  1. Harmony seems to be just about the only person who finds this issue so mystifying.
  2. I guess I just don't expect perfect truth and transparency out of the mouths of baseball executives. Dombrowski is probably more forthcoming than most, but he'll still say what he wants and what he needs to publicly, and no one should be shocked by that. How quickly we forget about when he didn't know of any Red Sox players having surgery in the offseason, or when he was perfectly happy with the projected lineup in early February (even though the team was well known to still be going hard after Martinez). Not really matters of life or death here...just business.
  3. I guess I didn't take as dark a view of Dombrowski's comments as some did. No, I'm sure the idea didn't come 100% from Cora, but it does make me feel a lot better about the whole thing if he was on board with it, and I see no reason for both of them to completely lie about that part. The bit about it having nothing to do with the option is obviously laughable, but I just took it as the GM equivalent of a pitcher having to insist the fastball that conveniently happened to find an opposing batter's ribs "just got away from him." There's no way he could get up there and give HanRam and his agent any additional fodder for a grievance by making it about the vesting option.
  4. I agree. The fact that Cora was apparently the driving force behind the move really sealed it for me.
  5. I always felt that we should have traded Lester and Lackey for prospects in 2014, accepted the fact that 2015 was probably going to be a lost year, and acted accordingly that offseason. Instead, the idea that we could turn things around in a single offseason and launch ourselves right back into contention got us the Hanley and Pablo contracts. The end result was that we were still terrible in 2015, and those deals would continue to limit our spending power once we were truly ready to compete (2016-present). The amount of money still being paid to two guys who ended up providing negative value over the life of their contracts is staggering.
  6. This felt like the sort of game we probably would have lost 2-1 last year...it's nice to watch an offense that can drop a few long balls on you at a moment's notice. I'm hoping for JBJ to go on one of his ridiculous hot streaks and bat .375 for the next month or so.
  7. Good time for Jackie to start heating up.
  8. Apparently, it's Cora who suggested the move: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/...ox-rumors.html ...which makes me feel even better about the whole situation, to be honest. Although Hanley had given no public indication that the vesting option was going to be an issue for him, Cora apparently felt his role was going to have to be reduced and he probably wasn't going to take it well, which is something I think we have to weigh pretty heavily in all of this. Maybe Hanley would have caught fire again at some point...maybe not. But it seems pretty clear to me that the Sox felt like they were going to have to make this call at some point and wanted to avoid any messy drama -- so why not pull the trigger now?
  9. I'd call the move from playing him almost every day (and mostly batting him third in the lineup, no less) to a sudden DFA a drastic one, yes - which is quite different from saying it's not justified.
  10. In that case, forgive my insult to the storied history and rich culture of TalkSox.
  11. I think once fans get it in their heads that a certain player is a slacker, malingerer, troublemaker, or whatever the case may be, that perception is incredibly hard to shake. I never saw any of that in Hanley during his time with the Red Sox. Say what you will about his performance, but he always seemed to have a smile on his face and to be genuinely happy to be here. I, too, wish him all the best going forward. It wouldn't particularly surprise me at all if he latched on as a 1B/DH somewhere and hit something like 15 homers with an .820 OPS the rest of the season.
  12. I'm still surprised the team jumped to this drastic of a solution so early in the season, and it wouldn't surprise me if Hanley was still capable of getting hot and going on a 2016-like run at some point, but I'm fine with the move. Definitely the best thing for the team long-term, and quite possibly in the short term as well. Hopefully Moreland can continue to produce and Swihart starts getting some more opportunities and makes the most of them. Not having to worry about the option and any related drama come August or September is a relief.
  13. Wait, so you're telling me fans on a message board made predictions that did not come to pass? Yes, that is some delicious irony right there...I guess.

  15. I just saw this...holy s***.
  16. I recall many people found A.J. Pierzynski offensive...but I don't think he's available.
  17. Not many exciting happenings in our minor league system right now...we could just make this the Vlad Jr. Thread and I'd be perfectly fine with that.

  19. Hanley has a 28 wRC+ in the month of May. I was all for letting him play if he was earning the playing time, but he's not even close to that right now. Nearly 1/3rd of the way through the season, he's close to 40% of the way to the 497 PA's he needs to trigger the option. He's not going to be released, but I'd say it's a fine time to start cutting back his playing time significantly. It's a shame some of those reps couldn't have gone to Swihart, who I anticipate will be traded or DFA'd today to make room for Pedroia...
  20. What, you mean you don't think WAR is the dumbest stat known to mankind because Player A and Player B were 0.2 bWAR apart on one random date?
  21. If I'm not mistaken, when that ESPN article first ran, Trout's lead in bWAR was slightly larger, and Mookie has since narrowed it. As of this morning, he trails Trout by 0.3 bWAR and leads him by 0.5 fWAR. Two incredible players having absolutely unreal seasons any way you slice it. I'm looking forward to watching what's shaping up to be an MVP race for the ages.
  22. I agree. A Ziegler/Reed type move seems most likely. It'll be tough to do much more than that given the sorry state of our farm system...no way we have the pieces to get someone like Realmuto.
  23. Jeez, that sucks. Coming after the loss of Flores (which I still hate even mentioning in a baseball context because it was so horrifying and tragic) and Chavis' PED suspension, and with the lack of high-end talent in general, it's dark times for the farm right now.
