " . You don't get a save in that situation. In their careers , they have had just 24 actual save situations. They have converted 11 of them . They have had many more hold situations, but that is not the issue here . We are talking only about actual save situations.
  13. A save situation refers to the ninth inning. They have had 24 of those save situations. They have converted 11 of them . It has nothing to do with an earlier inning. I am only talking about what happened in a ninth inning save situation. If they were charged with a blown save in an earlier inning , it has nothing to do with this . Simply put , they have converted 11 out of 24 save situations.
  14. I guess that is a remote possibility. At least you are addressing the situation. Everyone else keeps talking about blown saves in an earlier inning. I feel like I am butting my head against the wall . Or else I am just not explaining it properly. The bottom line is , one way or another , they have converted just 11 out of 24 save opportunities.
  15. They have had 24 save opportunities. That means the ninth inning. That is all I am talking about . They have 11 saves out of those 24 opportunities. It has nothing at all to do with the eighth inning. Just the ninth inning save situation.
  16. That is completely irrelevant to the point . Of course I know about the blown save rules . This is as plain as I can state it ; they had 24 save ( not hold ) opportunities. They converted 11 of those into saves . That means that 13 times they failed to get the save in a save situation. Plain and simple.
  17. Bell , I am getting it . I understand exactly how you can get a blown save in a hold situation. But that is not the point . The point is that , in 24 save situations, they have 11 saves . That means they failed to get the save in 13 of those opportunities. It has nothing at all to do with hold opportunities. I can't make it any clearer than that . And I am not saying they suck . In fact , I like Barnes as the closer .
  18. I know it was a blown save . That is not the point . The whole point is that they have had 24 save opportunities and just 11 saves . That means that 13 times they failed to get the save . It has nothing to do with what happens in a non save situation. This is frustrating. I don't understand what is so hard about this .
  19. You are missing the point. I'm not saying they suck . Just giving numbers . Are they right or not ? If you have 24 save opportunities, and you have 11 saves , it means you failed to get the save thirteen times . It has nothing at all to do with holds . I honestly don't know what you are missing here .
  20. Bell , that doesn't explain away the situation here . I'll say it again , in a different way , between Barnes and Brasier, they have had 24 career save opportunities, and just 11 saves . Forget holds and hold opportunities.
  21. But I'm pretty sure the game Brasier blew in New York was not counted as a save opportunity. The fact remains , they have had 24 " save opportunities " and just 11 career saves .
  22. We have no way of knowing that now . 13 times seems like a lot for that to happen. Don't know about Barnes , but I don't recall that happening with Brasier . These things can get complicated.
  23. Well , I still ask , if they had 11 career saves and 24 career save ( not hold ) opportunities, what happened in the other 13 save opportunities?
  24. Glad we missed Verlander. Sale vs Miley should be a lead pipe cinch . No way the Sox lose today .
