  1. An additional thought--I guess you could say I've changed my mind. We have to consider the possibility, nay, probability that Moreland's decline was due to the injury. We also have to consider that Moreland may never fully recover from that injury. That is, even if he physically recovers, his fundamentals may be so out of whack that he doesn't start hitting again. If that is the case, then Duda or Alonso would be a significant offensive upgrade and an important addition. Our offense was much better earlier in the year when Moreland was hitting. Our offense has slumped considerably with the prolonged slumps of Bogaerts and Moreland. There is a possibility that Moreland never gets going again. Accordingly, it could be argued that the Red Sox need to trade for a first baseman even if that first baseman is Duda or Alonso.
  2. You're right. Duda 1.2 WAR Moreland 0.9 WAR Alonso 1.5 WAR Duda and Alonso are better offensive players but Moreland makes up some ground with his glove. But if you think Moreland is going to hit again and is just going through a bad stretch, he is comparable to Duda and Alonso. The weird thing about Alonso is that his oWAR is impressive (2.5) but not his dWAR (-1.4). In contrast, Moreland's oWAR is 0.6. If the Red Sox think Alonso is a better fielder than his current dWAR would suggest, trading for him would make sense--he is a much better offensive player than Moreland. But let's say Moreland, Duda, and Alonso are basically the same players in terms of value, where do the Red Sox go in order to improve the offense? The first basemen who are clearly better than Moreland either aren't available or the Red Sox don't have the minor league assets to acquire them, leaving us with the likes of Duda and Alonso. As such, maybe the Red Sox promote Devers, find a relief pitcher, and that's it. Just hope that guys like Moreland, Benintendi, and Bogaerts hit better over the next three months.
  3. Good decision. Cross off 3b as a trade deadline need and shop for a 1b. I would pursue Avila too.
  4. I would like to see the Red Sox acquire A.Reed and L.Duda. Duda is a better offensive player than Moreland and his defense, surprisingly, isn't far from Moreland's. I wonder what a Reed and Duda package would require? Can the Red Sox obtain both without giving up Groome? It would start with M.Chavis -- what more would the Mets ask for? I'm not buying the stuff on S.Leon, he is a replacement level catcher and a fringy major league player. He will probably be out of the league in a year or two. He can't hit. Sale doesn't need S.Leon to dominate. I would use Vazquez as my starting catcher, but it would be nice to occasionally get a better bat in there (Avila).
  5. Based on how he is trending, it doesn't look like Bogaerts will be a 3 win player this year. What a disappointment. At one time, we were hoping we had a C.Correa at SS. That's not happening. And Bogaerts defense, for a second year in a row, is giving up more runs than saving.
  6. Problem is, Leon's defense isn't all that great, and since he can't hit, he is pretty useless. If Leon could play strong defense, he would be worth keeping.
  7. The Red Sox haven't been linked to him (as far as I know) but I like the idea of trading for Alex Avila. He would replace S.Leon, who is pretty useless anyway. Avila would represent a significant offensive upgrade at catcher (currently has a 150 OPS+ whereas Leon has a 77 OPS+). There is a lot of debate concerning the defensive value of catchers. Avila has a .2 dWAR whereas Leon has a .8 dWAR. Leon doesn't do anything very well--he can't hit and isn't an exceptional defensive player--he is basically playing at a replacement level. Vazquez is pretty dreadful too. The catcher position is the Red Sox black hole that no one talks about.
  8. There is no point in trading for a 3b. We have a 3b in Devers. I don't want a relief pitcher -- J.Kelly will eventually return and it is not like he is recovering from an arm injury. Trade for Alonso and then call it a day. I would actually prefer J.Bour but there is no way to acquire him without giving up Groome.
  9. I like Nunez but he is basically replacement value this year. The more I think about it, the more I think Devers has been the plan all along. The Red Sox were in on Frazier to drive up the asking price on the Yankees. Trade for an offensive upgrade at 1b, promote Devers, and then go to war with that team.
  10. It has been reported that the Red Sox were never really close to acquiring Frazier and so, to me, it sounds like Dombrowski got involved in order to force Cashman to overpay. Mission accomplished. For the Red Sox to match or beat the Yankees offer, they would have had to include Groome, and I'm glad the Red Sox didn't go there. Let the Yankees trade away a highly regarded prospect for a so-so return.
  11. The thing about Harrison, I don't know if Chavis is good enough to acquire him as he is signed through 2020. To acquire Harrison, I'm guessing it will take either Devers or Groome and I'm not willing to pay that price. Players like Alonso, Nunez are easier to acquire since they aren't signed beyond this season.
