  1. This could be the makings of an awesome 1b platoon.
  2. Cordero is getting in some work at first base: https://nesn.com/2021/06/red-sox-testing-out-franchy-cordero-at-first-base-in-worcester/ This makes sense. Cordero doesn't have a clear opening in the OF now or in the future with Duran, Verdugo, and Renfroe looking like keepers. First base has been an area of weakness for the Red Sox this year, and it is not clear that Dalbec will hit enough to be a full-time player.
  3. Definitely worth watching: I learned a few things including, (1) Cole's numbers dramatically improved when he started using the sticky stuff; and (2) Corey Kluber is another pitcher who has been directly connected to using sticky stuff. Thus, I don't know if the Yankees can expect much from Kluber this year.
  4. In many mock drafts, Jobe ends up on the Tigers after the Rangers take Leiter. That is, the Tigers take Jobe only after their first preference--Leiter--is off the board. Thus, if the Rangers don't take Leiter, there is little chance that the Tigers would take Jobe over Leiter. With that said, the only way Leiter gets to the Red Sox is if Leiter can scare off the Rangers and Tigers from taking him due to high bonus demands. That strategy has worked with the Pirates, who seem intent on drafting someone who will sign for under slot, but it remains to be seen if the Rangers and Tigers will back off. Suspense will be in the air on draft night. Can't wait.
  5. A good game for Bobby D. I can't believe we have fans on this forum who want the Red Sox to replace a phenom like Bobby D. Does Richards get another start? Tough call. It was another weak effort but he did settle down after giving up 5 runs. Did he turn a corner? I would put Houck in the rotation, but the Red Sox could go with a six man rotation. In fact, Cora has discussed the idea of going with a 6-man rotation to give the starters some extra rest. Richards' spin rates continue to be problematic: Curveball: 2736 vs. 2750 last week, not used the week before, and ~3300 pre-crackdown Fastball: 2328 vs. 2304 last week, 2337 the week before, and ~2600 pre-crackdown Slider: 2620 vs. 2653 last week, 2619 the week before, and ~2900 pre-crackdown
  6. It is strange to see a Yankees lineup where the only LHB is Brett Gardner, who is sporting a .195 BA. I guess this will be the final season for Gardner, I don't see the Yankees bringing him back and no one else will want him. Yankees fans should give Gardner a warm goodbye at the end of the season, he has been a pretty good player over the years. Interesting, the Mets are playing the Yankees over the July 4 weekend. The Mets will want to show everyone that they are now the kings of New York, and they will want to kick the Yankees while they are down. It should be exciting to watch. I'm assuming Degrom will pitch one of those games, which is basically an automatic win for the Mets. Degrom v. Cole would be interesting to see.
  7. It figures it was a Mariners' pitcher. That's why the Mariners are in MLB, so that they can accomplish things like this.
  8. Cole will still be a really good pitcher going forward, but will he be less elite? Will he still be worth 300+ million? To be sure, the Yankees signed Cole to win a game like Sunday's loss to the Red Sox. It seems like some pitchers abused the rules more than others. Some pitchers didn't bother with sticky stuff and some did. In the case of Cole, not only did he use sticky stuff, but he used it in excess, and will likely be more pedestrian without it. That's a problem, though, because the Yankees are paying him over 300 million. This is a little reminiscent of Jason Giambi's situation from years ago. The Yankees signed him to a lucrative contract only to learn later that his stats were inflated due to steroids, and that without steroids he wouldn't be as great. Richards is a sticky stuff guy too, but at least the Red Sox can get out of the contract at the end of the season.
  9. The Mariners? As the great announcer Phil Rizzuto use to say, HOLY COW!
  10. I would move Richards to the bullpen, but if they are going to start Richards, I would promote Houck and use him if Richards gets off to another terrible start. Thus, option Rios to Triple AAA and promote Houck.
