  1. It was clear in the off season that we had a high risk situation with Pedroia. It was also clear that we had two utility guys either of which could fill in except Nunez was thought to be back healthy. He is on the DL with chronic leg issues as well and we need more than a single utility guy to back up the infield. Several of us suggested making a run at Merrifield at that time, but we either didn't have the interest, financial cap space or trade pieces to get it done. Too bad as we are in a bit of a pickle at this point. Chavis is doing okay, but it is likely the pitcing staffs will find holes in his big swing in the period ahead. Right now he is our answer at 2nd.
  2. To state the obvious, our offense is not doing enough to win games and is almost as big a problem as our pitching. The first game we faced good pitching and our offense had issues with Bogaets providing most of our offensive threat. Colten was our Achillies heel. In the second game each of our table setters were each on base three times and our Newbie had two hits, includiing a HR and yet we were only able to score 2. JBJ was 0 for as usual. We need a spark from somewhere else in the lineup and are not getting it. The good work done in Tampa is largely undone and we had better watch out or we will go into May in the cellar.
  3. JD took two fastballs on the plate and swung at one outside. We had an opportunity but couldn't get the big hit with two of our better hitters up.Ugh!
  4. Seems as the suggestion I made on the 21st has come to pass. Hernandez and Latkins up and Poyner down. The BP has been used too much to be sustainable so the move was necessary. Wish I could make a suggestion to improve the offense. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any simple solutions to that issue. I have been on Beni for not pulling more. He could improve his productivity if he would do it, but his style is that of an Oppo swing. Don't see much to do with our weak sisters in the lineup other than to replace them.
  5. Our offense was handled by the Tiger pitching today. Except for Bogaerts, the offense was pretty flat. I don't think we can afford to have as many unproductive bats in the lineup. JBJ, Leon, Nunez this year, Holt this year, and Pedey this year all have been sub par to date. We are not very flexible being up against the competitive second tier cap and having little in the way of exceptionsl young offensive players in the minors. Lets hope that we can get our better hitters going. Betts shows signs, Devers can help a lot, but we are depending on 2/3rds of the lineup for the majority of our offense.
  6. If we didn't have JBJ but we had a good fielder who could get a few hits, we might actually have been better off. It's not fair to say we would have been swept. Drawing a questionable conclusion.
  7. You have to look at the alternatives. Pedroia is injured and may be out for longer than 10 days, perhaps with another rehab assignment to get him more comfortable at the plate. Nunez who is not a particularly good fielding 2nd baseman and has knee problems of his own. He may well need more rehab time. Holt who can play 2nd but shouldn't be full time, as he is needed at a sub at several positions. Lin is a good defensive player, but is pretty light hitting. So there doesn't appear to be a hands down first choice for the position and Chavis looks like he can do a reasonable job at 2nd and add some pop to the lineup. This doesn't have to be a long term solution, but certainly is a reasonable short term solution.
  8. I wonder when they knew he had loose bodies in his elbow. It might have been better to have the operation preseason, unless of course this condition developed in ST or the first few games. If that is the case, will he be constanttly plagued with bone chips year to year?
  9. Kimmi wants to remind us that its defense, defense, defense that is an important or probably super important aspect of winning games but on the other hand, I think it is balance, balance, balance that requires runs to be scored and defense to be played to win games. When a player gets expensive, as JBJ is getting to be, he has to deliver both facets of the game. If not, we can find a FA for the same money who can deliver a better balance. JBJ's trade value, what other teams think he is worth, indicates something about his real ML value if one wants to monitize it. If we extend him for more than he is worth, shame on us.
  10. The amount of work the pen is getting could result in dead arms later in the season. I would hope we would explore using other 40 man roster pitchers and sort out the wheat from the chaff soon. We have D. Hernandez and T. Latkins who might fit in instead of Poyner and other weaker performers. It would be great if the work could be spread out more equitably.
  11. Was it insufficent activity in ST? I certainly don't know, but it is a plausible idea.
  12. American League East leader sees their lead shrink. Great to get 3, especially against them.
  13. Moreland has 7 now. He is doing well even though some on the site have suggested we shouldn't have resigned him as a money saving move.
  14. Devers is 22 and has an upside, probably at 1st base in 2020. Bradley is approaching 30 and has shown geat defense but inconsistent and often very poor offense now for many years. Things won't change for the better with him and the money we will pay him should be applied to a better overall player. 2020 is a good target to make the change.
  15. The word is that he will start today, presumably at 2nd base. He is 216 pounds and looks strong so doesn't need PEDs to hit the ball hard.
  16. Maybe because he is hitting .133 with more than 12 % of the season gone by. It is a pattern with this guy and perhaps we should look to do better. Could it be more stupid to support a chronic undedrperformer until he and a few others sink the chances of a team with the highest payroll in baseball?
  17. Our furnace failed yesterday and it won't get fixed until the parts come in, maybe Wednesday. Lat night got to 37 so I went to bed early, with the Sox ahead 5 to 4 after the Sox squandering a chance in the 8th for more runs. I saw the lineup of Bradley, Lin and Leon for the 9th and assumed we mght blow it. Nice to see Bradley actually got a hit and Chavis was used and came through. The Sox should find a way to strengthen the bottom of the order and why not give him a chance?
  18. 1st and 2nd and nobody out and nothing from it. We have Bradley, Lin and Leon up in the 9th. We needed runs in the 8th.
  19. So two months out of the rotation and possibly time to reestablish his mound presence. Big hit but this kind of thing happens. I presume these loose bodies (bone chips) were there earlier but we waited until now to try to deal with them. Why?
  20. I think it's time to consider cutting ties with JBJ. Not now but certainly to look for an improvement for next season. If he still is doing poorly in July, I would consider replacing him this year.
  21. Then there is JBJ with over 12 % of the season gone he is hitting 138 with a 315 OPS. Would it be a panic to look for a replacement for him?
  22. We should look for a replacement for Leon for next season. Lets see where the team is after this bad start. We may be looking at rebuillding to some extent and a solid replacement catcher could be part of that.
  23. Maybe we should try Chavis at 3rd. Devers needs a little goading.
  24. Two sinkers up in the zone and down the middle. The Sox didn't miss.
