  1. Agreed, thye only time options comes into the equation is if you have to trade or cut someone by keeping another good guy on the 25 man roster. Pom & Buch will help the pen. They're not going to AAA or another team, so this way we maximize our talent. (Actually, Buch may end up elsewhere.)
  2. Q has one extra year, I believe, over Sale. In a perfect world, I'd have found a cheaper way to get a closer- either financially or without top prospects. So, nix the Kimbrel, Pom and Hill trades. Yes, I'd have paid more for Q over Sale, but from what I hear their demands for Q looked like less than for Sale. I'd have given Moncada, Espi or Kopech, Basabe & Diaz for Q. Maybe we could have traded Moncada, Espi, Kopech, Margot, Guerra, Basabe, Asuaje. Allen & Diaz for Sale & Q. (Basically trading Kimbrel & Pom for Q, but having more money to spend on maybe EE.)
  3. I meant Sam Travis. You can't have it both ways. You can't say it's okay trading away blue chip prospects, because they may not have made a big splash anyways and now say it's okay because we have black chip prospects that could/should help us going forward.
  4. This past years draft also looked very good to me. It did to me too, but two things: 1) We drafted 12th (Groome), 51st (Chatham), 88th (Anderson) and 118th (Dalbec). It probably won't be easy to have similar drafts going forward with picks like 25, 65, 100 and 130. 2) If we value Groome, Chatham and Dalbec so highly, then Espi should have been off-the-charts in value. It's like I was hearing all along, "It's not so bad, because hardly any of the guys we traded were going to make it big anyways." And, now I'm hearing, "It's not so bad, because we have recently drafted some good kids that will help us later on."
  5. I think the Seth Smith rumors were from before the Moreland signing.
  6. It will be something to look back on, if EE ends up signing for $15.5M x 2. Having EE over Moreland for $10M more would have been sick. I still think he'll get close to $60M/3.
  7. Looking at the most recent 3 year sample size, here's how team rank in top SP'ers by... WAR BOS 4 Price 5 Sale 23 Porcello Cubs 6 Arrieta 7 Lester 29 Lackey CLE 2 Kluber 19 Carrasco 36 Salazar WSH 3 Scherzer 14 Strasburg 24 G Gonzalez SFG 9 Cueto 10 Bumgarner 27 Samardzja HOU 12 Keuchel 22 McHugh LAD 1 Kershaw
  8. Not alone, of course not.It was the starting point of nearly emptying the farm. Before the Kimbrel trade was also before the Espi, Hill, Moncada and Shaw trades,
  9. It's not happening. If there was any hope, we'd have waited on Moreland.
  10. I heard the Guardians said they weren't interested.
  11. Of course, but I can't imagine any team being better set up for a 10 year stretch of competitiveness than we were before the Kimbrel trade and assuming we still signed Price. Nothing is certain in MLB, even making the playoffs next year.
  12. The Red Sox organization obviously feels they need to capitalize on their window of opportunity. Clear as day, and I'm more than fine with their evaluation of the situation. Making the playoffs 9 or 10 out of the next 10 seasons is very nice, but just show me the ring, baby! I like that better. I suffered through enough of the bridesmaid decades.
  13. Realistically, I think before the trades, we were set up to do just that- have a very good chance to make the playoffs for the next 10 years. We had ML ready prospects, mid level prospects and far away prospects plus a core of young studs and 2 vet aces- one for 4 years and one for 7 years.
  14. Good, then go for Smyly, because there's no way I give up Pom for O'Neill, and I'm all for rebuilding the farm.
  15. His trade value if lower, but why would we want to trade him when his stock is low? I trust the Sox medical team checked out Pom's injury condition, when they decided not to nix the deal. The post-trade low performance was likely injury related, so to me those two are the same side of the coin. They traded for 2.5 years of Pom and have 2 years left. That's 20%, but it's also 1 out of 3 playoff cycles or 33%. I can see diminished value on that point, but not from Espi to O'Neill. Remember, I probably value Espi more than just about anyone else on this site, so there's that when weighing my opinion.
  16. Kind of avoided taking about the long term effects.
  17. Agreed. To me, my disgust over the Espi trade was never about Pomeranz. I like him and think he'll bounce back nicely.
  18. Another way to look at it (in hind sight) would be to take back the Pom trade and we'd still have Espi or Kopech (if the CWS took Espi instead or Kopech).
  19. I was thinking he was on his last year at $7.5M, but I was wrong. Nix my idea.
  20. You mean ERod not Kelly, I bet.
  21. I just posted this on another thread.... MLBTR Chat... Todd Frazier? 3:11 Where does he land? Jeffrey Todd 3:12 I feel like they ought to be plenty motivated to deal him... Giants could still make sense, or maybe even the Red Sox if they clear Buchholz salary? Maybe a 3 team deal? We send Buch and Abad to a contender. We send Owens and Elias to the CWS. The contender sends a prospect to the CWS. We get Frazier and free up luxury tax space.

  23. I hope they overpay for him.
  24. soxprospects.com has an interesting page on future rosters (assuming no additions). http://soxprospects.com/future.htm The have a disclaimer that says these are not roster projections, but they do offer a framework on where our weak spots may be. 2020: SP: Price, ERod, Groome, Wright, Owens, TBall RP: Smith, Barnes, Johnson, Workman, Martin, Shepherd, Cosart, Ysla C: Vaz-Swi 1B: Travis-Longhi 2B: Pedey 3B: Devers SS: Chatham-Hernandez LF: Beni-Castillo CF: JBJ RF: Betts DH: Dalbec 2021: Wright is gone (move TBall & Owens up) Smith is gone and TBall is remarkably the 5th starter & closer Longhi is in LF as Beni slide to CF to take JBJ's place. Castillo replaces Betts in RF
