  1. Here's the true comp: Age Level OPS K/PA Middy 19 A- .666 73/226 20 A .753 123/427 21 A+ .770 121/481 22 AA/AAA .834 114/472 23 MLB .835 70/286 24 MLB .696 98/374 Devers 18 A .773 84/508 19 A+ .779 94/546 20 AA/AAA .955 63/358 20 MLB .819 57/240 21 MLB .731 121/490 Comparing Devers's ML numbers at the ages Middy was in single A is a bit far-fetched.
  2. Yes, but it's much better than before, and they may not go over by too much next season.
  3. If our catchers hit their career norms, we'll see a 100 point gain from 2018.
  4. They tested me last week, but they're still waiting for my twitch to occur.
  5. So, would you rather have Middy or Devers? Look at minor league numbers and K rates. Look at ages.
  6. As long as 2 starters aren't out at the same time, we should be okay. I like our depth as it is in the rotation. Our pen depth will look okay, if we can add one solid arm. Sale Price Eovaldi Porcello ERod Wright (starts the season on DL?) Johnson Velazquez Sawaryn ______ Brasier Barnes Hembree Thornburg Workman Poyner (Wright/Johnson/Velazquez) Lakins Walden Brewer J Taylor Shawaryn Shepherd E Ramkirez J Weber Z Putman D Hernandez Feltman .
  7. Looks like Fiers might go to the A's for about $15M/2. These FAs are expensive!
  8. They picked him almost solely on the basis of the "twitch test" they and only they gave him. I doubt they were sure he'd be anything close to what he has become, but I think they also knew nobody else would take him. They probably could have drafted him in the 10th round, but they drafted him in the 5th "to be sure." Of course, I am just speculating, and we'll probably never know when they might have chosen him, if others had scouted him, and they felt a threat he might be taken early. I realize I could be very wrong, and they simply valued him as the best 5th round pick when the pick came to therm.
  9. I'm with you all the way. I am certain we end up getting a significant pen arm before opening day. My guess is we try to get one via trade (maybe Swihart & Chavis/Dalbec), so we can stayt under the $40M mark and have a little bit of space for a mid summer pick-up.
  10. I remember being lambasted for suggesting we trade Middy and a prospect for Trevor Bauer.
  11. I'm not saying we knew Betts was going to be a superstar, but I'm pretty sure teams draft players they like less than later picks, because they know the better player will not be drafted by their next pick. It's probably not a common event.
  12. Maybe they knew Betts would still be there in the 5th round, since nobody else scouted him.
  13. I get what you are saying, but you also said this... So far this off season , the competition is improving while the Sox are having some difficulty just staying the same. The Guardians lost Brantley and others, and are looking to dump a top starter. The Astros added Brantley but lost Morton and will likely lose Keuchel and Gonzalez. The Yankees added Paxton, but look to lose Lynn, Britton & Robertson, not to mention weakening their farm depth. There are still some signings and acquisitions to go, so let's wait and see, before we claim others are getting better. Right now, all top AL contenders are worse, on paper, than last year.
  14. Yes, indeed, but I understand the sentiment about not wanting to stand still or get worse while others get better. I prefer tolook at how our team looked last winter vs this winter- same with the Yanks, Stros and Guardians.
  15. While true, I don't think other teams used the "twitch test" on him and found out he was off-the-charts great. We do deserve some credit for that.
  16. I think they re-set, so they could gom over this year- same as the Yanks.
  17. It should be an improvement, but not really for the 2019 playoff team vs the 2018 playoff team. Maybe that's what he was getting at.
  18. Yes, Paxton is a big plus over Lynn, but I was responding to tghe post about other teams getting better, so far, and us getting worse. Paxton is not greater than Britton, Robertson and Lynn combined. As of now, all big AL teams look worse on paper.
  19. I would not. WE have too many better players to re-sign in the next 2-3 years. What DD does is anyone's guess.
  20. The Yanks will have Didi on the bench injured to start the year and have yet to replace Britton, Robertson & Lynn. (I may be missing others.) The Astros lost Morton and will likely lose Keuchel and Gonzalez. They signed an injury plagues Brantley, so far. The Guardians are looking to dump stars.
  21. We are much better than the team that started the season, but if you look at the 2019 opening day team vs the 2018 playoff team, we are... Minus: Kimbrel, Kelly, Pom and Kinsler Plus: Maybe Pedey, hopefully Thornburg, Wright and whatever RP'er we pick up along the way. We can also hope DD works his mid season magic like he did with Eovaldi & Pearce this year. Look at the Yankee and Astros scorecard. They have yet to replace what they lost.
  22. I'm serious. I wouldn't take him for $10M a year. (And, I've been accused of not understanding the non data part of the game.)
  23. Charlie Morton to Rays for $30M/2 with 3rd year option triggered by days missed over 2 seasons.
  24. I put Poyner in parenthesis, because the really talked mostly about the other 3 and just mentioned Poyner on the side.
  25. You're already in apologist mode. He's dirty. He doesn't hustle. He brags about not hustling. That's my definition of a cancer. I hope you guys get him not Harper.
