  1. Not fair bringing up facts.
  2. Leon's effect on payroll is roughly $2.5 mil whereas Swihart's is $910K. The money saved there might be used along with what we currently have later in the season if Leon goes. Swihart's capability at the plate is perceived to be superior from a BA standpoint. On the other hand, Swihart has more years of team control and is likely worth more in a trade. Your arguments about defensive value also need to be accounted for. I think it will come down to which of Leon or Swihart get sought after by another club with backup caqtching needs
  3. Management decisions in the past have kept our payroll high, while not getting full value for the money spent. They have also depleted our minor league system. They did result in excellent performance including a WS win. Other teams have made poor management decisions, and it is not that uncommon. The better managements make the fewest bad decisions. So going forward, I would hope we could stay below the second salary threshold and maybe even below the first while still fielding a competitive team that can vie for postseason play. To do that, we need to keep our real stars, supplement those with solid but not overly costly pros like Moreland and Pearce and bring along young players being developed in farm system. Bennintendi and Devers are typical ofr those. It is time for DD to concentrate on the farm system to make that happen. In a way, our excellent performance these past years has made farm system development more difficult as we draft so low.
  4. I would tend to think it will depend on the health of our regulars. Having Nunez and Holt in backup roles for 2nd, 3rd and SS doesn't work too well if Pedey can't play a significant number of games or if Devers or Bogaerts is on the injured list for 15 or more days. In that case probably Lin comes up with either Chavis or Chatham as possibilities. Dalbec is not out of the question depending how the minor league results stack up. Lin can even play OF if a need develops there. As far as pitching, if we have a starter injured then D. Hernandez will get the call. I haven't seen enough to sort out the BP possibilities. Feltman is intriguing. Poyner has looked good at times. It kind of a wait and see.
  5. Didn't he have a college background? In that case, he is not kid and he does have good stuff. One would expect his route to the majors could be accelerated because of the experience factor. He should get to AAA to see what he can do.
  6. Possibly it will be Vazquez/Swihart in which case at least part of the time there would be some speed out of the catcher position. I generally agree with your lineup though. If you believe in righty/lefty then maybe Devers/ Bogaerts is the way to go.
  7. Ian Browne is still thinking Leon will be gone.
  8. I like your tone. In the case that he is telling the truth about not knowing one of his knee medications may have given him the PED positive rating, like anyone else he deserves the benefit of the doubt. His career may well be over, but if he can come back from this then its all to the good.
  9. You are probably right as there must have been a lot of medications associated withhim getting through the injury and pain. No excuse but in reality he may have stumbled into the infraction. Too bad for the club and for Wright
  10. We also have this year to assess the trajectory these players are on, which will offer some guidance on who to keep and for home much. Pitchers in particular can have major changes in one season. We clearly need to shed some payroll and Moreland/Pearce are obvious candidates. Pedey is an unknown but we gave him a longer term contract. Nunez probably won't be resigned but Holt may stick as the ultimate Utility player. Bogaerts will likely be the big payroll guy to leave. I like him as a player but to be realistic, he is one that can make the most difference. We can find someone to match his defensive capability but it is asking a lot to get a solid offensive player at a big discount.
  11. I agree. We may have to lose Bogaerts or JBJ but hopefully not both. Being able to bring along a few minor league pieces will help that situation. I am really wondering if this is the year JBJ's efforts to improve his offense really pays off.
  12. There has been a lot of chatter that budget considerations will not allow us to keep all of our younger stars based solely on the budget impacts going into 2020 and beyond. Since Betts seem like priority 1, and our young core players of Beni and Devers are keepers, it does make sense to look to younger players to replace our current tandem ist basemen. If JBJ has a good 2019, he too may be on the keeper list. Bogaert may be a possible loss to the team and if so a guy like Chatham at least comes to mind. He looks like a solid fielding presence but his hitting is unlikely to come close to what Bogaerts can do. There will be hard choices and 2nd base is also an area of consideration.
