The way the issue is framed I'm "meh" about who gets the money. It's just too much money, to begin with. My more specific grips is about how much money the fans "have to" spend to feed the egos and lifestyles of both the players and the owners. In my more perfect world the players and owners would make a fraction of what they make and the fans would be paying a fraction of what they're paying now.

I'm tired of being held hostage to Borass and Martinez. I'm about ready to gamble that the Sox are the only suitors and make a different offer. Tell Borass that our best offer today is 5/&125MM and you have 24 hours to make up your mind. Tomorrow at noon our best offer will be 5/120MM. We'll have to see what our best offer will be after 48 hours if you refuse these. If the Sox are the only suitor in this price range it may get JD moving, and if not we move on - which I'm nearly ready to do anyway.

I've done some negotiating for a living myself and one thing I learned early on is to give myself a LITTLE wiggle room. Right now that "wiggle room" appears to be almost the same amount as what the thus far negotiated offer is. Did Borass misjudge the market that much or did he intentionally mislead Martinez? Don't get me wrong, I do blame Martinez for this too, but when a person is paying someone for their advice the natural instinct is to believe that advice.

And such is life. I've bought cars and houses that I thought cost "too much" and I haven't gotten raises I thought I deserved because they were the best I could do. But I didn't grouse about it afterward and it never affected my work. If JD is expecting $200MM and the current offer is $125MM adding another $5MM or $10MM isn't going to appease him much. He's still going to be a long way from what he thinks he deserves - probably because Bora$$ told him he deserves that much. I'[m not at all sure that Martines hired Borass to give him unrealistic expectations.

Basic rule of thumb: It's like any negotiations. If you're not happy with it, don't sign it. My hope is that he doesn't sign it and grouse about it afterward. As Kimmie said, a big part of the issue may be that Bora$$ set JD's expectations too high. If so, that's on Bora$$ and JD needs to come to grips with it. If it were me I'd could come to grips pretty easily with $25MM/year for five years for playing baseball. Maybe a little less!

So the players are angry, huh? Angry that the owners aren't throwing MORE millions of dollars at them in an attempt to win them over. More and more i have no sympathy for either side. And BTW, will someone please take Pedro aside and break the news to him that protection in the BA doesn't exist? One would think that Pedro, as a pitcher who understood the ramifications of pitching to guys like Ortiz would understand that, but apparently he doesn't. We don't need guys like Pedro telling us anything when we have statistics! Sheesh.

Realizing that I'm a few hours behind in this discussion and hoping that this issue hasn't been beaten to death already.... I said back on the old BDC board that there are two ways to make money in Major League Baseball - by winning or by losing. If a team wins it puts fannies in the seats and sells merchandise. It allows $5 hot dogs and $10 beers. It builds a fan base that will pay to see every game on their local sports network. And it will allow for ever-escalating ticket prices. If a team loses it then cries about how it can't compete with other teams so those other teams subsidize the losing teams to be sure they also make money. IMO if anyone actually loses money owning a MLB team they have to be an idiot. Of course we have no way of knowing because they're all privately owned and therefore have no obligation to reveal their earnings statement. I've wondered for some time if there's be any sympathy for any owners if we knew exactly what their financial situation is. Convenient, huh?

Here's word of warning if anyone is planning to do visit JetBlue Park for the workouts now though. Get there early.... but not too early. During the last week of workouts the players don't show up until after 9:00 am and they're done by noon. They all have early afternoon tee-times.

My son attended one of those D3 schools about 20 years ago. Tuition, room & board there is now ~$63,000/year. One would think that admission, parking and free seats for parents (Hell, the whole damn family!!) would be included in that $63,000, wouldn't you?

I agree completely with what you say. For the past few years I've made a point of arriving before the games start and going to the field to watch the workouts and I've now come to enjoy the workouts almost as much as the games. And the best part is that it's free! :-) I do have to wonder though how long it will be before the Sox charge for parking on those days. :-(

I agree, but I don't know what it will take to stop it. I see overspending on talent being much like spending big money on PED abusers. The owners don't like signing those guys but they know if they don't sign them some other owner will. So the cycle goes on...and on.. and on. Just from a curiosity standpoint I would like to know how much money these teams make (or lose) in a year after all the revenue is in and all the bills are paid. I have a sense that's why they're privately owned - so they don't have to reveal that stuff to their shareholders. But.... I've been accused of being unduly cynical too.

Yeah. We all know that lawyers are much to professional to do anything like that. I don't know if you read your own links or not but... Yeah. That's professional.

I've often thought that negotiations for contract extensions between teams and players - as well as arbitration cases- "poison the well" between teams and players. They create hard feelings that wouldn't otherwise exist. Now I'm feeling the same way about Free Agent holdouts.

Thoughts? I'll always take the field over any one team in a bet. It's a sucker's bet not to. I'll lose once in a while (Alabama, anyone? ) but I'll win more often than I'll lose.

There was rampant speculation here that the Sox would have nothing to do with Wright in the future because of this incident. When I posted that I was thinking more of the Red Sox when I said "All is forgiven".