  11. The easiest way for the Red Sox to add a top-of-the-rotation starter (or something close to a top-of-the-rotation starter) is by drafting Leiter. I don't think Leiter is far from the majors right now. He will spend 2022 in the minors developing his pitches, particularly his changeup, and build up his innings. He will spend the first part of 2023 in the minors to control his innings and then he should be ready for the big leagues. Thus, I see Leiter earning a promotion to the major leagues sometime in 2023. I think Leiter will be really really good right away, kind of like Oswalt, who was a top-of-the-rotation starter from the beginning of his major league career. But if the Rangers and Tigers agree with that assessment, how can they possibly pass on Leiter? That question haunts me--it just doesn't seem logical for Leiter to slip to 4.
  12. Just watching C.Wong behind the plate in his first major league start, the guy is super-athletic. If Wong is the kind of catcher that Bloom covets, maybe Davis isn't the right fit for the Red Sox. While Davis can hit and has an awesome arm, it sounds like he isn't super-athletic behind the plate....... Leiter is my top preference, I would take him over Davis at this point. The comparison to Oswalt won me over. I just have a hard time believing that the Rangers and Tigers will pass on Leiter.
  13. Sawamura and Ottavino are obviously not available for tomorrow.
  14. I feel like I'm piling on, but Dalbec couldn't make that play?
  15. Imagine Dalbec and Chavis running a hitting clinic for youngsters. They would teach them how to swing at too many pitches, expand the strike zone, fall behind in the count, strike out on a consistent basis. That would some hitting clinic--no one would go.
  16. Was I the only one rooting for Stanton to walk there to load the bases rather than give Stanton something to hit?
  17. Speaking of Johan Santana, I remember when the Red Sox (Theo) were involved in trade talks for Santana, and it looked like something might get done. Someone on Soxprospects suggested including Ryan Kalish in the deal for Santana, and the forum completely flipped out like how dare you trade away a great talent like Ryan Kallish. That shows you the mentality of Soxprospects.com.
  18. He is starting for the Royals, no? He has an OPS+ of 115 compared to Dalbec's OPS+ of 80. If Santana isn't a starter, Dalbec is an independent league player. Are you talking about Johan Santana? I wonder how his life is going.
  19. Although: maybe we won't think this if you add Duran & C.Santana to the lineup. This is pretty nasty lineup, a championship caliber lineup: Santana 1b Verdugo LF Martinez DH Bogaerts SS Devers 3b Renfroe RF Duran CF Vazquez C Arroyo 2b
  20. After this game, the Yankees will send J.Montgomery back to Triple A so that he can relearn how to pitch. I almost feel bad for the youngster.
  21. I don't have the data on this but I've heard that while Rocker gets swings and misses he doesn't get enough swings and misses with his fastball and that has people concerned. This is something that pertains specifically to his fastball, not his other pitches.
  22. Because we have better things to do? This is why I think the Red Sox could include Dalbec in a trade for C.Santana: someone will believe they can fix him or that he will come around with more experience. Stranger things have happened; Dalbec doesn't have zero trade value. Some GM will dream on his power potential. The Red Sox have a good team this year, they could win the AL East, they could make some noise in the playoffs, they could even win a championship. As such, the Red Sox need to address weaknesses and try to fix them rather than ignore weaknesses with the hope that the hitter might turn into a quality player one or two years from now. Many years ago the Red Sox traded away Hanley Ramirez to increase their chances of winning a championship. It worked. Similarly, I don't believe Dalbec is the kind of player you hold on to when you have an opportunity to upgrade and increase your chances of winning this year.
  23. Richards was a cheater, but he will hopefully be dropped from the rotation. Check Sticky Fingers every inning on Sunday, the guy is a cheater. The Red Sox will send him to an early shower. Count on it!
  24. They optioned him to AAA, he is still on the 40 man roster. He can be recalled at any time--the 10 days have passed (or is it 15?). As others already know, Andriese and Workman don't have options. I would deactivate and release both, one roster spot goes to Houck (who replaces G.Richards in the rotation) and the second goes to Ort (who can be optioned and thus the red sox can alternate relievers Valdez, Ort, and Rios).
