    I think Beni is about to bust out. He gets on base a lot, so Betts should get more rbi chances. I trust the studies that show best hitter up 2nd in the way to go. I'm more concerned about batting JD 4th not 3rd. I'd bat Bogey 3rd vs RHPs and Pearce 3rd vs LHPs.

    I'm glad we get the west coast road trip done early. I think we'll go 8-3 or 7-4.

    Good to see the team rounding into shape as ST'ing nears its end. Our rotation is looking strong. Even Johnson looked good today. Our pen is still shaky, but we'll have some budget space to fix it, if needed.

    True, but I was working on the assumption we reset in 2020 and teams like the Yanks and Dodgers are a few year away from the same position we will be in next winter. (The Astros have already begun to lose key players, and they were thought to be set for years, in terms of having stocked up young players and plenty of budget space.) Surely, anything can happen.

    I'm not sure if and when we reset. My point on that post was based on the condition we reset after 2019. Of course, if we don't reset, then we can and should remain highly competitive for a while.

    I'm assuming a reset, so there's only so much Henry and DD can do, under that circumstance. I think you are underestimating how important Bogey & Porcello are to our chances of winning. Moreland, Pearce, Holt & Nunez cannot be easily replaced with just about no spending money. Maybe Chavis & Dalbec can do well, but one from Chatham or Lin will be replacing Bogey, so expecting something useful from those two replacing 3 infielders is a big stretch. We've also already lost Kimbrel & Kelly. Would we have won last year without Porcello, Bogey, Kimbrel, Kelly, Moreland, Pearce, Holt, Nunez, Leon, Pom & Thornburg? I think we'd have a slight chance that year, which is better than the cliff I had been projecting. Remember, other teams will be getting better, while we lose key players.

    Extending Betts & JD and letting Porcello, Porcello, Moreland, Pearce, Nunez, Holt & Thornburg go and resetting would mean we have just about no money for all the other roster spots. 2020 Roster C- Vaz (if we can afford him or trade him) & Swihart 1B- Chavis 2B- Pedey 3B- Devers & Dalebec SS- Chatham & Lin LF- Beni & GHernandez CF- JBJ (may lose him for 2021) RF- Betts DK- Martinez SP1 Sale SP2 Price SP3 Eovaldi SP4 ERod SP5 Johnson/DHernandez/Velazquez RP1 Barnes RP2 Brasier RP3 Hembree RP4 Workman RP5 Lakins RP6 Feltman RP7 Poyner/Wright/Walden/Shawaryn It's not a bad team. It is not a "cliff", but it is not a highly competitive team without Bogey, Porcello and all the role players like Moreland, Pearce, Holt and Nunez.

    Good point, but you have to keep fans coming to games and watching on TV. Plus, we may have a slight chance of competing, if some farm guys surprise.

    I did the math. We can reset and keep JD, if we let Bogey & Porcello go. We won't have much for filling other needs and will rely on DHernandez, Chatham, Chavis/Dalbec and minor free agents for one year as we reset. The, IMO, it will be back to big spending and high competitiveness within 1-2 years (hopefully).

    What if it comes down to (after this season) a 5 year extension for JD ($120M/5) vs a 6 year deal for Bogey($150M/6)? You can only chose 1.

    He might still get close to the MLB playing time he got last year by choosing this route.

    Maybe a bit bold but certainly attainable. Heck, he could hit 45 120.

    Assuming we lose Bogey & Porcello and are able to keep Betts, the questions then fall to JD, who might eat up a big chunk of the remaining spending budget vs JBJ. If we keep both, there might be just pennies left to fill any holes our farm can't fill.

    The opt out with $55M/2 left may hurt, but I'm loving 3 years more of Sale.

    9:01pm: Sale has passed his physical, Rosenthal tweets, so all that remains is for the contract to be announced. Sale will earn $30MM in each of the first three seasons of the deal, after which time he has the right to opt out of the remaining two seasons. Those campaigns are valued at $27.5MM, meaning Sale will be deciding on two years and $55MM versus a trip onto the open market.

    Maybe Beni gets $5M and Betts gets $27M and my final number was about right.

    We may suffer in 2020 with DHernandez/Johnson/Velazquez as out 5th starter, but if we reset in 2020, we may be able to spend on a decent starter for 2021.

    D Hernandez may come through, but until it happens, I don't blame anyone for thinking the trend will continue.

    Okay, $157M for 13 players +$15M for player benefits= $172M. If you add 12 players at min wage, it's about $180M. The other 15 on the 40 man roster brings it to about $183M... That leaves a few million to upgrade those min wage players, and once we reset, we may go back to $40M over, which would play for some major upgrades. I still think we'll have a down year, when we reset, but it may not have to be more than 1-2 years.

    I read somewhere that the timing no longer matters, as long as it does not replace the existing contract.

    Did those extensions wipe out their 2019 salary? Trout's replaced the last 2 years of his contract. I think Sale's was strictly 2020 to 2024. (I'm not sure, if I am right.)