  12. After the 2018 season when Miller is 34 years old.
  13. For me, Rutherford has a greater ceiling but a lower floor than Frazier. I would rather have Frazier if I needed a corner outfielder NOW. I would rather have Rutherford if I need a corner outfielder 2-3 years from now. The Yankees already have a glut of outfielders, with Judge, Hicks and Ellsbury all signed through 2019 and Gardner signed through 2018. As such, there is no immediate need or spot for Frazier--the Yankees would be better off with A.Miller and Rutherford. Cashman screwed this up big time.
  14. The Giants are signing Sandoval to a minor league contract. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/giants-to-sign-pablo-sandoval.html The Giants season is over and so they have nothing to lose. Moreover, Sandoval might even help them lose a few games, thereby strengthening their draft positioning. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised to see Panda hit over .300 with the Giants in the second half and play sparkling defense at 3b.
  15. True, but he has speed and makes contact -- thus, he has other leadoff "virtues." The Royals won a world series, almost won two of them, with A.Escobar batting leadoff, another guy who didn't produce high OBP.
  16. They should have just kept A.Miller, who is better than D.Robertson. They wouldn't have C.Frazier but they would still have B.Rutherford in their system. By keeping Miller, the Yankees would be around two games better than they are now, and would have one of the most dominant relievers in the game for the stretch run.
  17. Sweet! From MLB Trade Rumors: (1) Trade M.Shawaryn to the Giants for E.Nunez. (2) Trade M.Chavis and B.Johnson to the A's for Y.Alonso (3) Trade/release C.Young and promote Brentz Against RHP: Nunez (3b) Pedroia (2b) Betts (RF) Alonso (1b) Ramirez (DH) Benintendi (LF) Bogaerts (SS) Bradley (CF) Vazquez © Against LHP: Nunez (3b) Pedroia (2b) Betts (RF) Alonso (1b) Ramirez (DH) Bradley (CF) Bogaerts (SS) Brentz (LF) Vazquez © I like adding Nunez over Frazier -- more speed!
  18. This is why E.Nunez intrigues me. When it comes to the playoffs, the Red Sox might be better off adding a little more speed than power. Look at what the Royals have done over the last few years, they built an offense around athleticism and speed, and that kind of offense benefited them in the playoffs--they were one win away from winning two World Series titles in a row. If the Red Sox acquired Nunez, they would add another stolen base threat to their lineup and could move Betts to 3-4 in the lineup and would benefit from Betts' speed in the middle of the order. As Red Sox fans, we know the benefits of speed and stealing bases at a crucial time in the playoffs, i.e., DAVE ROBERTS!
  19. I agree on Frazier. He wasn't the best fit for the Red Sox--they already have plenty of right handed bats. In some ways, I like E.Nunez better than Frazier insofar as the Red Sox might be better off going after athleticism and speed than right handed power and low BA. There are other 3b options on the trade market and Devers might be the best option. They need a better hitting 1b than Moreland, IMO. The good thing about the Yankees acquiring Frazier is that they probably won't be in on Alonso.
  20. Dombrowski has to do something to improve the offense; doing nothing would be totally inexcusable and good reason to fire him. There are plenty of offensive upgrades on the trade market including Y.Alonso and E.Nunez is better than Marrero.
  21. Yeah, call up Devers and trade for Alonso, a legitimate middle of the order bat. (1) Trade B.Johnson and M.Chavis for Y.Alonso (2) Promote Devers (3) Promote Brentz, release/trade C.Young Against RHP: Betts (RF) Benintendi (LF) Pedroia (2B) Alonso (1b) Ramirez (DH) Bogaerts (SS) Bradley (CF) Devers (3b) Vazquez © Against LHP: Betts (RF) Bogaerts (SS) Pedroia (2b) Alonso (1b) Ramirez (DH) Bradley (CF) Brentz (LF) Devers (3b) Vazquez ©
  22. Rutherford is the prize for the White Sox. Cashman gave up a good prospect, never thought I would see the day. He probably tried to sell the White Sox the crappy J.Mateo but the White Sox wouldn't go for it (speculation on my part) and demanded a better prospect, either Frazier or Rutherford. Frazier is closer to the big leagues, but Rutherford might have a higher ceiling. At least the Yankees gave up something pretty valuable in this deal.
  23. Johnson should be an excellent trade chip -- the Sox don't have a rotation spot for him next year AND Johnson is out of options.
  24. Just saw that. Goodbye JD Martinez. Goodbye Frazier. What is Dombrowski doing? Spending too many hours with his hair stylist? Actually, my first preference is still out there: Y.Alonso. That would allow the Red Sox to improve the offense while keeping Hanley at DH.
  25. With Hanley playing 1b, perhaps the Red Sox will pursue JD Martinez for DH. That's OK -- Devers. (1) acquire JD Martinez (2) acquire relief pitcher (3) Devers takes over 3b. Some would say that it does not make sense to trade assets for a 3b when you have a guy like Devers in your system and just about ready to go.
