  1. Checked team HRs so far this year at 109. Don't know if that includes 4 today. Compared to 159 for all of last year we can see the tremendous lift that Martinez provides, plus many of our guys are having better years.
  2. Good to see the bottom of the order hitting and providing balance to this team offensively. Everyone by Devers in the starting lineup has at least one hit tonight. Keep a few for tomorrow.
  3. Currently it looks like Boston and NYY are the beasts of the East and may try to help themselves to get better (scary thought). Either may need to do that to face Houston who are coming together and on a tear. Cleveland is probably going to win as I don't see the competition for them. Will it be the Sox or the NYY to play in a one gamer against the Mariners or Athletics? Stay tuned.
  4. I still play at my advanced age in the slow pitch leagues, where the fences are set at 300 feet. Mostly, guys over 70 don't hit the ball out and few over 75 can. Those age groups use hotter bats. The younger guys have more bat speed, hence power, and use restricted bats to keep the HR's down some. A lot are kind of heavy so it is nice to see ones who keep in great shape and can still run well. I watched a co-ed league the other night and saw a young woman on a team that could have been a model. Probably 25 and very athletic. She hit to the fence and made great contact every time, Very good speed and I witnessed her run down a long drive over her head. She was every bit as any of the young men playing except for ultimate power, but she probably was 50 pounds lighter than the big hitters. I didn't talk to her but presume she was from some college fast pitch league finding her ownly competition in the co-ed league. This was also in NC in the mountains.
  5. Tell me with whom you associate, and I will tell you who you are (Goethe)
  6. Neither do I. I see a role for a quality left handed reliever. A good quality right handed hitter (could be a 4th outfiellder) would be the next get, but if I could reduce the risk of not getting Pedroia back by getting a youngish second baseman who would be with us for a few years, I would pull the trigger on thar option. Whatever JBJ will give us this year, I don't see us replacing him until next season based on his total performance this year.We also will live with our catching staff although Swihart may be a first man out if we pick up new roster players.
  7. I think you are reaching with your last statement. I said I thought Cora made a glaring mistake this time and have no better way to characterize it. You have extended that comment to imply that I said Cora does not understand the game. I did not say directly or imply that.
  8. Back to Beni. I'd like to see him try to pull a higher percentage of his BBIP. He doesn't have the power necessary to hit balls out to center consistently and too many of his hits there are long fly balls. Same going to left He has a great swing and I would like to see him get rewarded on a higher percentage of his hard hit balls.
  9. Managing a baseball team is so much more than consistently making the right in game decisions. Handling the players and understanding how they can contribute are things most fans haven't experienced. I do think some fans have a deep understanding of the game and are qualified to comment on some of the in game moves, or lack of moves thar managers are involved with. Cora's handling of Wright and his allowing him to be pounded to 10 earned runs in 3 innings certainly ranks up there as one of his most inexplicable lack of moves this year. Everyone, including managers can and will make mistakes. The problem with that one is it was so glaring that it deserves comment.
  10. A trade could free up some money so that is another possibility. I hope Pedey comes back and can play near to his old form but if he doesn't it's an impediment to the team this year and going forward. I have no guess what DD is planning but sitting tight might not be the best idea either. I know you don't advocate that. We could use strengthening. Maybe Nunez and Holt can help us. Doesnt appear that Swihart can and probably not Lin. Second base and/or relief pitching are the two must likely area needing an upgrade.
  11. That we did and we finally supported Sale. Best of all JBJ had 3 hits and it looked like he had his swing more under control. Lets hope this is the start of a more effective offensive showing from him. We don't need much offense from him, just not an automatic out.
  12. A lot has to do with location. Let see his confidence go up and his command may get better. They hit him hard the first time, but he may be of some help going forward.
  13. You consistently don't mention Scooter Gennett but he would fill our needs best. Twenty eight, second baseman, excellent hitter and spark plug. It is kind of pie in the sky. but to ignore the best fit for us is being incomplete.
