It's not common or a big deal. If Buchholz insists on it, he still has to earn the spot over other pitchers. Not sure why people think a minor league deal means a mandatory appearance. If you think the Sox should be compelled to call him up just because, then we have the wrong idiot at GM..

A minor league contract doesn't guarantee a roster spot. Just a tryout for one...

It's not a typical clause and players who do have one seem to get released about half the time. Really this is all anti-Buchholz stuff. Were it another pitcher or a pitcher who showed flashes but was injured on another team, most would be saying "Minor league deal? Sure. There's no risk." But instead we have people speculating about his health. And one guy who thinks Buchholz on a minor league deal is bad, but the oft-injured but successful when healthy Alex Cobb is a good idea...

Duda or Morrison. I like Morrison better but both are really crapshoots. If this off-season has shown anything in a way of trends, the most overpaid from that bunch might be Watson...

I like the "multiple role player" approach. The core of this team is Bradley-Betts-Benintendi-Bogaerts for non-pitchers. I get the appeal of Martinez, but he is a threat to that. Another name worth mentioning as a role player might be Brandon Phillips. Grab him, Morrison, Cashner and a reliever like Tony Watson, Matt Belisle or, if you feel like a reclamation project, Trevor Rosenthal...

If we miss Martinez, who else left qualifies as significant? Hosmer? Morrison? Duda? There are pros and cons to each of them, and primary con for each is that there is a good chance they are not significant..

I hope not. The Sox season ended 114 days ago and so far his most significant addition to the entire organization has been Esteban Quiroz.

The point was out was eadily toppable by one of the worst fans in baseball. The Marlins panicked. All Stanton wanted was to go to a winning team - his for choices were LCS participants from the year before. By July 31st this year, other teams were very likely to emerge as options. Or injuries might have made one of those four teams more interested. But for some reason the Marlins thought it imperative to move that contract NOW and take a cheap package. Stanton's contract and age are really not all that daunting., especially compared to what players are holding out for today. ..

It'd the Sox sign Martinez, it significantly reduces the chances of Hanley's option vesting. There are only so many places in the lineup. It would take a major injury for Hanley to play enough. And that injury might have to be to Martinez. In fact if the Sox sign Martinez, they might DFA Hanley. That eliminates the chances of his option vesting. ..
