  1. No need to badmouth any prospect. Hes on a learning curve and still has the tools to be good. Some just take longer. Maybe he makes that improvement in the minors this year.
  2. He didn't go long last night but that was a spring training game.
  3. Back from the Atlanta game. Ryan Weber looked very good against the regular Atlanta lineup. Peraza also impressed at 2nd base. Duran made a tough catch that was wrongly ruled a trap in center but there is no appeal in ST. He struck out twice and hit into a double play, despite making solid contact (foul) and a line shot for a double play. Casas got up once and strck out when cutting at a pitch off the plate. Nice night for a game.
  4. Have good seats behind home plate for the game tonight at Cool T stadium. Hope some regulars play.
  5. I totally agree. Perhaps current big name players on the downside of their careers should be let go in hopes of finding good prospects on the upside of theirs. 2020 is unlikely to be a season where we can compete at the highest level. Look to 2021 and beyond.
  6. Give him a break. I was watching the inning. Chatham, playing short had two misplays, Lin should have caught a ball in center but got a late break, Perez himself was slow to cover at first. He should have been out of it with a lot less damage so it is hard to judge much from that inning. I hate the way the announcers don't even say who is at bat. They obviously don't care.
  7. I agree with that approach. If they want to make a HOF category for known steroid users to placate those that are pushing for these guys to get in, then at the least make it known that they cannot be fairly compared to other clean players.
  8. Maybe under a special PED aided category. How many very good players who didn't cheat lose out on the HOF by being overshadowed by those that did.
  9. What is your basis for making that assertion. He was a star player but then used steriods to muscle up to something approaching the incredible Hulk. A few other players did that and were hitting home runs galore. Steroids and homeruns were closely linked. Hall of fame voters need to consider the context. Bonds might well have made the HOF without steroids, but the willingness to cheat makes voting for him a question of conscience.
  10. You are correct in that trade rumors change from day to day. what doesn't change is the need for the Sox to get another ML ready starter. So the incentive is still there for the Padres to get rid of a part of the Meyers contract and for the Sox to buy a young pitcher by taking on some of Meyers contract. I'm sure its not the only avenue that Chaim is pursuing.
  11. Lets await the cheating scandal penalties (if any) to see where we sit. I would hate to see the team draft be hurt further or beset with other penalties.
  12. Who will be the first $500 Million player? I think a few of us compare what we earned and did well with after multiple years of study and a high pressure mid level careers. It's absurd what can be paid to guys who play baseball (and other sports). I couldn't do what they can do but neither could they do what I did.
  13. It looks like using the Will Meyers contract takeover to obtain nearly ready pitching prospects will fail, so another avenue is needed. Perhaps they are looking at the cheating scandal resolution before trying to get a 5th starter through trade.
  14. It will be good to get it resolved. I wonder if the investigation uncovered possible cheating my other teams. That could be a real can of worms for Manfred and he probably wants to avoid tarnishing the entire league.
  15. Don't you think burdening the Sox minor league system with a long term contract of $72 million matters? You can argue that Castiillo's plight is an artifact of stupid baseball rules, but I believe wasting resources on players who never get the chance to play in the majors for more than token appearances matters to the team if not the CBT.
  16. To me the question is whether it makes sense to get every last penny a player can get. I sense that many young people would answer that it does. When does the idea of enough money to live comfortably with perfect security get realized, while other values also come are considered? How many fancy houses, cars, airplanes, vacations, jewelry, etc does one person need to make them happy? When one player breaks the bank, other players have a lot less to divy up so perhaps the chance of winning goes down. Is winning important? A player may choose an environment to live in and raise a family in, but does that choice get prioritized as much as the desire to get every last dollar? I am older (old) and am comfortably off financially. I would suggest to any player that they should consider more than just the most money when they negotiate their contracts.
  17. There is a potential for multi-team trades in which JBJ might be involved. Bloom is playing a lot of angles so lets see what he can create. I don't think Moreland is going anywhere this year.
  18. I'm a little confused as well. We should be set at catcher and even have picked up a prospect at that position. We have needs at other positions unless they see Lucroy in some other role.
  19. The Pedroia and Price contracts represent sunken costs and were necessary corrections. Only time can rid the club of those drags on the budget. The Sale and Eovaldi contracts are ongoing and one would hope will return some value to the team, if not equivalent to the expenditure. I believe the JBJ contract represents an overpay and may be shed early, whereas JDM will probably stay around and opt out for next season. This should leave Bloom a good deal of cap room to make significant improvements. It will take time but I agree with the direction. The Yankees on the other hand are poised to have a good year but may have spent themselves into future problems. They have retained a higher quality farm, so the effects of their spending may not be as great as what has happened to the Sox but the breakdown of a couple of highly paid pitchers would be hard to overcome.
  20. Now that you are back, I want to express my condolences on the lossws of your frien and also my surprise at your quick return. It sounds like Verdugo willl not get a rigorous ST due to the stress fracture in his lower back. It happened last May and he tried to play through it. One question is if it happened last May, why hasn't it fully healed in the off season? Are we talking a moderate to long term DL stint to start his Boston career? Did we do our diligence on this trade?
  21. The word is the results of the Sox investigation will be out by the end of next week. Thats a good thing to put to bed. Maybe it won't be as severe a finding as the Astros was.
  22. With the roster coming together as spring training approaches the new rules will allow for 13 pitchers and 13 other roster players. With 2 catchers, a DH and 7 other field players, we will have 3 additional players to platoon or for utility use. One of those will be Moreland as a part time 1st baseman and occasional DH. There is still a question in the outfield. Will JBJ still be here if Pillar is here? There are options for a utility outfielder including taking one of our very speedy prospects for base running and utility outfield. Depending on the Chavis/Dalbec resolution as the regular right handed first baseman it could leaqve Chavis competing for 2nd or one of those two in the minors and one of Lin/Chatham being considered for the final utility spot. The Pillar physical information should be concluded this weekend, allowing any further outfield moves to be concluded with certainty. The rule change of making the minimum time on the injured list 15 days, up from 10, may also make managers think of parking a guy with a hangnail. There was much less of that in the past.
  23. I would think it means that some of the players were getting a look at the signs in the replay room. Whether that was used as a real time aid to the hitters begs the question on the severity of the act. I would guess that kind of thing happened with quite a few clubs so the discipline would have to take that into consideration.
  24. When he clears the physical check, it will become official. That may come over the weekend. I believe that may be a precursor for a trade deal involving JBJ. Maybe a pitching prospect and a reduction of salary clearing the way for signing a starting pitcher. Cmon Bloom, make moves which will improve the team.
  25. Moreland is back as insurance at 1st and for DH on occasion. It will either be Dalbec or Chavis as the regular 1st baseman and will depend on how these guys progress. I see Chatham as our do all utility player with possibilities at 2nd, SS and third Not sure how 2nd will play out as we need to see the new players at Fenway. Chavis should get a shot. Lin may be odd man out here. Marco is likely going to have to get some PT in AAA before being considered, but still has potential depending on how the alternatives are coming along. The reality is the infield is in flux I have tickets to a spring traing game against the braves in March. ($50 a seat) and will have a look then at some of our new players.
