  1. Ah, the first of 19 Orioles games which will be inexplicably blacked out for me here (Raleigh)...yipee.
  2. What's taters, precious?
  3. I remember when people started getting annoyed that we had to keep Mirabelli around as Wakefield's personal catcher for all those years...now, are we really supposed to believe that our entire starting five are pitching like overmatched minor leaguers because of the loss of the great Sandy Leon? Not to minimize his skills in any way, but that seems insane to me. (Btw, maybe this has been answered already, but why is it the relievers can pitch to Vazquez/Swihart successfully, but not the starters...?)
  4. Leonroof? Restroof?
  5. Red Sox ace Chris Sale was sick between his first and second starts of the 2019 season, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Tuesday. It likely contributed to a decrease in velocity because of limited preparation before his start in Oakland last Wednesday. https://www.masslive.com/sports/2019/04/chris-sale-sick-boston-red-sox-starter-was-ill-between-first-and-second-start-likely-contributed-to-dip-in-velocity.html
  6. Didn't see it mentioned, but Scherff also had an impressive season debut on Thursday (5 scoreless innings, 2 hits, 1 BB, 4K, reportedly up to 97 on the fastball).
  7. Given all the team has done the last year or two to try to protect Sale's arm and keep him healthy and fresh for October, I'm surprised anyone thinks they would run him out there (in April, no less) knowing he's injured. Not to mention the fact that he had to pass a physical just a couple of weeks ago to finalize his big extension. I'm sure they believe he's physically fine...I just hope they're right.
  8. I still catch a whiff of this sentiment now and then (which, now close to three years since we migrated here, is kind of puzzling), and it's one reason I don't post nearly as much as I otherwise might.
  9. D'oh...yes, you're absolutely right. Nevermind.
  10. Lots of older and/or less talented relievers had no trouble landing multi-year deals this winter...I find it hard to believe the QO is the only offer he's turned down.
  11. Kind of surprising, with all of the concerns about going over the third tax level, that they're going to eat the $2.5 million when they did not have to (assuming the above is correct)...that could be money for a July trade acquisition.
  12. I found this... (I'm learning or re-learning a lot about the waiver processes the last day or two ) The Red Sox could have placed Leon on unconditional release waivers, which would have prevented his contract from counting towards the CBT because it’s a non-guaranteed contract until Opening Day. They instead placed him on outright waivers. Unconditionally releasing Leon would have given the Red Sox $2.475 million more in CBT flexibility this regular season as they look to avoid the third threshold. But the Red Sox obviously feel keeping Leon as depth in the organization is more important. https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2019/03/sandy-leons-2475m-boston-red-sox-salary-to-count-towards-cbt-if-he-accepts-outright-to-pawtucket-despite-non-guaranteed-contract.html
  13. Yeah, I think Vazquez can be Leon's equal (or close) as defensive whiz and pitcher whisperer, while offering more upside with the bat. I'm okay with this move, and even more okay with it if Leon clears waivers and can be stashed in Pawtucket to preserve depth.
  14. Poyner, Walden, and Hernandez optioned to the minors; Brewer looks likely for the last bullpen spot, with Mejia also still in the running. https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2019/03/boston-red-sox-roster-moves-prospect-darwinzon-hernandez-optioned-to-portland-bobby-poyner-marcus-walden-optioned-to-pawtucket.html
  15. Okay...? You seem like you're really looking for reasons to get pissed off in this thread...I wonder why.
  16. Were either of these statements ever in dispute?
  17. The post where it was posited that one of Johnson, Hernandez, Houck, or Shawaryn could become a solid, cost-controlled starter? That may be a slightly rose-colored view, but I don't see it as rampant homerism by any means. If Brian Johnson potentially being our #5 starter is the biggest problem we have to worry about next year, I'll be pretty content.
  18. A possible solution to the catcher quandry? https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/redsox/2019/03/22/red-sox-catcher-situation-remains-flux/iVsnFDeNin7SAuF3OPvBdI/story.html
  19. This makes the tax issue a lot clearer, I think: https://www.masslive.com/sports/2019/03/chris-sale-contract-extension-boston-red-sox-aces-30-million-average-annual-value-to-count-against-cbt-beginning-in-2020.html
  20. Speak of the devil... http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/26334586/mariners-prospect-filia-suspended-100-games
  21. Wow...VERY reasonable deal for us if this is true.
  22. More from that story: "Two other sources said the Red Sox have made several attempts at a long-term deal with Betts, including this past offseason, with the Betts camp not even making a counter-proposal." https://nypost.com/2019/03/19/mookie-betts-rejecting-red-sox-looks-more-lucrative-by-the-second/ I wonder what numbers were discussed this offseason... It sure seems like he is heading to free agency unless we blow him out of the water with an offer at this point.
  23. I won't lie, the prioritizing of saving tax dollars over building a strong bullpen (which would be the finishing touch on what might otherwise be the most complete and talented roster in the league) caught me by surprise and might be the most befuddling decision I can remember by the team in quite a while. I'm hoping for the best with the guys we have (no other choice, is there?), and perhaps by October all these worries will be long forgotten, but right now our pen appears to be running on a lot of hopes and dreams. I hope I'm wrong.
