  1. Locking him up, now, before his arb years end may lessen the cost, somewhat. Who knows how Bloom views Devers or large and long contracts. His time in TB shouldn't count. His pre-emptive move with Betts is just one example. His budget has been restricted since he started. If the budget opens up, this winter, like I think it will, we might see a side of Bloom nobody has seen before.
  2. That may all be true, but who gets bounced from a 12 man staff? Sale, Eovaldi, ERod, Pivetta, Perez, Richards Barnes, Ottavino, Houck, Whitlock, Taylor, DHern Even a 13 man staff. Sawamura Valdez Brasier Rios Workman I know you've never been high on Valdez, but I'd take him over Andriese. Sawamura is a lock for the 13th slot, IMO.
  3. What makes you think I'm looking at just OPS or this year's OPS numbers? It's no secret I'm no fan of how Vaz has handled our staffs over the years, but here are the OPS numbers from 2020-2021: .769 Plawecki (167 PAs) .697 Vaz (510 PAs) That's 73 points. I'm not saying bench Vaz, but just to play Plawecki a little more and see what happens. I realize 1Bmen are supposed to hit and catchers catch, but Vaz has been pretty awful at the plate after 2 years of near .800 hitting. I'm not sure what's up with him, but he has gotten a free pass among a crowd of posters that seem to bash just about everything and everyone in the game threads.
  4. Sox OPS Against .498 Barnes (Kojiesque) .571 Ottavino (quietly putting up great numbers) .600 Whitlock (steal of the winter) .621 Houck (just 74 PAs against, but WOW!) .623 Rios (I was wrong about him.) .635 Valdez (back in the saddle again) .673 Taylor (been great since April) .685 Eovaldi (steady Nate) .695 DHern (still an enigma) .743 Pivetta (the difference maker) .757 Sawamura (ups and downs) .762 Workman (perhaps the odd man out) .775 ERod (on the rise, until last night?) .794 Perez (top 5th starter in baseball?) .851 Richards (to the pen when Sale returns?) .942 Andriese (Will he even get another chance?)
  5. Updated Sox OPS .939 Dever (just passed the formidable JD) .935 JD (hanging steady) .903 Bogey (wrist bothering him) (.886 Duran in 17 PAs) .792 Arroyo (on the IL again) .789 Kike (about to pass Arroyo) .765 Renfroe (needs to get hot) .759 Verdugo (showing signs of heating back up) .668 Plawecki (maybe he needs to play more) .656 Dalbec (just when you think he's getting better...) .637 Vaz (getting a free pass from posters) .583 Marwin (IL) .578 Chavis (days are numbered?) .501 Cordero (placeholder for Arroyo)
  6. Let's see what the new CBA brings, but I have to think Devers is a keeper. He brings so much life and energy to the team. He's the spark. He's also his own kind of hitter that often gets to an opposing pitcher in a groove, because he's not like a typical hitter. He can hit junk for HRs. He can hit balls 8 inches out of the K zone for HRs. He can look silly for 2-3 ABs, then BAM! DEVERS FOREVERS! LOCK HIM UP!
  7. I think it's a stupid name. In this day & age, it's worse than lame. I think "Rock" or "Rockers" would have been much better, but I'm sure there could have been an even better one.
  8. That's a nice club of 3 to belong to.
  9. I agree on Feltman. The more I read about Mayer, the more I think he'll be our #1 prospect right away. Casas is not really doing anything special. Downs has a .609 OPS and Duran in in the ML's now.
  10. Sale Eovaldi ERod Pivetta Perez Richards Barnes Ottavino Whitlock Houck Taylor DHern That's 12, right there. If we go with 13: pick one from... Sawamura (IL) Valdez Brasier (IL>rehab) Rios Andriese Workman Seabold Even if ERod goes to the IL, we look 13 deep, once Sale comes aboard. I'm always for adding a pitcher, but Bloom might just add a cheap 1Bman and call it a day.
  11. We just added Houck, and Valdez looks good. When we add Sale, I'm not sure Bloom thinks we need to trade for an arm.
  12. Red Sox History... Only Teddy Ballgame and Tony C hit 100 HRs by the same age as Devers.
  13. Anybody else wonder if what ERod went through, tonight had anything to do with COVID? There is a pretty wide variety of symptoms reported, sometimes long after apparent recovery.
  14. Not the one he just had.
  15. Jimenez is hard to value. His upside may keep Bloom from dealing him. Ward may not even need rule 5 protection, but he may still be wanted by some GM
  16. Seabold goes 3.1 innings 3 ER (6 runs) 3 H 4 BB 1 K Feltman in his AAA debut... 2 IP 3 ER 4 H 0 BB 1 K Matheny with an HR Wong 2 for 5 Portland won 7-6 by scoring 4 in the bottom of the 9th and 2 in the 10th.
  17. A bullpen that gave 3 innings from a recent AAA call-up and two from Rios.
  18. It was a long run but the ball was hit high. It looked to me like he thought it was going to be an easy play. I missed teh replay, so I could be wrong.
  19. I watched the game. I just stayed away from the game thread. Yes, good to see Verdugo's bat warming up, but what was with that lah-dee-dah dropped fly ball play? He's starting to make me doubt his character.
  20. We can afford to trade a couple guys that may not make the 40 man, next year- guys like Potts, Rosario, Chavis or someone we might be surprised by Bloom thinking we can do without. I don't see him trading anyone very promising. I think the highest he goes is maybe Groome or Ward.
  21. I wouldn't trade Casas for Freeman & Rizzo.
  22. 4:05 start time Eovaldi- the Yankee killer. The team is pulling together, nicely, with some newbies onboard and Houck & Valdez back in the saddle. The bats are showing life- Kike is leading the way. Devers is on pace for somewhere near 50 HRs and 150 RBI. All is good in Red Sox Nation.
