  1. Landing Dozier (or Cabrera) and a solid bullpen arm would make for a pretty successful trade season in my mind.
  2. That's some ********. Someday I'll be telling my grandkids that J.D. Martinez actually hit 54 home runs that one year when the Sox won it all, not 53...
  3. When people ask for donations and I can't or don't want to contribute, I ignore them. Seems like an odd thing to have a vendetta over.
  4. Initial reaction is that I'm good with that. Eovaldi should help plug the hole at the back of our rotation, and it may be that the Red Sox just weren't impressed with what they've seen from Beeks..
  5. I think that's a little unfair to Shaw considering 2016 was his first full season in the majors. He certainly showed flashes in 2015-16 of the player he's become in Milwaukee, just never consistently. Occam's Razor would suggest he was a young player going through some growing pains (as so many do), not that he couldn't handle Boston. I think Dave has been fortunate that Moreland has worked out so well and that Devers was ready(ish) sooner than expected, or he'd be catching a lot more flack for this deal than he is. Thornburg could be lights-out for the remainder of his time in Boston and probably wouldn't come close to the value that Shaw delivered in his first year with the Brewers alone.
  6. Steckenwhatever, while less of an established name, is controlled through 2023, whereas Britton is a rental. I have my doubts we land Britton either, but the prices shouldn't be comparable.
  7. The ASG must be the peak opportunity for the media to corner players and extract pleasant and ultimately inconsequential quotes about their future contract plans. JDM: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2018/07/boston_red_sox_slugger_jd_martinez_extension.html Kimbrel: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2018/07/craig_kimbrel_on_potential_new.html Mookie: https://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2018/07/mookie_betts_on_potential_bost.html
  8. There have been stories throughout the year about other guys going to JD for hitting advice, working with him on their swings, etc. I'll try to track down some links later, maybe. Off the top of my head, I thought it's been said that Mookie talks to him almost daily about how he's doing, and that he's worked with Devers a lot as well.
  9. The Home Run Derby seems like a joke without Martinez, Betts, Judge, Trout, Stanton, Machado, Nelson Cruz, Jose Ramirez, or really anyone else from the AL you might expect to be there...not that I blame any of those guys for turning it down. I agree with those saying some kind of skills contest could be fun and a nice change of pace. (Except now I'm picturing JBJ getting hurt diving for fly balls or testing his arm.) Maybe I'm just a debbie downer when it comes to all things All-Star break. It's fun and all, but every year I mostly spend it eagerly awaiting the return of real baseball games, lol.
  10. Maybe he plays a big game on the golf course...who knows?
  11. I'd assumed previously that we'd have no shot at Harper this winter (and we probably still don't), but with the season he's having, I wonder if he'd ever go for a JD Martinez-type contract with generous opt-outs this offseason, allowing him to rebuild some value and try again in a couple of years. Just musing here.
  12. I agree. And ideally, I'd like to see Lin and hopefully Phillips get a look before we even really think about trading for a second baseman.
  13. Beeks, Chavis, Dalbec, and Mata for Koufax, DO IT NOW, DD!
  14. The O's went to the ALDS in Machado's rookie season (2012), to the ALCS in 2014, and the wild card game in 2016. Not saying any of that necessarily compares to the pressure of Boston, but it's not like he's a stranger to playing in a pennant race.
  15. I don't think anyone expects a ton out of Pearce other than to be a decent bat with some pop off the bench (particularly against LHP), which is something we'd really lacked previously. Like Nunez last year, he's made a great first impression by going on a tear at just the right time after being acquired. Obviously he won't keep this up, but I think he'll continue to be solid - which is all we really need him to be.
  16. From your lips to god's ears.
  17. And on our side, 1.5 years of Bogaerts (1.9 bWAR this year) for 0.5 years of Machado (2.4) might not be as much of an upgrade as people seem to think. If we're going to make a dramatic change to our lineup (and I'm not saying we need to or should), I'd rather go after someone like Dozier to play second, not swap out our fourth-best position player for a rental. In my mind, Machado still makes as little sense for us as he did during the offseason or a month ago.
  18. Looking at it a different way, even a fall to a pedestrian .525 winning percentage the rest of the way still puts us at 100 wins. Pretty incredible.
  19. Dalbec is starting to look really interesting...up to .260/.371/.573 (a .313 ISO!) with 21 HR and 75 RBI in 83 games. I don't know if he'll make contact enough to cut it in the big leagues, but if so, he could be a real beast. The power looks absolutely legit.
  20. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/24057648/trade-talk-hearing-manny-machado-alternative-more
  21. Alex Speier @alexspeier More bad health news for Red Sox top prospects: 3B Danny Diaz, who had 6 HRs in the DSL through July 2, had surgery to repair a broken hamate today. SS Antoni Flores, who hasn’t played since mid-June, is expected back in a few weeks. I think it might be time to admit our farm system is just cursed this year. On a lighter note, Feltman has been promoted to Greenville.
  22. They should do it just to troll everyone with the "RED SOX ACQUIRE MACHADO" headlines.
  23. It's cool to see our guys get recognized, and it does still seem to hold real weight with the players (see the clubhouse going nuts when Moreland was announced, or the residual chip JDM seems to carry on his shoulder from being snubbed in previous years), but other than that I find it difficult to care much. Would rather see Sale and the others get a few extra days of rest if it was all up to me.
  24. That's putting it charitably.
