    Old school also used bunting and hit & runs (often from the #2 hitter) much more than today. It seems like common sense to want your two best OBP (or at least 2 of the top 3 or 4 on your team) guys up 1 & 2. One could ask, what took so long to figure this out? It's not really a sabermetric determination.

    He sure has. He looks like a different defender out there. His foot work looks perfect, now. He quickly gets into throwing posture, and it has shown in his more accurate throws. I'm impressed, and I was a leader in the "Maybe Devers will be better at 1B someday camp."

    Chavis in his last few games (in reverse order - most recent going backwards): 0-4 (3Ks) 1-5 (3) 0-4 (2) 2-4 (0) 0-3 (3) 0-3 (2) 0-5 (2) That's 3 for 28 (.107). That's 15 Ks out of his last 25 outs made. Tiny sample size, I know. He deserves more time before a demotion is considered, but looking ahead to Moreland and Pearce's return, I think the choice is up for discussion.

    Pearce was actually starting to heat up before the injury. I agree, his trade value, even if we pay a big chunk of his remaining contract, is minimal. Chavis has options remaining, he's slumping, and he could use some time to make adjustments away from the big stage, but he also has a chance to heat up before Pearce returns and change the narrative. I'm far from giving up on Chavis, but I'm not ready to give up on Pearce, either. A month ago, I was ready to give up on Nunez, so things can obviously change pretty quickly. The idea is to keep as many good options available as possible. Chavis will have every opportunity to return and contribute later or get hot now and stay- perhaps forcing a trade of Pearce, Nunez or Holt.

    Exactly. Creating runs is not just about RBI's. It's about runs scored and increasing the odds of runs being scored by doing something. There will always be exceptions to any rule, especially when we are talking about very marginal differentials between just about all batting slots near each other in the line-up. It's also about how many more (or less) runs might have occurred with the alternate choice to JD in the 3rd or 4th slot and vice versa. Maybe JD created 22 more runs in the 3rd slot than the 4th, but when he batted 4th, the guy up 3rd created 23 more.

    The budget has caught up to Theo as it has with DD. We'll see how this deal shakes out.

    JBJ got on base 2 out of 4 times, today. He was 0-2. He walked once and was HBP. His OPS went from .606 to.607. I'm hopeful, he can keep this up all year.

    Yes, big sweep. I don't want to here how weak our opponent was. We swept'em. I don't want to here how bad our 5th starter and pen are. We swept'em with them both. We got out hit. We still won. We are keeping our walks down (11 Ks and 1 BB for KC, today.) We are bunching hits and putting up crooked up numbers left and right. Keep it going!!!

    So, this means you DFA or trade Pearce?

    For argument's sake,let's say the top 2 guys have a .333 OBP, and C represents a BB or hit. Here are the 9 combinations for the 3 hitter coming up (assuming no DP): AA (2 outs none on) AB (2 outs none on) AC (1 out- one on) BA (2 outs none on) BB (2 outs none on) BC (1 out- one one) CA (1 out- one on) CB (one out-one on) CC (no outs- 2 on) 4 out of 9 times, the #3 guy comes up with none on in the first inning. It gets more complicated for the #4 hitter in the first inning, and there are times he doesn't even get up in the first and leads off the next inning. Of course, when the OBPs are better than .333, the odds go up the #3 guy gets up with men on.

    Actually, the #4 or 5 guys would, since if the top 3 guys have an OBP above .333, and our do and then some, chances are better for the #4 and 5 hitters. One big example is when the first 2 make out and the number 3 guys (with a .375 OBP) gets on base for the number 4 guy.

    OPS means much more to me than RBIs, but the whole team needed to start getting more timely hits, especially JBJ, so it was nice to see him get a big hit last night. JBJ still has a long way to go, and there are no guarantees he'll stay hot. Out of 151 players with 200+ PAs, JBJ ranks... 149th in OPS at .606. (He's .006 from Jose Ramirez at 146th.) 143rd in WAR (-0.2) 140th in OBP (.290) RBIs? Currently, Joey Votto is last with 11 (in 253 PAs)! JBJ is 147th with 17 (in 202 PAs). Many ahead of JBJ have significantly more PAs.

    Here's the problem: We need 13 pitchers, because we have a doubleheader coming up soon and have 17 games in a 16 day stretch. Assuming we don't send a pitcher down when Moreland returns, sending down Travis is the no-brainer. The issue arises when Pearce is ready to return. Who goes? Holt can refuse assignment to AAA and is one of our hottest hitters. Nunez is out of options and beginning to heat up. Maybe Peatce doesn't return before these 16 days are done, but if he does, we have a serious choice to make ob Chavis, Holt, Nunez or Pearce.

    I'd give him a little more time, before demoting him. The roster problem is tough, since we probably want to keep 13 pitchers through this 17 games in 16 day stretch, and Moreland will be back before that stretch ends.

    Gorkys went 2 for 3 tonight with 3 BBs. Marco Hernandez went 2-5 with a 2B. Castillo and Brentz with 2 hits as well. Witte with 2 hits and a tater. Stankiewicz went 6 IP, 1 ER _____________________ Duran 3 for 5 in AA (2B, but 1 CS and 1 pick-off) Dalbec 1-2 with 2 BBs Reyes 6 IP and 4 ERs ____________________ Casas 2 for 5 in A Scherff 4 IP 5 ER (8 hits)
