  1. So far this year the Astros have handed out 49 losses to American League West opponents. That's not inflating the division's win total. The AL West, like all divisions, has a cumulative .500 record in intra-division games. While the AL East had an overall cumulative losing record entering Friday's games, the AL West was 35 games above .500. But, hey, the Orioles beat the Mariners on Friday.
  2. The Yankees and Rays are a combined 73 games above .500 while the Orioles and Blue Jays are a combined 84 games below .500. The Red Sox fatten their win total playing in an American League East that has a cumulative record under .500 (381-383). In contrast, the stronger and more balanced American League West has a significantly better cumulative record at 400-365.
  3. If the Red Sox were in the National League the Sox might not be eight games above .500. Excluding games against the Orioles and Blue Jays, the Red Sox are under .500, including a 10-10 record against NL clubs.
  4. On that note, MLB Prospect Watch ranks Triston Casas No. 86 on its updated Top 100 prospect list: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2019?list=prospects
  5. Eduardo Rodriguez has enjoyed a fabulous year but has a wide disparity of values by bWAR and fWAR. The Boston lefthander and Seattle lefthander Marco Gonzales have each made 32 starts this year, Rodriguez totaling 191 innings and Gonzales 189 innings. Rodriguez with 6.2 bWAR has more than doubled the 2.7 bWAR posted by Gonzales. However, Rodriguez with 3.4 fWAR trails Gonzales with 3.6 fWAR. One website gives Rodriguez a surplus trade value of $26.9 million and Gonzalez a surplus trade value of $39.6 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ Rodriguez is one year younger than Gonzales but has only two more years of team control while Gonzales has four more years of team control.
  6. Boston Globe columnist Alex Speier writes about the 2020 Red Sox starting rotation: https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2019/09/18/onball/Mm1wOjPvNDzbjEOushD6HI/story.html?et_rid=1739401789&s_campaign=108stitches:newsletter

  12. The uncertain futures of Chris Sale, David Price and Nathan Eovaldi make for a challenging offseason for the Red Sox front office. The difficulties are compounded by the loss of Rick Porcello, the lack of promising starters in the pipeline and questions about whether Eduardo Rodriguez can repeat his 2019 success. This outsider will follow with great interest.
  13. The would-be hitter might be reluctant to enter the batter's box. Kinda like dodge ball with a hardball.
  14. This long-time West Coast resident has a soft spot for the Quad Cities, which this year alone have hosted concerts by Paul McCartney, Steely Dan, James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt, among others. The Quad Cities boast the Quad Cities Symphony, Opera Quad Cities, Ballet Quad Cities and the annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival. Broadway Across America produces about a half dozen shows each year in the Quad Cities, which also offer several community playhouses. Sports attractions include the John Deere Classic PGA stop, the Quad City Steamwheelers indoor football club, the Quad City Storm hockey club and next week's Quad Cities Marathon*. Three casinos call the Quad Cities home. To top it off, the Quad Cities have my favorite minor league ballpark of all time: https://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-minor-league-ballpark/ * I ran the Quad Cities Marathon in 2013 and last year ran the QCM 5K, both when I was back in the area for a high school reunion
  15. A conundrum by definition is not simple. The return on a Mookie Betts trade would likely be less at the trade deadline than in the upcoming offseason. That diminished return could be felt in 2021 and beyond. Like most teams, the Red Sox face difficult choices.
  16. Measures the Red Sox take to remain “somewhat competitive” in 2020 are the measures that will make it increasingly difficult to be more competitive in 2021 and beyond. That’s the conundrum.
  17. Baseball America ranked Yoan Moncada No. 3 preseason 2016, No. 1 midseason 2016 and No. 2 preseason 2017. Baseball America ranked Anderson Espinoza No. 19 preseason 2016, No. 15 midseason 2016 and No. 21 preseason 2017.
  18. Limit the number of foul balls with two strikes, making the third such foul ball strike three. Or not.

  21. According to one website, Mookie Betts ($48.9 million) and J.D. Martinez ($25 million) have a combined surplus value of $73.9 million while David Price (-$44.8 million) and Nathan Eovaldi (-$26.6 million) have a combined negative value of $71.4 million: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ That four-player package would significantly reduce the Red Sox payroll in 2020 and beyond but might not appear attractive to a trade partner.
  22. Boston righthander Nathan Eovaldi has not exceeded 124.2 innings in season since 2015 and is five seasons removed from his career-best 199.2 innings in 2014: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/eovalna01.shtml Eovaldi has pitched a total of 163.2 regular-season innings since 2016.
  23. Boston righthander Rick Porcello has posted 10.7 fWAR, valued at $85.6 million, so far under his four-year, $82.5 million contract with the Red Sox: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=pit&lg=all&qual=y&type=6&season=2019&month=0&season1=2016&ind=0&team=3&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=&enddate=
