  1. I agree completely with everything you say. I'm just reminding folks that it's a little early to be printing World Series tickets.
  2. I appreciate your...er... concern but it could appear to the cynical that you as a Yankee fan would like nothing better than to see a hot Hanley on the bench. To answer the question, to me having Hanley playing a full year is worth losing either Kimbrel or Pom if it means winning a WS. Unfortunately we won't know until October is over whether things worked out that way. In the meantime I'm willing to give this team the best chance they have to win a ring even if it means weakening the 2019 team. You take your opportunities when they come. Just ask the Nats and Strasburg.
  3. Eight games into the season is too early to draw any conclusions about what it means for the rest of the season. Maybe the Sox aren't going to be a good hitting team but OTOH maybe the reason the Sox haven't scored more runs is because they've faced some good pitching. Maybe the Sox are 7-1 because they have good pitching or OTOH maybe it's because the teams they've been playing can't hit. These things are going to shake out when the Sox and the Rays start playing other teams. Don't get me wrong. I think the Sox are appreciably better than the Rays. I just don't think we should be assuming that just because they're better than the Rays they're also better than many other teams.
  4. It depends on who the pitcher is. Chris Sale's goal is usually to strike out the hitter but Porcillo's goal is to try to make the batter hit the pitch Porcillo wants him to hit and not the one the batter wants to hit. There's a lot of research done on where a batter's "hot zone" is as well as where the part of the strike zone is that the batter makes a lot of outs. Pitchers will try to put the hitter in a position where they're getting a "bad (for the hitter) strike to hit.
  5. But you also have to take into consideration that in order to move Beni to CF we'd have to put someone in LF who isn't as strong defensively as Beni is there.. In essence it weakens the defense in two positions in order to gain offense in one position.
  6. I don't agree that Moreland "deserves" anything beyond collecting his $6.5M this year and next. He's signed to be a part of the team, probably to play some 1B and do some hitting when the manager says to. If Hanley keeps hitting like he has been - or anywhere near that - Hanley is the one who deserves to play.
  7. Something I think we learned during the Victorino days is how important it is to have someone with the skills to play CF in both CF & RF for 81 games. Benintendi may be wasted in LF in Fenway but having his skills in LF for the remaining 81 games is a big plus. Putting Swihart or Nunez into that outfield will weaken the outfield defense tremendously. Does anyone really think that what we'd gain in OPS from Swihart and Nunez over JBJ would offset what we'd lose in defense if they replaced JBJ out there? I think (and hope) that JBJ is around for a long time because he simply doesn't have the offensive numbers to command a Boras type contract. I believe that when the time comes the Sox will sign him for a reasonable amount of money.
  8. The window is there and it is what it is. IMO we need to worry about winning THIS YEAR and let next year take care of itself. If that means Hanley having a great year and vesting, so be it. I refuse to get so wrapped up in Hanley's not vesting that we forego a solid playoff run to keep it from happening.
  9. You can say all you want about the Sox being 6-1 but not having played any "good" teams, and you may be right. However, you have to play the teams on the schedule, and I'm a lot happier with the Sox being 6-1 against weak teams than I would be if they were 1-6 against those same teams.
  10. I think this team needs for Hanley to have a good year in order to get to the WS. We need back-to-back punch in the middle of the order. It looks/sounds like some posters are so obsessed with Hanley's not vesting that the forget that 2018 is a part of our window. My hope is that Hanley posts an OPS of ~850-.900 and leads the team through the WS even if it means he vests and then struggles in 2019.
  11. O.k. Would you trade that for a World Series Championship in 2018?
  12. One of the prime requisites for a reliever is that THEY DON'T WALK PEOPLE!!!
  13. 20-20 hindsight. Always perfect.
  14. The parallel question is are you sure he did talk to Betts before he made the decision? We don't know what "maybe" happened. All we know is what did happen. Any manager I had made the decisions without getting permission from his employees. But "maybe" Cora does have to ask permission from his players prior to giving them the day off.
  15. It's good to have you back. I've missed your clear and insightful posts.
  16. I agree, and I have the same concerns about both the offense and the pitching/defense. The interesting thing about the schedule is that you have to play the teams as they're presented to you. Let's just say that I'm much more optimistic now than I would have been if they'd gone 1-3. ☺
  17. Check your PM's. Other posters probably don't want to read our drivel.
  18. Wednesday. Ugh. I think you missed the best weather - it's here now. And BTW, thanks for the good company. I'd watch a game with you anytime! I'm hearing that nearly all of the snow has melted in coastal Maine and temps are above freezing every day now. Hey, we take our blessings as we find them. Assuming most everyone will be reading this, I'd like to put together a meeting of Talk Sox folks at a Sea Dogs game this summer so please be thinking about a date if you're at all interested. I'll post something in the Tickets, etc.thread later in the season
  19. I agree with this, but at the same time we can't go around saying it's not as important as 'most people' think it is because we don't know.
  20. Besides, Vaz had been hitting the ball well all day. He just had the misfortune of hitting it right at someone.
  21. It's amazing how results-oriented we are. I've always liked Kelly, mostly because of his velocity, but his performance thus far in 2018 has him starting to wear out his welcome with me. And I know, SSS, but still... Frankly, Kelly did puke all over himself yesterday, he just got away with it. As the closer he gave up 2 hits and got Gomez (?) to swing at a ball four that would have loaded the bases. It's one of those situations where the box score doesn't describe how (in)effective he was. The fact that he escaped doesn't give me any faith in him going down the road.
  22. Have they put down new turf there within the past few years? It doesn't look blue any more.
  23. "....who believes their observations are the end all be all."
  24. Essentially untreatable. The premise is that the batting order makes no difference. Therefore players will perform the same whetever they are in the order. The obvious argument is that it does make a difference and that players will perform differently. And that's a position that's been upheld my several (most?) MLB players. One cannot take a batting order that's prepared to maximize run production and compare it to another batting order that's constructed to maximize run production and then use one of them as a baseline for comparison. The only fair comparison would be against a random order not constructed to maximize run comparison. I hesitate to use the word 'never' but I strongly doubt that thete have been a significant number of times when a manager has constructed a lineup without trying to maximixmze run production.
