  1. Will someone PLEASE sign Hosmer, before the Sox do??!!
  2. You're not helping build a case for WAR, you know.
  3. So would I, if I had the skills. So far I haven't seen any indication that he can do anything at the ML level other than catch.
  4. I still don't see Swihart as anything but a catcher but you may be right. It'll all depend on whether they try him at other positions in ST and how that pans out. I like Swihart because of his bat and it'd be nice to have a #3 catcher who can play other positions as well as be competent if/when an injury occurs to Vaz or Leon.
  5. Some GM's are more defense oriented than others. DD tried (unsuccessfully) to trade for JBJ and (successfully) trade for Iglesias - both players who are stronger defensively than offensively - when he was in Detroit. It may be that GM's with a like mind of DD feel that JBJ is untouchable in Boston so they don't even bother to make an offer. I know that I'm a dinosaur in that I value defense as highly as offense and I'd like to see JBJ in CF for the foreseeable future, but that's just me.
  6. Being reflective for a moment..... We're so spoiled. Every winter we go through the same process/mindset of what it will take to push us over the top. I sometimes have to wonder what it's like for fans of teams who see the Hot Stove time as a time to watch their good players get traded away for prospects - essentially throwing in the towel for the upcoming season and trying to build for the future. That's gotta suck. Can the argument be made that due to their financial constraints some teams are nothing more than a feeder program for the teams with a big revenue stream?
  7. I'd like to think that moving JBJ was contingent on acquiring either Ozuna or Stanton.
  8. Did I misunderstand this? If Swihart and Marrero are allowed to fight it out for a utility role that fight will be over before the opening bell. Marrero can play any infield position while Swihart hasn't proven he can do anything other than catch.
  9. To paraphrase Moon, *If we sign *Machado* I'm going to puke,"
  10. No thanks. I like signing Martinez as much as any option we have but I don't want to weaken the biggest strength the Sox have in their outfield. I also think you're being optimistic if you think any team (other than the Yankees) is now going to bite on Wright this winter.
  11. IIRC the NCAA went to that flatter seamed ball in an attempt to negate the effect the "BBCor" bats had on the flight distance of the ball and it worked. The flatter seams mean less wind resistance while the ball is in flight and at the same time maintaining the slower exit speed off the bat. Maybe MLB has caught on and they're using the same ball but with the wooden bats.
  12. Again going back to my recent experience with the Sox announcers, they were asked whether the ball is juiced. Dave O'Brian said there's no doubt in his mind the ball is "different than it used to be". According to O'B, MLB uses a different ball for the Home Run Derby than they do for games (no surprise) and "I wonder if they used the same balls for the World Series". I got the feeling he wasn't completely serious about that, but still.... He also said, "When Justin Verlander says that the balls are a little smaller and feel a little harder there's something going on".
  13. How could you POSSIBLY infer that Harmony had meant something other than that? LOL
  14. And to play Devil's Advocate, that may be why he didn't want the 911 call to happen, and things escalated from there.
  15. You and I need to share a table with a couple of beers on it sometime. I get the impression we agree on a lot of things.
  16. You're right. It was not you. I was in a reflective mood at the time of the post, disappointed over the hostile tenor that had taken over this forum. The "mistake" I made was attaching a timeline to it. I learned. But what is good for me is also good for the person who admonished me.
  17. Hey, I'm not dragging politics into this! A week ago I mentioned something about how the general tenor of discussion in this country had declined in the past year and I was severely admonished for it!
  18. We all know who coined the phrase "Fake News". Please leave politics out of this forum. Thanks.
  19. If you want to deny that we had a discussion about DD saying that no players were going to require surgery in this off season, and then two of them (ERod & Hanley) promptly did have surgery, have at it. I have more to do with my time than search through thousands of posts trying to find it. Have a wonderful day.
  20. Aw, c'mon. We had a lengthy discussion about DD's saying that no Red Sox players were going to need surgery right after the season ended.
  21. This may be unduly optimistic, but since Hanley has had his "phantom" shoulder surgery - the one DD said wasn't going to happen - is it too optimistic to think that the 2018 version of Hanley might resemble the 2016 version when he played 130 games at 1B and had a WAR of 2.8?
  22. It's difficult because I've seen Kiermieyer and Pillar make some very good catches but I don't get to see them every day. The thing that JBJ does that I've never seen anyone else do is turn his back on the ball, run to 'the spot' and be waiting for the ball when it comes down. That alone tells me that he may cover more ground in CF than any of the other four. Or maybe he's just lazy and sprints to 'the spot' so he can take a little break before the ball comes down.
  23. Gimmee a break here, will ya? I'm trying to put the best possible spin on this!!
  24. I think that's the case with most of us. There aren't enough hours in the day to watch the Sox AND every other team and I've already admitted to my 'man crush' on JBJ. That's why I'll defer to you and revise my thinking to say that "Since the other four aren't available I like JBJ in CF for the Sox".
  25. Sometimes the fairest way to look at things is in retrospect, and in retrospect while we were gloating about the Yankees not winning he AL East since 2012 they were rebuilding while remaining largely competitive with 3 second place finishes in those 5 years. Every dog has his day, and through good management and some surprising good luck they've set themselves up for a few years now. However, it's early for them to be dusting off spots in the trophy case for the WS hardware yet. They still have issues to address, the biggest one being pitching.
