  1. Hoping an internal starting pitcher steps it up appears not to be realistic as well. We needs some "hopes" (or miracles) to come from our farm or from guys like Johnson or Wright to not see a drop off when we start losing guys like Kimbrel and/or JBJ or Bogey. Unless something happens and soon, the writing is on the wall for our extended future. JH can choose to be taxed to hell and back, so we can extend the window a year or two, but even then, we may need at least one miracle (Travis? Groome? Johnson? C Smith? ....)
  2. I just read your post after posting my similar one. I think it may com down to choosing to keep Kimbrel or trade JBJ for a low contract. We may even lose both, especially if HRam vests.
  3. I've done multiple posts factoring in the arb costs.
  4. Arb raises are going to use up all the dea money we lose, and then some. We'll have to tade someone to keep others, and thus create new holes somehow. I'm pretty much convinced, we'll have to go over the $40M mark or lose Kimbrel and/or maybe trade JBJ (for something cheap in $$$).
  5. I said it's not reasonable to expect enough of the "hopes" to come true. What's not "real" about that?
  6. Game 2: 74 strikes 35 balls Nice job staff.
  7. He musta been great in the 6th!
  8. The salary relief list was who I feel should or will not come back. If we offer Pom a QO , and he takes it, we'll be in budget trouble.
  9. Our starting pitchers are on a record setting pace- 0.00 ERA!
  10. Damn the sample size argument! A zero winning percentage is totally unacceptable!
  11. Upcoming salary relief: $22M HRam after 2018 or 2019 $3.8M Kelly after 2018 $19M Pablo after 2019 $21M Porcello after 2019 $6.5M Moreland after 2019 $??? Holt after 2019 (at $2.2M now) $??? Thornburg after 2019 ($2.1M now) Going to be hard to replace at current costs: $13M Kimbrel after 2018 $8.5M Pom after 2018 $13M C Sale after 2019 $??? Bogey after 2019 $4M Nunez after 2019 Betts & JBJ after 2020.
  12. I totally agree. I've always been a huge Sale fan and was extremely happy when we got him. It might be hard to have a player budget with over $62M/yr spent on just two starters. I hope we find a way, but it probably would mean good bye to Kimbrel and Bogey or Pom and JBJ. Losing HRam and Pablo's contracts help but not by enough to pay all the arbs and then re-sign guys like .... Chris Freakin' Sale!
  13. Certainly the hopes and projections of the prospects DD inhertited were better than those we have now. Our best hopes are... Sam Travis seemlessly takes over for HRam at 1B next year, adn we can let Moreland go via trade or after his 2-year deal runs out. Devers becomes a major force, so we will not feel so badly about losing Bogey or JBJ. Beni becomes a major force, so we no longer have to worry about losing Bogey or JBJ. (If both Devers & Beni become great, we may even be able to stay good without Betts. ERod becomes the pitcher we all have hoped he'd become, so maybe we can get by without paying Pom to stay. Johnson or Wright step up to be fine 5th starters that are reliable. Groome fills in when we lose Porcello. Maybe Brannen or Scherff rise to the top. Mata is too far away to hope for any help from him in the next 3 years. Certainly, a few of these hopes can become reality, but we'll probably need more to come true than is reasonable to expect.
  14. The flimsy one.
  15. I was at that game! I had been visiting a buddy in North Palm Beach and stopped by to catch the opener on my way to my sister's in North Carolina. (I left before the pen meltdown and while listening on the radio, I almost drove my car into a concrete bridge after we blew it).
  16. I'm sure everyone's average career salary looks lower when you factor in the early year salaries. I'm not sure that's a good way of justifying a contract signed as a player nears or is at or past prime. I was happy with both Pedey signings. The first one was a home town discount, for sure. The second one was probably still below market value at the time. Does anyone think the Sox would have said no to Pedey's 2015 option at $11M just because he had put up a .712 OPS in 2014? I guess an argument could be made not to resign him after the 2015 season at market rates. His OPS+ numbers after those two great seasons in 2010 and 2011 (127 and 131) never really came close afterwards. 114 in 2012 115 in 2013 99 in 2014 112 in 2015 (93 games) After that contract would have run out, he's been at... 117 in 2016 101 in 2017 (105 games)
  17. I totally agree. I'm still glad we hired Coraa. I'm pretty sure our pen is going to be an overall plus this season.
  18. Had Pedey ever gone to free agency, he'd probably have made more than the Sox gave him. Sale will make a killing!
  19. Pedey was scheduled to earn $10M in 2014 and had a sure fire option for 2015 at $11M, He ended up making $25M those two years, instead of $21M, then the extension kicked in at $$85M/6.
  20. Yes. Both are worth more than $22M/7, so why not?
  21. I agree, and this whole "management will show confidence in you by starting you vs RH'd pitchers, so you will respond positively" rings hollow to me. Moreland has hit righties pretty well over the years. He's a much better fielder.
  22. Singing to the choir.
  23. Here's what cots has... Dustin Pedroia 2b 8 years/$110M (2014-21) 8 years/$110M (2014-21) signed extension with Boston 7/24/13, replacing final year and option in previous contract $1M signing bonus 14:$12.5M, 15:$12.5M, 16:$13M, 17:$15M, 18:$16M, 19:$15M, 20:$13M, 21:$12M undisclosed amount of money to be deferred limited no-trade protection first $100M contract for a second baseman
  24. So far, HRam has been no Sultan of the Swing.
  25. He's been around too long to expect significant improvement.
