  1. Again they're scoring runs for ERod
  2. ..and I'm saying, JD just please don't hit into a DP. LOL
  3. So less height on the seams = less affect of air flow = less break. We seem to agree that the new and improved baseball is the problem...but disagree as to why. Oh, well!
  4. Good stuff. Thanks.
  5. I've tried (unsuccessfully) to throw that pitch. The stress it puts on the elbow is amazing. But then again I'm not a ML pitcher, either.
  6. I'm not sure what you mean by "better". Do you mean the height of the seams would have less affect on the ball, or more?
  7. I see no problem here. If the analytics say it can't happen then it didn't. Your eyes are lying to you.
  8. You're implying that the height of the seams (and therefore the grip the pitcher gets on the ball) is insignificant, then? I'm not sure I'm buying that. I'm aware that the reason the college ball went to lower seams is to increase the flight of the ball while not endangering the safety of the pitcher. The ball travels at the same speed when it leaves the bat regardless of which ball is used but the distance it travels is increased by less wind resistance on the ball. In the case of the pitcher t's pretty safe to assume that the ball is going to be traveling at about the same speed for the first 60'6" - which is the distance the pitcher is throwing the ball. If the ball is traveling at the same speed but has more revs the break is going to be greater. It looks like we both have come to the same conclusion but got there different ways.
  9. I didn't say I condone it. I just said it's something I'm aware of.
  10. I know a HS coach who has two boxes of 'special' baseballs, one box with very high threads and the other with very tight threads. He tries to get the balls with the tight threads into the game when his team is behind and the one with the high threads in when his team is ahead. True story.
  11. I wish I'd said that. ^^^ :D
  12. ...but only by those people who do look at the game through analysts and statistics.
  13. It would have to be up to Harmony to do it because he's more "cerebral" than the rest of us.
  14. I'm blaming Porcillo's problems on two things, both of them related to the new baseballs. He's always given up a lot of HR's. It's just that last year's fly balls are becoming this year's home runs. and, perhaps more importantly... He's always been a breaking ball pitcher. With the "new and improved" baseballs being stitched tighter he has less stitch surface to grasp with his fingers. He can impart less spin on the ball and therefore his breaking pitches... his bread and butter pitches... are less effective.
  15. It's occurred to me as we dispute the value of WAR that the value of the very benchmark of WAR, the "Replacement Player", is determined by using.... wait for it... WAR! While it would seem logical to use the same formula for creating the benchmark as for rating players at the same time it guarantees the possibility of GIGO (Garbage in Garbage Out).
  16. There is a certain implication that when a player reaches the ML level he's a better player than someone who hasn't reached that level. IMHO JBJ is one of the premier defensive outfielders in baseball now. One would think that if there were AAAA players who are almost as good as he is that some team would have brought some of them up by now. Yet, JBJ is still seen as one of the premier outfielders in baseball. But the real issue here isn't JBJ. He's just the local poster child for the flaws in dWAR - and most of us agree that there are some. Once we agreed that there are some the only questions were how big those flaws are, how many of them are there, and how much they affect a player's "assigned" dWAR. I maintain they're significant. Other's think they're inconsequential.
  17. I'm not comparing them to the other 29 CF'ers. Like WAR does, I'm comparing him to the AAAA player.
  18. I have no problem with oWAR. It's dWAR I have an issue with. Unfortunately dWAR bleeds over into WAR. oWAR deals in reality. Numbers. percentages. dWAR deals with someone else's perception of what a player does. When I see a dWAR value that says that JBJ's only .2 WAR better than this mythical "replacement player" (as BR's dWAR does) I'm going to challenge the formula that created the value. Maybe, just maybe, dWAR is wrong.
  19. IMO there's not much doubt that the Sox will have to play better than they have been playing in order to get a WC spot. Call me an optimist but I think that will happen. I'lll tell you this about the 2019 Red Sox, If it happens The Red Sox are going to be the team that nobody wants to play in the playoffs.
  20. This argument works both ways, you know. Do you know that JBJ isn't better than other outfielders out there? Have you seen all of them play? Are you able to make an objective judgement based on what you've seen? I find it a little arrogant that some posters have completely bought into and defend WAR while ignoring what their eyes and logic tell them. Is it possible that Fangraphs is right when they indicate that there's a margin for error of ~16%?
  21. Did you happen to miss last year's Red Sox team, that one that won the WS and put up 119 wins? Unless of course you mean you haven't seen a Yankees team this good in over a decade. That would be more believable since the Y's haven't even been in the WS in almost a decade. The Yankees of 2019 happen to be in the right place at the right time. What with the juiced ball, the short porch in right, and the Y's loading up on LH power hitters they should be embarrassed if they don't win the WS this year.
  22. You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. I've had seasons when I watched every game, 2014 & 2015 come to mind immediately, but I've turned off some games this year. I cannot force myself to watch this much bad baseball. If there's one good thing to come out of this game it's that it proves why JDM should never be in the OF. He misplayed a ball that Mookie would have caught for fun into what was essentially an inside the park HR. It took JDM two misplays to do it, but he got it done!
  23. I'm the only one who's honest enough to admit it. The natural tendency is to believe something you can hang your hat on. When someone says, "I've got a six page formula that says that JBJ is only marginally better than a AAAA player and all you've got is your eyes"... what's the response to that? Doesn't it pretty much end the conversation? I feel badly for those people who have so little faith in their own judgement that they believe that JBJ is only marginally better defensively than that AAAA player.
