  1. Maybe $15M! (Joking, of course)
  2. I hope they swoop on Harper or Machado, and his contract cripples them for years and years. Plus, it will make beating them all the more sweeter!
  3. Vineland, NJ is about the same distance as Baltimore, who passed on him before the Yanks did.
  4. Certainly, I had that more in mind than his first 5 years. Cano had a lot of value in his first 5 years, but I still think he fell short of expectations and never did enough to lead the team to the playoffs.
  5. Good points. That catch in Houston was worth $10M alone!
  6. My head is spinning, but I actually understood this!
  7. Are the CWS serious contenders? Are the Yanks laying low- only to spring to life and snatch one of these up at the last minute?
  8. They probably still would have blown it.
  9. I'm not talking about current FA value, I'm asking if price's 2018 playoff heroics added to the total value that fangraphs does not count (in your mind). Surely, it was worth something. (Note: one could argue his other playoff performances subtracted from that total value.)
  10. I get it. I think using these numbers to show a signing has worked or not is a bit out of hand. Cano has not done poorly, but he fell short of expectations, and the M's never made the playoffs in those 5 years. He has 5 left at ages 36-40. I'm thinking the signing will be viewed as bad, and the caught cheating aspect breaks any tie-breaker. Price has not lived up to the hype either, but at least he had a direct role in us winning a ring and making the playoffs all 3 years he was here. He has 4 years left and is younger than Cano. My guess is his ending won't be as bad as Cano's. It's just a guess.
  11. Uh oh! notin, take notice!
  12. Yes, I mentioned the lefty thing. You are right about not expecting to gt a top prospect without some salary relief, but maybe we could get a decent RP'er and save enough money to sing Kikuchi and still spend less than Porcello alone. Again, I am not for this type of dealing. I just mentioned it as a possibility, if we are looking to cut salary and stay competitive. (I'm also not sure how highly DD & Co value Kikuchi.
  13. It's hard to imagine any of these guys are worth the money they say they are. I've never agreed with that part of fangraphs, but it is what it is.
  14. I'm not for trading Porcello, but if we are really serious about cutting the budget, what about trading Porcello for a top prospect and cheap RP'er under team control for 2+ years, and then sign Kikuchi for $7-8M a year x 4-5 years? I realize we don't really want to add a lefty and take away a righty, but in terms of money, we'd save over $11M in 2019, add to our farm, fix the pen to some extent and see how Kikuchi compares to Porcello next year (and beyond). Again, I'm not for trading Porcello. He has been the rock of our rotation for several years.
  15. I never said Price met expectations, especially for the regular seasons. Yes, Price dropped off more than Cano, and I've said they are close to even and can be classified as "decent so far" or "not too good so far". I'm a big fan of fangraphs, but their money value numbers seem inflated. If you think Cano has been worth his contract, fine. Call him "good," and I won't complain. Do you think Price deserves some added value for his 2018 playoff performances?
  16. Good points, but the projections of our taxes looks to be much higher going forward. The rates go up sharply the more consecutive years you go over.
  17. Seattle was not expecting to get the production of Cano's first few years with NY. They were expecting numbers like his last 5 years (OPS+ 138) or his last 2 years in NY of 148 and 147. Yes, price has been injured, but he's not a cheater. His 2018 playoff heroics are probably bring him much closer to the Cano's 5 years combined. My guess is Price's WAR per year for his remaining 4 years outpaces Cano's final 5 years average WAR per year.
  18. True, but the fact that Seattle had some pretty good teams, on paper, and never made the playoffs with Cano, while Price helped us reach the playoffs all 3 years, should count for something.
  19. Not to mention a player's role in getting a team or preventing a team from even reaching the playoffs.
  20. I'm not complaining. I'm not arguing we should have risked anything. I'm a bored Sox fan looking for something to talk about. My guess is, the Sox probably thought they'd end up under the $40M tax and miscalculated, but certainly, I could be wrong. I'm not even sure we'd have found a taker for Pom, or how much money the other teams already paid for Eovaldi and Pearce. I do think it would have been nice to have found a way, in hindsight argument only, to have saved $850K and got a better draft slot and more money to spend on draftees. Shoot me for wondering out loud!
  21. I said Price's was decent, because he directly played a significant role in a ring. I'm not sure using fangraph's value numbers is the best measure. I'm okay with saying Cano has been decent, like price. The Not good so far label was partially based on Cano not leading the M's to the playoffs even once, let alone a ring. I'm sorry, but I think Cano fell short of expectations in Seattle. He had an OPS+ of 138 in his last 5 years with NYY. It was 129 with Seattle. Plus, he got caught cheating, so that doesn't help his or your case much. We can call it "decent, so far," and we can call Price "Decent or not so good, so far," if you like depending on what criteria you want to use. They are both pretty close, but Cano got a 10 year deal and has 5 more to go at ages 36-40. Price signed a 7 year deal and has 4 years left at ages 33-36. I'm pretty sure who ends up with a better final score... PRICE!
  22. Hard to know, since budgets were not public knowledge for many years. I bet it's less than 20% of the time.
  23. We probably still win without Kinsler, but I was thinking more about us possibly traded Pom and eaten all but $1.4M of his contract, or some other way to dump a bit of salary. Maybe throw in another prospect and have the opposing teams pay $851K more of pearce's or Eovaldi's contracts. I have to think moving up 10 slots is worth $851K.
  24. It looks pretty close to half being good and half being bad.
  25. Plus, when Kimbrel signs elsewhere, we don't get the normal slot comp pick.
