  1. The only spots left to "earn" are... Back up catcher- Leon or Swihart Last pen slot- likely goes to out-of-options pitchers like Workman, Johnson, Hembree & Thornburg. If Brasier begins on the DL, then there's a fight for another pen slot (Thornburg/Poyner/Velazquez/Walden/ ???).
  2. Right now, Devers being forced into the 3b slot is clearly a stall tactic due to personnel. That kid is so thick in the legs and slow on the first step that he will never be defensively average at 3b. Devers has been improving his defense, so nothing is being "forced." IMO, his biggest strength is his first step and quick reflexes. I totally disagree with you on that area. To me, his weakness is in his range, which for 3B is not much of an issue, except when running down pop-ups and foul balls. Fenway's small foul territory, especially down the 3B line in short RF may help hide that drawback. Note: I've been a big worrier about his defense and have suggested a move to 1B might be best (like when I advocated us signing Moose), but I saw some major improvement on defense, particularly down the stretch. His UZR/150 went from -11.5 to -5.2. If he can get near zero, he will likely stay at 3B, and Chavis may play 1B next year.
  3. I have serious doubts about Pedey, especially on defense. The way he plays all out, I'm not sure he can dial it back. He will likely try to dive for a ball and tweak his knee again. 90 games would be great, assuming he can hit near .790.
  4. You won't be using them the way you hope to use them.
  5. Aren't those the two times?
  6. I'm not so sure Chavis is a better defender at 3B than Devers, but we should know by the end of 2019.
  7. I never fret over ST'ing, except the injuries. (Knock on wood.)
  8. I think waiting, despite all the risks, is the best way to go. I like our roster now, and it already seems like we'll have to trade, cut or demote someone I like.
  9. Nobody said the Sox had the best roster in MLB last spring. Cora pulled the team together- vets and kids and all in between. Our pen was supposed to suck. Many wanted JBJ traded. Look how many players improved on 2017. Not all are due to Cora, but I think he played a major role in our team's success. I also had very little issues with in game decisions... much less than with past managers. He's the best Sox manager I have ever seen. (BTW, I said that last summer, before the ring.)
  10. Betts hitting second has been decided and is what is best. I brought up JD, because I'm not sure it is decided, and batting him 3rd has been mentioned and supported here. Just trying to keep the conversation going.
  11. Top Sox OPS in ST'ing (15+ AB) 1.429 JBJ (14 AB) 1.319 Brentz (16) 1.286 Devers (21) 1.205 Chavis (21) 1.090 Lin (24) .888 Leon (15) .881 de la Guerra (20) .857 Bogaerts (16) .824 Chatham (19) WHIP (6+ IP) 0.86 Walden 1.00 Poyner 1.14 DHernandez 1.29 ERamirez 1.38 ERod 1.43 JTaylor
  12. Maybe they trade or cut Leon, Thornburg and Wright and free up enough money to sign a last minute cheap free agent RP'er, while still leaving a buffer for a summer deal(s).
  13. That $1.5M is significant, if we are really looking to stay under the max line this season. I won't be crushed, if Leon is the odd man out, but my guess is Sale & maybe Price might let out a big sigh if it happens.
  14. From what I heard, the Sox thought the Beltran deal was a done deal. He certainly would have supplanted Swihart in LF. I brought it up to point out that Sox management had no road map to get Swihart as a FT starter. He was a good choice to take over in an emergency-type situation, but IMO, there was no plan to make Swihart a FT starter. I'm not even sure the catching job was 100% his to start 2016. I think they may have felt Vaz needed another week to get ready, and the plan was always for Vaz to be the number 1 catcher. BTW, I'm not a Swihart hater. I'm more of a Leon booster.
  15. I love Betts up 2nd. I hope JD hits 4th- not 3rd. Cora is the best Sox manager I have ever seen. To imply we won despite him is (IMO) just plain wrong.
  16. I know he may be the one. I think Sale & Price are with me on this one.
  17. Who are the real stars we keep? How do we do that and stay under even the $20M line? It's going to be very difficult to do all these things: 1) Keep all the best stars. 2) Get under the luxury tax line for just one year. 3) Rebuild the farm. 4) Stay HIGHLY competitive throughout. I'm hoping we can have just one "down year". Maybe, we can even have a winning record that year or push for the wild card with the core players we keep, but I still think it will be a miracle to pull off all 4 on the list. Even 3 out of 4 might be real tough.
  18. I'm not claiming I know what DD and Cora will choose. I'm just giving my opinion on who I would choose.
  19. No, in 2016 he was our starting catcher. He lasted 6 games as our staff was getting shelled. He was demoted. Some map.
  20. Why don't we know the 2 catchers yet? Should I look to Facebook or Istagram or what for the answer.
  21. Maybe because Barnes pitched great at the end, also, they think both are capable enough.
  22. Johnson & Velazquez have struggled in ST'ing, so far, but there's a ways to go, and Johnson is out of options. I can't see DHernandez making it early in the season, unless a couple pitchers get hurt, and even then, he may not get the call.
  23. I think Holt & Nunez are enough, if Pedey goes down, but last year, we got Kinsler, so maybe not. How healthy Nunez is is important. I think, if a starter goes down, we call Velazquez up, but D Hernandez is an option. (I think Johnson is our 6th starter, who will start in the pen.)
  24. They were actively looking for a LF'er while Swihart was playing LF. Believe what you wish, but there was never a road map, IMO. BTW, he wasn't hurt last year and Leon was hitting something like .102 after July 27th. If there was a road map, why didn't he play more last year? The only time he played consistently was when Vaz was hurt. BTW, how long did he last as our starting catcher to open 2016? (Hint: more than 5 and lass than 7 games.) There was no injury on that map.
