  1. A top ten list in anything is strictly a matter of opinion. WAR is just a formula that some guy came up with to try and calculate a player's value. It has it's flaws , just like any other system you might use. People like it because it gives one simple numerical rating to each player. Personally, I am satisfied with just watching the games and looking at the traditional stats. You shouldn't need much help to recognize the ability of guys like Trout , Betts , DeGrom , Scherzer and such.
  2. Matt Barnes is a career 4.00 ERA guy. He will have his good moments, but probably not the guy you want to count on too much as a closer.
  3. The boys down at Clancy's were debating these formulas just the other night.
  4. Will Groome be the Best Man?
  5. Annual rite of spring: Early spring training performances, both good and bad, will be given way too much importance by eager fans.
  6. dgalehouse: " Story will move to second base if he signs with Boston. Bogaerts is the shortstop." Experts: " No way . Story is the superior shortstop. Bogaerts moves to second." Cora: " Bogaerts is the shortstop. Story will play second." Experts:" Good team harmony."
  7. dgalehouse: " Houck should be in the rotation." Experts: " No way. He only has two pitches. Can't get through the order a third time Belongs in the bullpen. " Cora: " Houck will be our number 3 starter. " Experts: " Crickets."
  8. He is having elbow replacement surgery.
  9. Trust your own eyesight to form your own opinions. You might be right or you might be wrong, but at least you are basing your opinion on what you have observed. When you put your trust in something like UZR , you are basically just trusting someone else's eyesight to form your opinions. Myself, I like to watch the games and check the box scores. That is good enough for me. Having a thousand different stats is not appealing to me. For those who like that stuff , good for you .
  10. I don't know if the Dodgers are done spending either. They have an impressive lineup, but I think the bullpen could be a real problem. They lost at least three key arms from the pen , including the closer. And the rotation might not be as good either. Scherzer is gone . And Bauer is very questionable. Keshaw is no sure thing. It shows how hard it is to build a complete team no matter the payroll.
  11. Agree. Bogaerts is an All Star shortstop. I don't know why he gets so many negative comments on here. I think folks study too many metrics. They let that influence their opinions. Whatever.
  12. Nothing wrong with the Sox lineup. They should have no trouble scoring runs. The defense will be improved from last year. The pitching is the question mark. A lot of ifs and maybes in the rotation. And the bullpen has a plethora of pedestrian arms. Hopefully, a few of them can rise above the mediocrity. If they do , it can be an interesting season. The A.L. East will be tough , but all of the contenders have their weaknesses. The expanded playoffs will help to maintain fan interest , which is the reason why they are expanded. $$$$.
  13. The Twins will not be trading Correa for Bogaerts. That really goes without saying. It should not even be mentioned.
  14. If the Twins's plan is to trade Correa at the deadline , I'm pretty sure they would want young prospects in return. I don't think they would be interested in Bogaerts.
  15. The minor league contracts are just a gimmick to manage the roster. Guys like Robles and Shaw are not signed to help " rebuild the farm" . If they look like they can help the Sox , they will get major league contracts. That is obviously the purpose of signing them. The minor league contracts mean nothing.
  16. Hansel Robles has an established career record as a 4.0 ERA guy. Your basic ham and egger. He throws hard and can get some strikeouts, so he has some value. But he is not a guy you really want to count on. He is the kind of guy you add to your bullpen when you don't want to spend more on someone better.
  17. Some teams don't care about spending . And some do. That's the difference between getting one of the best closers of all time like Jansen or a ham and egger like Robles.
  18. Sox signed fan favorite , Hansel Robles to boost the bullpen. Bitterly disappointed by failing to get Hansel , the Braves had to settle for Kenley Jansen.
  19. New York City logic: Visiting players don't have to be vaxed. Fans in attendance don't have to be vaxed. Home team players do have to be vaxed. Figure that one out.
  20. Story is probably a notch below Correa , but definitely will not cost as much. A lot has been made of his needing the mile high air to produce , but Fenway should also play to his strengths . He would replace the home runs we lost with Renfroe , while providing much better defense . He can also steal a bag or two. Assuming Correa signs with Houston , Story would be the best alternative . He can play second base and move over to short if Bogaerts leaves. This would allow Kike to stay in center , with JBJ in right ( or vice versa). The Sox really do need to do something to stir up a little excitement.
  21. One can never have enough left handers in the bullpen. Especially older ones.
  22. The average fan can easily calculate a player's batting average , home runs , RBIs , OBP , etc. Also , they can easily see a pitcher's wins , losses and saves. ERA and WHIP are also easy to calculate. However , that fan has no idea how fWAR is calculated. I dare say many of the folks who love that stat also don't know how it is derived. How many folks could sit down now and figure out a given player's fWAR . You are basically just trusting someone who has some sort of system. I am not saying that it has no value , just that the average fan simply is not that interested. And that goes for the whole , ever growing , alphabet soup of metrics as well.
  23. Correa is probably the one big move that could excite the fan base at this point. Will it happen?
  24. Checked on Sale's injury with the Red Sox ' chief medical officer , Dr. Vinnie Boombatz. Reporter: " Doctor , any word on Sale's injury? " Dr. Boombatz: " Well , he has what we in the medical community call a stress fracture in the rib cage , which is a cage- like thing with ribs. Basically , it is caused by too much stress. Too much stress is not good." Reporter : " Any word on how long he will be out?" Dr. Boombatz:" Well, these things can be tricky. At this time , it is too soon to tell." Reporter: " Thank you , Doctor." Dr. Boombatz: " Glad to help. Any time."
