  1. The report that said Stanton would reject a trade to St. Louis also said the same of Boston...just saying. I take all of this with a grain of salt until we know something more concrete.
  2. I feel the same way. Stanton is younger and the better player, but if one will require gutting what's left of the farm system whereas the other costs only money, I'll take the latter.
  3. Fair enough...it's been on my list, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
  4. I guess I just don't have any recollection of Papi ever expressing that he felt that way...he may have griped about his own contracts, sure, but never about adding talent from outside the system. The guy was lobbying for another big bat basically from the day Manny was traded. If we add a Stanton or Martinez this offseason, I can't see any of our young players' reactions being "Oh s***, there goes that extension I wanted...curse you, Desperate Dave!" By and large, players seem to appreciate a front office that is proactively trying to improve rather than sitting on what they already have. As Moon said, these guys know how the system is set up...and I'm willing to bet that in the cases that are now just 2-3 years from free agency (Bogaerts/Betts/Bradley), the sides have already felt out what interest there might be in an extension and what it might take to get it done, and any external acquisitions likely aren't going to be the determining factor in whether that happens or not.
  5. "The front office should consider the effect on our young high performance players of bringing in very highly paid FAs while finagling to keep their salaries low." I don't get this comment...you don't think Mookie, Xander, et. al. would appreciate the team making efforts to get better?
  6. Chavis plus any 2 or 3 from Houck, Travis, Ockimey, Beeks, Shawaryn, Scherff or Brannen. This is along the lines of what I was thinking...a few B/C grade prospects and we take 100% of the contract. I'd love to do it without giving up Chavis, but we'd probably need to. Depending on how much Henry is willing to spend over the next 2 years, I'd even consider taking on Prado's remaining $28.5 million if it would save us prospects.
  7. If he was bothered by this in Miami, Boston will put him in the loony bin.
  8. This is pretty much where I am, too. Opinions seem to vary wildly on what type of return the Marlins should be able to get, so until we know for sure what we're looking at, I'm in the "it depends" category. I do think Santana will start to look better and better if the asking prices for Stanton and Martinez remain high.
  9. "Hot stove" season and the buildup to the trade deadline are both very fun times of year to me, particularly when the Sox are expected to be active. (Which, with Dombrowski at the helm, figures to be just about always.) Of course, that comes with a lot of BS as well, but you just have to take it in stride and enjoy the craziness.
  10. Jon Morosi‏ @jonmorosi #SFGiants have interest in trading for Jackie Bradley Jr., among many outfield options they are currently considering, source says. @MLBNetwork @MLB
  11. Home runs may or may not be overrated, but we don't win in 04, 07, or 13 without the bat of David Ortiz (or Manny in 04/07), and the lack of a similar threat in our lineup was sorely felt for much of this season and left us pretty clearly a class below the Astros, Guardians, and Yankees in the AL. That doesn't mean you go out and do something stupid just to add home runs, but seeking an upgrade in the power department makes all the sense in the world, IMO.
  12. Devers and Beni are going nowhere. Can't blame them for dreaming, though...I'd probably be doing the same.
  13. I do agree with this take on Hosmer. I see him as a good, not great, player who's going to get a contract beyond what he probably should (not too different from Sandoval or Crawford in that regard, though they're obviously very different players). I'm not going to be upset if we do sign him, I just think there are better ways to use our resources.
  14. Guys, that column had a sequel...turns out he is in favor of some things. http://www.providencejournal.com/sports/20171109/what-red-sox-should-do-this-offseason
  15. 'Giancarlo Stanton trade talks between the Red Sox and the Marlins “may be heating up,” according to a report in Saturday's Miami Herald. “They're definitely in play,” said the major-league source about the Red Sox, according to the newspaper.' http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox/clubhouse_insider/2017/11/report_red_sox_stanton_talks_may_be_heating_up
  16. Another Hosmer-to-Boston prediction: https://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/article/34933/2018-free-agent-50-part-1/
  17. 'The Red Sox, Cardinals, Giants and Phillies are early contenders to put together a trade for Marlins superstar Giancarlo Stanton, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports (on Twitter). There has been “preliminary communication” regarding the right fielder between each of those teams and the Marlins, according to Morosi, who adds that talks are likely to “intensify” at next week’s general managers meetings.' https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/latest-on-giancarlo-stanton-talks-between-marlins-4-teams.html
  18. I think this is fair...you'll certainly avoid some busts this way, but will also miss out on some fine players. In Ohtani's case, it's just money (and not all that much of it in the big scheme of things, due to the changes in the system) and seems a worthwhile gamble to find out if he's really the elite talent many believe.
  19. I basically agree...not a "cliff" person myself, either.
  20. I do think we're well-positioned to win in 2018-19 (after which Sale, the various B's, and others will start hitting free agency if not extended), independent of whether or not one believes in the "cliff."
  21. I've seen it asked in other places whether, in light of the awful news about Flores, the Red Sox could petition the league for some sort of hardship exemption regarding their international bonus limit. We spent $3.1 million on a kid who sadly will never play a game for the organization, and getting a credit back for all or part of that money could allow us at least a fighting chance at Otani. Not sure if there's any precedent for that sort of move (I'm guessing not), and I feel like a s***** person for even thinking about it...but the business side of things does go on even in the face of tragedy.
  22. Did you feel the same about Darvish?
  23. MLBTR on the trade market for Stanton: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/assessing-the-trade-market-for-giancarlo-stanton.html The Red Sox are listed as one of the "best fits" (with the Cardinals and Dodgers), with pros and cons broken down.
  24. It's just a horrific story all around...I'm not sure I'd even want to know more details.