  13. CJ Chatham is making a case for his development into a SS of the future. I assume we will try to keep Betts above all of our young players and will need to keep starting pitching resources. If Bogaets becomes too expensive to keep, and I definitely would not want to see him go, then perhaps Chatham would become a reasonable replacement.
  14. It 79 degrees here now and not a cloud in the sky. We have company now so all I can so is to sneak off for a few hours and play in my softball league. Florida is a great place to be this time of year and we get out in mid April when temps can get to 95 and above with high humidity. They are going very slow with Pedroia so it is hard to tell how he is really doing. From what I hear, he will be into full participation next week. Second base is the most unsettled field position since we know we willl have two solid catchers no matter how we go. Relief pitching is also unsettled but we have all the elements that we are likely to see opening day.
  15. These spring training games don't tell us much and are more about seeing some new faces and for the coaches to watch at bats and defensve play of some of the almost ready guys. Today we were blown out but it really doesn't matter. I would like to see Pedroia make it back soon as he is an open question. Other of note are Devers looks slimmer and more mobile, JBJ's swng mechanics are different. Nothing really has differentiated the catchers as yet. Hitting against scrub pitchers doesn't really give much information of how they will do against solid ML pitchers. I suppose they can watch the defensive moves of Swihart to assess improvement there. It is fun to go to the ST games but in Ft Meyers, the sun beats down and it is impossible to sit in the sun for long. I made it to 4.5 innings and 4 innings before being fried to a crisp.
  16. Still, I'd stay away from him.
  17. Thats what it took to get him, but I think it was insanity to go to such a long term contract. This runs until he is 40. Big money front loaded and he almost certainly will drop way off in performance over the length of the contract. I'm glad we are not involved although this sets the tone for negotiations with Mookie. I'll be interested to get Kimmi's take on this one.
  18. I have been a fan since the late 1940's and like fans from my era, we learned to have hopes for our team coming out of Spring training. Most of the time they were dashed along the way, but we still had hopes and finally those have been fulfilled multiple times. This year my hopes are that JBJ will have finally learned through better hitting coaching, listening to JDM and reaching a level of maturity that his bat will be consistent during the season and that he will remain healthy. In fact, good heallth in the rest of the Sox outfield will be imperative for us to have a good season, with really only three solid players backed up by JDM for 10% of the games and possibly Holt for another 10%. We may have the best overall outfield in the majors. Great fielding and good hitting. Lot to be hopeful about.
  19. There are quite a few on the site that seem to push for getting rid of Swihart in favor of keeping Leon. Don't believe that move is so obvious as Moon would haved us believe. I think it is a U-Pick-em decision. No right or wrong answer. It would be nice to have a catcher that could contribute something on offense to go with good defense. In the mean time, the Pedroia story continues on. I hope he will be sound upon arrival but am skeptical that he is capable of being our regular second baseman. We have subs but if they are heavily used at 2nd they are no longer available for general use. Is Chavis still working out at 2nd?
  20. Does it really matter?
  21. Marco Hernandez may have lost his chance to come up to the Sox. So many injuries and time away may have severely lessend his chance. Chatam is no power guy, but he is a decent fielder and line drive hitter and may be ready to come in as a sub. Lets hope we don't need a sub for Devers this year. He is in better shape and may just become a star. If he does, the Sox become even more formidable. We have 2 at first this year with solid possibilities going forward including Casas. Catcher could be an issue going forward, but it still no reason to keep three. We really have no outfield backup, Maybe Lin is our best current fill in. I think Travis will be gone.
  22. Almost certainly a catcher will be traded or cut. Not a large salary reduction, but they all open a little leeway.
  23. Looking for Devers to be the most imporved player on the squad this year.
  24. That's the thinking behind not offering long contracts, especially to players beyond their prime. Pedroia's contract didn't make a lot of sense, even though some would say we got a bargain. To me it was a bad bargain.
  25. I generally agree with your point of view, but would rank Vasquez on top with Swihart and Leon being a wash.
