  1. Of the pitchers traded to get Pedro and Schill- Pavano and Fossum were Sox draft picks, not de la Rosa or Armas.
  2. "Since Lester and Buch"-- Buch was drafted in '05!! Every other Sox issue pales in comparison.
  3. Verdugo benched for being late, "character issues" go way back. This is from a LAD site in 2019- "Of course, there have been intermittent reports of his lack of professionalism and poor attitude since his initial call to the bigs back in 2017. On occasion, he’s even been late, a circumstance the team believed it nipped in the bud two seasons ago. If his professionalism is indeed bad enough to keep him relegated to the pine, one would think that the organization would have pulled the trigger on one of the many blockbuster trade opportunities the team was supposedly presented with over the past few years. When rival clubs engage in trade talks with the Dodgers, Verdugo’s name is normally one of the first to surface".
  4. I'd do the same if I was Henry, but I am worried about getting an OF who is known for a lack of effort. Big problem in Boston. Mookie wanted 12/400 supposedly. No thanks. We got to see a generational player in his prime. I'll take that. A 2020 title looked unlikely w Mookie anyway. The biggest issue remains. The procurement and development of pitching needs addressing. This issue directly caused many of the poor decisions management has made. Is it always wise to pay for an expensive superstar..harper, trout, pujols, mookie. One knee, shoulder, or wrist injury away from mediocrity? Not to mention father time.
  5. Hey Harm, Here is one for you. Higher career fWAR? WMB 1.0, Ryan Lavarnway -1.4, Jesus Montero -2.4 JM bashed in his first call up. Few predicted his career path.
  6. On the June 4th Royals game every Sox position player (except Holt's 24 games w the Pirates), was home grown. When was the last time every Sox player fielded was home grown? Pretty rare I'd guess. Maybe a late season game?
  7. First name that came to my mind, Stanley. John Valentin had a very high peak, compared to his fanfare.
  8. Thanks Hitch. I am in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. I had some late nights this post-season.
  9. DD was wise to go all in this year. He made some great moves which were augmented by some good fortune. Only the Nats and Sox were over the tax this year. I suspect 2018 will look like a rare year that the NYY and LAD put dollars over rings. Their fiscal choices were multifactorial, and great for the Sox. Great time for DD to pounce. The $250m 2019 NYY will be a much harder foe. Another bit of luck was that JD had no other destination. Hence the below expectations contract. DD is a Sox legend now for life, and deserves massive plaudits. That said a bit of good fortune never hurts. I
  10. Congrats to DD. Price and Pearce's WS assures his legacy. My order of credit for current success: 1. Henry- £240 payroll. Supporting the core w Price and JD, when Hal went under the cap. The window of opportunity was taken. 2a. Theo- he drafted the killer B core. 2b. DD- many of his big moves have come good. I thot Price was a bad one. 4. Ben. Don't forget him, he made some awful moves but he played a decent part of the build up to this ring. He drafted / signed the prized chips which netted the best pitcher in MLB. He also kept the right core players when they were prospects.
  11. Sox match up better w Brewers: 2018 Sox OPS vs LHP .719 LH Starters: Kershaw, Ryu, and Hill, vs. only Miley. Brewer pitchers bring the heat, Sox best in bigs hitting fastballs.
  12. Nunes faced one strike and three balls way outside! Arrghhh
  13. Cashman not trading for Verlander last year looks bad in retrospect. Houston gave up their 3rd 9th and 11th prospects.
  14. Informative article on how JD has worked w Mookie on his swing. http://amp.si.com/mlb/2018/08/08/jd-martinez-boston-red-sox-houston-astros-astroball
  15. JD was unlucky that there was only one big payroll suitor. The Sox were bidding against themselves. Most other years he'd have banked way more guaranteed dollars. We lucked out.
  16. Jed is an above average second baseman, who was blocked by the great Dustin. Therefore he can't be the one who got away. His injuries have been freaky and playing through an early career misdiagnosed (The Bosox med staff had some howlers back then) wrist injury hurt his numbers. He has started many years of his career by putting up stellar numbers, before injury derailed him. (see article below) Softlaw is rolling in his crypt seeing "liberal no pop" Jed put up a 2017/18 wRC+ 126 (btwn Dozier and Encarnacion). Brock Holt 29 yo It is good see Jed have a strong swan song, he must think what might have been. https://www.athleticsnation.com/2018/4/9/17210466/jed-lowrie-oakland-as-disabled-list-what-could-have-been
  17. All interesting things in life are multifactorial!! What Boras said. “I think we’ve got a lot of excuse-making,’’ Boras said. “We have a lot of reasons for non-competitiveness. And the reason for it is they’re suggesting some reward (high draft picks). Our system is upside-down, because we never, ever want to reward non-competitiveness. It is a cancer. It damages the brand of baseball.’’ Some factors: -the Cubs / Astros blueprint (Padres are trying). -post steroid FA hitters losing effectiveness earlier, and other reasons for so many big contract FA busts. -owner collusion -team use of stats / analytics -younger players are outperforming older players more than before https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/baseballs-kids-are-all-right/
  18. You were right on Middlebrooks Crazy: No homegrown Sox starter (except Clay and Jon) has logged more than 450 career innings since 2006.
  19. A lot of FO mistakes stem from this!!
  20. Astros are the better team, and played better on the day. A good team lost to a very good team. Mookie lets the ball get past for a triple. JBJ in the ninth one run down gets a pitch right in his wheelhouse,,, and .... fouls it off. Compare how Reddick and Beltran had great at bats and went other way in huge spot, with JBJ and Pedroia (ump blew a couple strikes) don't capitalize w bags full and no outs!! 37 pitches and only 3 swing and misses for Kimbrel!! Give credit to a GREAT hitting team
  21. Somewhere in a crypt in NC, Softlaw is getting tired of rolling over every time no-pop Lowrie has hit one of his 43 doubles. The biggest surprise of those mentioned has to be Reddick. He has put up 17 WAR in his 6 seasons since leaving. Lackey and Lester have both aged well. CC and Ellsbury did not live up to what Dave Cameron wrote about speed players ageing well.
  22. Who would have thought 5 or 6 years ago when they left, that Reddick and Lowrie would still be playing in 2017, both have a higher OPS than any qualified Bosox, and the Red Sox would be in first place?
  23. It is hard to say if a homegrown player or DD is keen to sign a longterm deal "early" (Pedroia, Longoria, ...). I'm thinking right now JBJ, Betts, and especially Bog have lost some bargaining power with declines in production. compared to other times in their careers. They might regret not inking deals in the past.
  24. Henry's pick of Price over Lester aint looking great right now.
  25. Agreed! He must of bought the chicken and beer to get the praise of teammates, because on the field he showed up others often. Plus he was a sore loser, for example ripping Pedey's "barely enough" homer off him in the PO.
