    I agree completely. It's only mid-July and a lot can happen in the next 2 months. Even if he makes NO moves we've still got one of the best offenses in baseball and a pitching staff that makes this team have the potential to not only make the playoffs but to make a real mark in the post-season.

    As a bit of an aside, what happened today is a downside to being at a game. The people in the stands usually don't know what's happening. I was at the famed "pizzagate day" at Fenway on the day when a fan threw a big piece of pizza at another fan. I was sitting in the g/s section looking down the 3B line and saw the pizza (or something white) thrown at another fan but didn't know the backstory until I got home.

    Ya. I suggested at one time that the crew chief should be mic'ed and I was vilified for it. The response I got was, "What's he going to say? Either he was safe or he was out." I still say there should be a mic on the crew chief, just for situations like this.

    I may have posted this before but Weaver was reputed to have memorized the entire rule book, chapter and verse, and could quote any part of it at any time. When asked why he went to the considerable trouble of being able to do that he replied, "Because being right isn't everything. Being able to prove it is."

    Has anyone else noticed that watching a baseball game is becoming more and more a bunch of commercials strung together by baseball? It's now come to the point where commercials are overlapping the game and we're sometimes seeing the first pitch of an inning (or after a timeout) on replay. Ugh

    That works if you've given up on this year and I'm not quite there yet. I'm not greedy. I don't need another WS Championship. I'm still holding out hope that the Sox can get one of the WC spots and then eliminate the Yankees in the Playoffs. Yeah, that would be a successful season.

    Really? A larger sample is better than a smaller sample? I didn't realize that. Probably because we Sox fans aren't as "cerebral" as you Mariners fans. The rest of that post sounds like conjecture to me....unless you have a link to it.

    The Yankees and Dodgers are doing exactly what MLB wants them do to, become mediocre, then rebuild. In fact, the same can be said about the Sox and the 'Stros. They were mediocre (or worse) got the draft pics, then rebuilt. By "mediocrity" I meant parity with the average of all teams being mediocre over a period of years. But you're much more "cerebral" than we Red Sox fans, so you already knew that.

    He would be a nice addition, and especially for your last reason - as insurance against Mookie leaving. However, We'd have to give something (someone) up to get him and I'd rather spend our resources on our weakest area - pitching.

    Then who is this "replacement player"? Does he have a name, because everyone he's being compared to does have a name. In reality the "replacement player" is a figment of the imagination created by using a formula that we all agree has flaws. Then those same flaws are used to establish the WAR of real players. Is it "pretty good"? Sure. It's pretty good at bunching players by WAR. It usually is reasonably accurate in establishing who's better than who when there are major differences but again, when I see a formula that tells me that JBJ is only .2 better than a AAAA player on defense I'm going to question it.

    Then you have to be happy with what's happening to the Red Sox. They spent big, won in '18, and now they're in 3rd place in their division because they're hamstrung with salary and drafting limits set by MLB to induce mediocrity.

    It appears to me that our position players (as a team) are as good as anyone in baseball and maybe better. Our problem is starting pitching, and even then it's not the entire staff. Selling off position players not only gives up on this year it gives up on next year too. As Kimmie says, either they find their stride or they don't but I wouldn't sell off our position players in exchange for other position players. It's very difficult to fill our needs by trading position players for established pitchers. Anyone who has established pitchers wants to keep them. I'd be looking to trade some of our "spare parts" (not named Brock Holt) looking for a gem of a AAA pitcher or someone who's underperforming for another team.

    That's the reason the Sox are where they are, 10 games back of the Yankees. To win the division a team has to beat the teams they can beat and be competitive with the other teams. The Sox aren't beating the teams they can beat.

    At the risk of criticizing our best pitcher at this time, but that's been the knock on ERod. He's lazy. He doesn't cover 1B and I can remember him not hustling to 2B when he was on base in a playoff game last year.

    The "opener" was an idea that was going to be seen as a horrible idea if it didn't work but is rationalized to death because it's frequently working.

    If ERod can hold this together this game should be in hand. However, if he falls apart and we go the pen all bets are off.
