  1. Meh. I wonder what his official role will be...likely something like Allard Baird and Frank Wren, where he advises behind the scenes but we never hear much about him, right?
  2. Yeah, I've been saying all along that I don't think the Marlins will be able to get the sort of spectacular package many seem to be assuming they will. Of course it's not a "salary dump" per se, but it seems like getting rid of the salary will be the primary objective, and I'm skeptical that any team will take on all of the money and surrender elite prospects and/or young MLB players. But time will tell, of course.
  3. Hey man, don't bring Kimmi's elk into this.
  4. I don't know how this turned into the umpteenth rehashing of Cherington, Dombrowski, and their various deals and decisions...but anyways... https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/10/marlins-hope-to-trade-stanton-gordon-prado.html The most interesting nugget here, I thought, is the speculation that "the team’s reported intentions perhaps hint that the focus could be on moving all of Stanton’s salary rather than maximizing the prospect return." Daunting though Stanton's contract may appear, I'd take it on in a moment if we didn't have to empty what's left of the farm and/or pillage key pieces from the major league roster to get him. The cost in talent will make all the difference...we'll see...
  5. I guess this WS is chock full of chockers.
  6. I can well believe that some guys may be better able to handle pressure situations than others, but I also believe that fans are often too quick to slap a label on a player based on small and ultimately meaningless sample sizes. A handful of innings or plate appearances spread out over multiple seasons doesn't really tell me a whole lot. If Pablo Sandoval qualifies as a "clutch" player because he had some great postseasons in San Francisco, then it's a pretty useless distinction.
  7. Basically, according to this argument, Altuve was better, but Judge's teammates weren't as good as Altuve's, therefore Judge should win? Seems a ridiculous way to judge an individual award. I'd just as soon see it go to the best overall player and call it a day, but that's just me.
  8. If you're just looking at Hosmer's 2017 season and believe that's who he is going forward, then sure (though even then, the difference was a significant but not earth-shattering 4.0 vs 2.0 in bWAR)...but year-to-year consistency has not been his strong suit. In 2016, Hosmer was worth 1.0 bWAR and Moreland 0.7. Again, not saying Hosmer isn't better, but if it's a choice between spending $5-10 million on Moreland and committing probably ten times that to Hosmer, I'd pick the former (ideally in conjunction with signing another bat like Martinez) and use the difference in other areas.
  9. I'm not necessarily anti-Hosmer, but I think there are better options. I don't think the difference between him and, say, Moreland is as great as the difference in the contracts they'll get will be.
  10. I'd be happy with him if we don't sign Martinez.
  11. Good to see you around, Sheriff.
  12. Agree. I don't see us landing either one.
  13. It's official: http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2017/10/alex_cora_officially_named_new.html Hopefully someone told him about the'"cliff" before he accepted the job through 2020, lol.
  14. Butterfinger must go, to be sure.
  15. Yeah, this thread title is just a bit premature still, as nothing has officially been announced or even definitively reported yet...though it looks pretty certain to be Cora at this point. Dombrowski said yesterday that no decision had been made, but I'm guessing that's about as solid as when there were no Sox players having offseason surgery.
  16. Agree. And while I like Chili Davis, I think it's a good time for a fresh approach this winter after watching virtually all of our young players aside from Vazquez and Devers underperform relative to expectations. It will be interesting to see who the new manager (presumably Cora at this point) brings with him to the coaching staff.
  17. Bogaerts hit .304/.338/.411 in the 1st half of 2015 and .337/.372/.431 in the 2nd half (which shatters the notion that he's somehow predestined to drop off later in the season), so I don't get this comment. Did you mean 2016? Anyway, I'm done defending Xander's honor for now. Happy Friday, peeps.
  18. I'm not in any rush to give up on Bogaerts at this point, anyway. Yes, he's inconsistent and frustrating as hell, and he may never quite be what we thought he'd be in 2013, but he's had half-season stretches where he looks like a future batting champ and possesses raw power that remains mostly untapped (he did hit 21 HR as recently as a year ago). It's easy to forget how young he still is, having just turned 25 this month. That's not to say I wouldn't consider any deal for him, but I think if you traded him this winter you'd likely be selling low. (Same with JBJ, to a lesser extent.)
  19. Would he, though? This is the problem I have with most of these Stanton trade ideas...you'd be getting a big upgrade in one area but tearing open a hole in another (in this case, swapping a two-time Silver Slugger for a .200 hitter). You can't convince me we're a better team with Stanton and Marrero than with Martinez and Bogaerts.
  20. All the people who used to complain about "Francoma" will have an easy job...all you have to do is change one letter.
  21. I give this my all-important seal of approval.
  22. Who's playing SS?
  23. Honestly, I'm having a hard time seeing why we'd chase Stanton when JDM is available for just money (and a lot less of it).
  24. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/10/eduardo-rodriguez-undergoes-knee-surgery.html Add at least one more starter to the offseason to-do list.
  25. I never bought that report, and still don't. If anything, we didn't make a major trade because there wasn't a good one to be had and/or because the luxury tax prevented it, not because after trading Moncada, Kopech, Espinoza, Margot, etc. JH suddenly decided the likes of Groome, Chavis, and Mata were untouchable.
