  1. Yes, even the richest teams that are also highly competitive usually have quite a few low paid or arb players filling key roles. To me, that is what is going to make or break us starting in 2020 or 2021.
  2. With Leon likely to just catch one out of 5 games, and Swihart basically just our emergency catcher, I think PH'ing can be done more often. Plus, if Vaz is going to catch 4 out of 5 games, he could use an inning off here and there.
  3. I don't disagree. Especially after Kelly's game one meltdown: I'm thinking yank'em at the first sign of trouble. I'm just not one to blame a manager too quickly, even if I disagree with a decision or two. Plus, we don't have all the information he had/has.
  4. Had we pulled Kelly, and the next guy blew the game, we'd have never known leaving him in was the right choice. Second guessing seems easy at times, and for some. I do it myself pretty often, but one never really knows.
  5. SP'er ERA: 0.00 MN (21 IP) 0.36 LAD (25 IP) 0.75 BOS (24 IP) We're 21st in RP'er ERA at 5.73.
  6. Barnes pitched over 1 inning many times last year. I'd like to see him do that more often, even if it might mean less appearances.
  7. Very true, but sometimes a manager is praised for sticking with a pitcher through a tough inning who then "settles down" and pitches well afterwards. Kimbrel had not pitched much at the end of ST'ing. I trust Cora's judgement not to make him go more than an inning. If I'm going to question anything, I'd ask why not leave Barnes in for 2 innings.
  8. 2017: .819 home .720 away career at Fenway: .853 He might be a better option vs most RHPs than HRam- home or away. HRam at Fenway: .799 2017: .732 home .767 away.
  9. In hindsight, maybe 1, 2 and 4 or 1, 3 & 4 might have left us 4-0. (We might have lost game 2 or 3 had we not used CK then.)
  10. 1) He could have used someone else to start the inning. (I wouldn't have.) 2) He could have used Kimbrel game 1, 2 and 4 or 1, 3 and 4, instead of 2 & 3. Again, I have no issues with how Cora handled game 1 or 4 (or 2 & 3).
  11. Yes, I wouldn't be to quick to PH for Vaz or any other hot catcher. (Yes, I believe in hot and cold streaks.)
  12. We could PH for Leon and bring in Vaz and not lose anything on defense. We could PH for Vaz and bring in Leon- same thing. Having 3 catchers allows the best of both worlds.
  13. Had Kelly had puked again yesterday, we'd see some calling for Cora's head.
  14. That is one of the major advantages of carrying 3 catchers, especially on a team with weak hitting catchers.
  15. 8 of our 11 pitchers seeing action so far have a WHIP below 1.01: 0.50 Kimbrel 0.57 Price 0.67 Sale 0.75 Hembree 0.75 Walden 0.75 Barnes 1.00 Poyner 1.31 Porcello 3.00 Smith 4.50 Kelly
  16. Our bench has started the season 0 for 16 with 3 BBs. (I'm not counting Nunez as a sub for right now.)
  17. Fangraphs has our SP'ers ranked 8th. The Rays are ranked 11th. It shouldn't be a big surprise we didn't smash the ball around, especially in that park.\ (Their offense is ranked 22nd, so I guess our numbers reflected about what was expected. Still, a SP'er ERA of 0.75 is a nice start regardless of who we faced.)
  18. The ball just doesn't carry much for some reason. Part of the reason might also be that the Rays have had good pitching over the years, but that doesn't explain why we hit those pitchers much better in Fenway. I'm fine with low-scoring games, so I guess it doesn't bother me that much.
  19. Joe Morgan took line-up hints from his little daughter during the "Morgan Magic" streak.
  20. I saw the opening day game in Tampa back in the closer by committee season. I thought the place was pretty nice. I enjoyed the atmosphere and not sweating in the heat and humidity of FLA.
  21. 4 games in and it's time to start benching people? Wow! Sox OPS .000 Leon .125 Moreland .154 Beni .282 JBJ .375 Holt .522 Vaz .561 JMart .641 Devers .641 HRam .801 Betts .833 Swihart .833 Nunez 1.412 Bogey If it was up to me, I'd play the starters until they need a rest or prove they don't deserve to start anymore. That will take more than 4 games. As far as I'm concerned, these are the only players who deserve to start: JMart Betts Bogey Devers Beni (keep an eye on how he does vs lefties) Nunez Vaz JBJ is deserving due to his defense, but I'm okay with sitting him here and there during slumps. HRam does not deserve a FT slot- neither does Moreland. This is the only slot, next to maybe JBJ's where guys like Swihart can muscle their way to a FT role.
  22. Yeah, well we won a few by just a run. I'm happy with 3-1. I don't blame Cora for game 1. We might have lost a later game had we not had Kimbrel available due to pitching in game 1. What if can drive anyone crazy. I'm liking these numbers a lot... Price 7 IP 0 ER Sale 6 IP 0 ER Velazquez 5.2 IP 1 ER Porcello 5.1 IP 1 ER Total: 24 IP 2 ER (0.75 ERA) Yes, it was just the Rays, but it's a nice start.
  23. I'm thinking, we're 3-1 and only one guy is hitting well- Bogey. Wait till this offense errupts! It's all good!
  24. Despite the somewhat slow start on offense, I think we'll be just fine, barring major or multiple injuries. My guess is that one or two from Betts, Devers, Beni and Bogey will have a huge year. Id JMart can stay healthy and put up 2017 numbers over more PAs, we should score a lot more runs this year.