  14. I was in a small group ministry meeting at a church I belonged to and mentioned that I never smoked pot or used drugs and the retort was, want to try some? Just shows it is really prevalent in society, probably a lotmore so since the Vietnam war experience.
  15. The news I have seen indicates more information will become available on Monday as reports get filed. Better to wait until something more definitive comes out before giving credence to these rumors. The Sox are claiming they had no knowlege of any drug involvement, but they also don't want to throw anyone under the bus here.
  16. Wonder if Cora thinks he should keep players out with the sniffles. I come from a time when guys stayed in the lineup if they were in any shape at all to play. Cora's approach is a new way for me and I question it. Tingles, sniffles and boo boos are resulting in weaker teams on the field. When it gets down to crunch time in Sept., will the loss of a game here or there be what keeps us in the wild card? Maybe Cora's way will give us a healthier team, just a different approach than I would use. I wonder how the players feel about it?
  17. He didn't face many 100 mph pitchers, rhe slider or 5 inning starters
  18. Hard to come back with a weakened lineup in there. I know Bogaerts has a sprain and will be sidelined for a short while. I guess Mookie Betts felt a little off. Sometimes I wonder how decisions are made to give players rest. Not like the old days where players went out to play with some injuries. So we have a lineup with Beni, JDM and Moreland backed up by weak and weaker. Kind of cuts down on the run scoring potential. ERod is throwing his typical game. Good stuff but a high pitch count per inning and a difficult putting people away. Lots of nibbling. He would be a better pitcher if he increase his pace and got ahead of most batters. Lin's error didn't help the situation but only accounted for 1 of the 6 Mariner's runs.
  19. Cora was willing to lose the game for whatever reason, but the players thought differently about it. Good for them, bad for Cora.
  20. Cora was the substory to this plot. Why did he allow Wright to give up 10 earned runs in 3.1 innings? He was willing to give up the game but the Sox players had other idea.
  21. The way I look at it, we are a very good team who may well get forced into a one time winner take all wild card game. What is troubling is that we have not taken steps to make improvements which might result in the Yankees getting to play in the wild card game. True, we don't have a lot of available resources, but why not use what we have to make improvements where we can? The sooner the better.
  22. Hamilton's name came up because a Reds poster on their web site brought it up along with a couple of other trades I didn't even mention. I don't think any posters here were serious about that particular trade. On the other hand, JBJ's just snake bitten at the plate and continues his downward spiral. I see CF as our second weakest position at this point. How long can you keep a good fielder in the lineup that can't hit even 200? We probably have one move we can make. If Pedey is truly not able to make it back then we need to shore the position up. Hernandez is a possibility but probably not this year, otherwise, there are some candidates on the market. If JBJ continues his hitting funk into the ASG (1/2 season), we also have a problem to solve. Which area do we try to improve or do we stand pat? I think we make a move and get the best deal at one of those two positions.
  23. Betts looks like he is getting back in the groove. Having been out for so long, he did need to get his stroke back and today it was evident that he got his stroke and confidence back.
  24. Playing a couple of games in SC in the 98 deg heat is a draining experience and a reminder that even the young and strong guys go through a grueling schedule. One has to assume it wears on those that are in the lineup every day. When our best guys wear down a little and go through slumps, for any reason, even unlucky BBIP locations, with our lineup there is really a weak backup. We have known this from early in the season but we somehow have been saying one of two things. 1. We are winning now and have a good record, so there is no need to panic and make a move until later on (presumably after we start to falter, if we do) 2. Cherington backed us into a corner and we have very limited financial capability and a depleted minor league system, so we aren't flexible enough to try to solve the obvious weaknesses (DD's legacy to date). Live with it baby. So here we are, probably not in a panic situation, our pitching is still pretty good, except in BP depth maybe, but how long do we go before we shore up where we are weakest?
  25. If need be and it does seem likely, I would move him to 1st base before trading him. The bat is likely to get better given more time so we need to find his best fit. Maybe we trade Moreland and then go for a 3rd baseman but I don't see Devers making the switch to first in season.
