  1. JBJ is maybe the best fielding CF'er in Red Sox history. I say "maybe" because the sample size is still too small to compare to longtime Sox greats. There's no doubt in my mind, JBJ will go down in Sox history as the best defensive CF'er ever, assuming he doesn't get hurt or traded. His bat at the major league level has always been the shady area. Anyone who knows me, knows that even a 3 month sample size proves nothing to me, but JBJ's last 3 months have been beyond our wildest expectations. If he keeps this up, he may become the greatest all around CF'er in Sox history. Note: I'm not predicting this to happen. I'm not setting expectations so high, he's bound to disappoint. I personally think he'll end up around .800 to .825 career.
  2. The people behind the UZR/150 metric specifically state that small sample sizes are not definitive. I believe they say even a season long sample size may not be enough.
  3. Yes, there were many of us who thought his bat would eventually at least get to average. There were fewer of us who felt his bat didn't even have to get to average for him to still be a big net plus to the team. I always had faith he'd become a plus hitter, and I'm glad we never traded him.
  4. Honesty appreciated. JBJ may turn out to be a very streaky hitter, so a bad stretch could be coming and may be prolonged, but I think we should all have faith that over the long haul, his numbers should be fine.
  5. Wonder where all the JBJ bashers have gone.
  6. Looks like the bats have heated up nicely. Maybe Papi should consider sticking around another year.
  7. That Bill Lee trade hurt a lot.
  8. 1) Pedro 2) The Dodger dump 3) Ortiz signing 4) Manny signing 5) VTek & Lowe
  9. The problem with trading for Trout is that you deplete the whole farm AND future budget flexibility. It's like the Kimbrel trade on steroids.
  10. I always had faith that JBJ would at least become an average offensive CF'er. I expected him to eventually be better than average, and I hope that this year is the year to show plus offense. With his defense, that makes him a huge plus. The fact that other GMs were asking for him shows just how most GMs look beyond recent BA when placing value on players. Some posters should take note.
  11. Not even sending Fisk a contract until a day too late was unforgivable. They could have at least traded him. They pretty much dumped everyone but Rice and Evans.
  12. I've been saying for years that we should get our young players some reps at new positions that are more likely not blocked, but I have to wonder if Swihart's trade value as a catcher is greater than his value to us in LF.
  13. My 16: 1.Sale of Babe Ruth 2. Tris Speaker for Sam Jones 3. Crawford signing 4. Curt Schilling and B Anderson for Mike Boddiker 5. Bagwell for Anderson 6. Lyle for Cater 7. Lynn & Renko for Tanana and Rudi 8. Bill Lee for Stan Papi 9. Cecil Cooper for G Scott & B Carbo 10. Pablo signing 11. G Scott, Lonborg & Others for Tommy Harper & others 12. Jamie Moyer for Darren Bragg 13. Dave Henderson for Randy Kutcher 14. Freddie Sanchez for Jeff Supan 15. Dice-K signing 16. Renteria signing (I think we ended up paying about $40M for that one year.) Others... Offerman? Matt Young? Steve Avery? The Brad Penny/John Smoltz tandem signing for the 2009 season? Lugo had a decent first year, but injuries turned his fielding from adequate to awful. The Manny trade brought us Jason Bay, who played well for us. We still have Brentz and Workman as comp picks for losing JBay, but that's not really much.
  14. Yeah, they'd insist on a Benintendi or Moncada addition. How about adding Kelly to my original offer. I'd hate to add JBJ, but I think that's who Cleveland wanted last winter.
  15. I'd offer Swihart, Holt, Devers and two from Johnson, Owens, Kopech and TBall for Kluber.
  16. Brentz and Coyle are DFA candidates.
  17. I'd fast track Benintendi & Moncada. Take our time with Espinosa and Devers.
  18. What a shame how we dismantled that great group of players.
  19. Hard to forget: we traded Fred Lynn for Rudi and Tanana.
  20. We let up 7 hits and 8 walks in 4 and a third innings to start the game, but allowed only 3 runs!
  21. Maybe by June or July, we may see Moncada and Benintendi in Portland. I'd also like to see Chavis get to Salem and maybe Portland by year's end. Maybe Ockimey and Basabe to Salem at some point this year. Dubon to Portland. Stanki up to Pawtucket?
  22. Before the season started, many were pointing out all this team's weaknesses then projecting doom. I tried to show that the vast majority of teams, especially in the AL had way more weaknesses or "question marks" than we did. I thought our offense was pretty balanced, and so far the numbers are showing this to be the case. Thde whole "we can't handle 2 or more blackholes" is not materializing (so far). Players on the top 10 OPS teams with a .705+ OPS and 85+ PAs: 8 Pirates (all above .769) 8 Red Sox (.786 team OPS) 7 Mets 7 D'backs 6 Cards 6 Giants 6 Marlins 4 Cubs 3 Orioles
  23. Tonight's line-up is the one I have suggested as the top 4: Betts-Bogey-Papi-Pedey (then HanRam 5th)...
  24. I'm gonna try to get to Maine before the 4th, but it may be just afterwards. I can't stay long. I'll be gone by the 15th. On Shaw. This kid was my sleeper pick a few years back. I had high hopes for him. His minor league record was not impressive, so I rarely get my hopes up on guys with his AA and AAA numbers. I'm also not a big yahoo for small sample sizes, but I admit his sample size is getting big enough to start believing it could be legit.
  25. On the BDC site, I campaigned for signing Headley over Pablo, but then again, I also said getting Valbuena would be better as well.
