  1. Seems like teams are being informed whether or not they'll get an in-person meeting...in our case, Dombrowski confirmed the Red Sox had been told they were out of the running. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/mariners-giants-will-meet-with-shohei-ohtani-yankees-out-of-the-running.html
  2. Pete Abraham reporting the Red Sox are out of the Ohtani sweepstakes.
  3. Pete Abraham @PeteAbe The Red Sox also are out on Ohtani. Dave Dombrowski said they were informed this afternoon. 6:22 PM · Dec 3, 2017 Oh well...didn't think we had a great shot anyway. I like how fast he seems to be moving (a first this winter), though.
  4. That brings a smile to my face.
  5. Feels like this writing has been on the wall for a little while now. At least I can be glad that it looks like he's staying out of the AL, and hopeful that his eventual decision will help set some other moves in motion...
  6. Jon Morosi @jonmorosi Sources: #Marlins have agreed to general framework of Giancarlo Stanton trades with both #STLCards and #SFGiants; the deals are on hold, while Marlins wait for Stanton to inform them whether he’d accept either trade. @MLB @MLBNetwork 2:47 PM · Dec 3, 2017
  7. I hope you're right!
  8. Assuming we don't extend any of our current players, don't make any new signings or trades, and do nothing to improve the current state of the farm system between now and 2020ish, then yeah, the following years are going to be pretty bleak...but surely no one believes that's going to happen. That our farm is much weaker than it was a couple of years ago, and that almost our entire MLB team will be set to hit free agency within 2-3 years of each other, is disputed by no one, but the "cliff" theory seems to assume that the Red Sox will do nothing in the face of this and will have no choice but to rebuild, which I heartily disagree with. As I've said before, if this is a bad team in 2021 or whatever, it will be because we didn't play our cards right between now and then (which could be said of any organization!), not because it was somehow predetermined by moves that have already been made.
  9. Well, it was a good thread while it lasted.
  10. I like Abreu a lot, but I imagine the White Sox will want a nice haul and there are a lot of first basemen out there who will cost only money. We'll see...
  11. For the record, I don't either - just wanted to cram a few bad shooting jokes into one post.
  12. There's a lot of gossip and rumor out there regarding Stanton, but I'm not sure how much of it should really be considered credible until we get some hard information. There's nothing wrong with him preferring the west coast, but he can't make the Dodgers take on his contract or give the Marlins the players they want, either. If this is a situation where he's never going to accept a trade to Boston no matter what, hopefully Dombrowski can determine this quickly and move on without wasting his time further, but I'm not convinced that is the case...Stanton has to know that he doesn't have that many realistic landing spots to begin with, and IMO he'd be daft to block a trade to a legitimate contender and risk being stuck in Miami.
  13. I don't get these repeated digs at posters who talk about the payroll....while I think all of us would be happy with the Red Sox spending $400 million per year, the fact is that there is a finite amount the club is willing/able to spend each season whether we like it or not, meaning $20 million blown on a Pablo Sandoval equals less of the pie left to allocate to other needs. People talk about the budget and the luxury tax because they acknowledge this reality, not because they want the Red Sox to be cheap or they're concerned about saving John Henry money.
  14. Gun to my head, I'd definitely say Brentz makes the 25-man roster to start next season. His 2017 performance showed he still has a few rounds left in the chamber, and one might even say Dombrowski shot himself in the foot by not calling him up in September...or perhaps Farrell was the one calling the shots on that one, and that decision may have helped put him in the line of fire. Who knows.
  15. I agree the subject isn't going to go away (nor should it, as it's a legitimate topic for discussion) - it's more a matter of there being nothing new to say about it at this point that hasn't been said over and over already. In a few weeks we should have some more sexy DD action to talk about, and next year will bring further evidence of whether his moves are or are not working out, but right now all we can do is rehash old arguments...
  16. Maybe the Marlins will finally trade Stanton somewhere soon and save us from the 9,238th comparing/contrasting of Ben and Dave and rehashing of all of their respective decisions and transactions.
  17. Jokes aside, turning Elias and/or Johnson into a serviceable LH reliever (as Dave recently hinted at) would be pretty huge. We went through most of last year with Robby Scott and Fernando Abad on the roster, so it's not like there isn't room for improvement.
  18. Yeah, that sounds good, man that Travis Shaw sure is a useful guy to have around - WAIT, f***.
  19. The better question is, what is the case against signing him? I don't really see one, unless you think he's not going to be that good a major league hitter and his presumed requirement to be allowed to hit is going to f*** up your roster construction. Doesn't sound like we have the bonus pool space left to make it happen, though. Yes, he's already foregoing a huge sum by coming over now rather than in a couple of years, but the difference between $3-4 million and the approximately $400k we have to offer is still pretty significant...
  20. Jesus Christ... yeah, we really need some real baseball news to talk about. That is all.
  21. I'm sure that was the big domino whose fall the rest of the baseball world was waiting for. Not too bad for a guy who had to take a minor league deal in 2017...
  22. For all of the fan chatter about the subject, I have not seen or read anything indicating that the team sees him as anything other than the third baseman of the future.
  23. If it's $6M/1 yr, the Duda can abide in Boston.
  24. Wasn't sure where else to put this, but in the wake of the Braves getting slammed with penalties for various international violations, I wonder if the Red Sox will make a run at Kevin Maitan or any of the other prospects whose contracts were voided. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/21506598/ex-atlanta-braves-gm-john-coppolella-placed-mlb-banned-list-team-loses-prospects
  25. Hanley was supposed to be able to play first (at least part-time) this year, too. I realize he's now had the surgery which will hopefully be a fix, but I'd hate to go into spring training counting on him to be the regular first baseman and then be left scrambling because he is unable to do so...
